Economic Opportunities Of Space Enterprise In The Next Decades, Klaus P. Heiss

Space Congress® Proceedings

At this juncture of the United States Space Program a major opportunity exists to give a new impetus to space applications (and space sciences) for the next two decades. It involves a redirection of the U.S. Space Programs from an emphasis of means to one emphasizing scientific and economic application goals of space technology. This opportunity comes about with the successful deployment of the Space Shuttle System in the early 1980s. Four topics are emphasized: 1) The Development of Global Information Systems; 2) Large Space Structures Applications; 3) Space as an Energy Base for Mankind; and 4) Likely Phases of …

By the language of the charter, this extends to scientific, technical and practical information. Thus, DOE has a statutory responsibility to ensure full and widespread transfer of its technology.

Each Laboratory conducts its own Technology Transfer Program as an integral part of the National Program, and the activities of the Laboratories are directed towards the National Goals. Because of specific and sometimes different needs in the various geographical regions and the different styles of technology …

Current Solar Applications And Economics, Douglass E. Root Apr 1978

Current Solar Applications And Economics, Douglass E. Root

Space Congress® Proceedings

Until relatively recently, man has been almost totally dependent on the sun to directly, or more often indirectly, provide energy for his well-being. High quality stored solar energy in the form of oil, natural gas and, to a lesser extent, coal have been in such great, demand during this century that they ' are being depleted at an intolerably high rate. Consequently, more "renewable" forms of energy are being considered—or more accurately, reconsidered. It was proven feasible to harness the wind, to collect sunlight and store it as heat, and to convert thermal energy stored in the oceans to do …

Energy Management Through Planning -The Florida Experience, Carlos S. Warren Apr 1978

Energy Management Through Planning -The Florida Experience, Carlos S. Warren

Space Congress® Proceedings

Developed dependence of the United States on oil and natural gas as primary energy sources is especially acute in Florida, where ninety (90%) of the state's energy needs comes from these two sources. Since Florida only produces enough oil and natural gas to meet the equivalent of fifteen (15%) of its energy needs, it is dependent on other domestic and foreign sources to meet its present and growing energy requirements. Of the petroleum products consumed as fuel in Florida, approximately sixty (60%) originates outside the United States.

Furthermore, the health of Florida's economy is extremely sensitive to energy issues. Florida's largest …

Space Power For Space, J. P. Mullin Apr 1978

Space Power For Space, J. P. Mullin

Space Congress® Proceedings

The total energy demanded by space missions of the future is expected to exceed past needs by orders of magnitude. The unit costs of this energy must be reduced from present levels if these missions are to be carried out at projected budget levels. The broad employment of electric propulsion and the capability to utilize novel high power sensors hinge on the availability of systems lighter by factors of ten or more than have flown to date. The NASA program aimed at providing the technological basis to meet these demands is described in this paper. Research and technology efforts in …

An Economist Looks At Solar Energy: The Government's Role, Elliot J. Roseman Apr 1978

An Economist Looks At Solar Energy: The Government's Role, Elliot J. Roseman

Space Congress® Proceedings

The economist speaks in terms of free enterprise, and of competition. This most pure state of economic existence, where all economic textbooks begin, is a rare occurrence in the real world, however. The energy market is a notable example of how government involvement has skewed consumer choices. This is as it should be, for we expect the public decision making process to involve more than just considerations of economy.

This paper will place solar energy in the context of a marketplace for energy, and justify the role of government in influencing solar energy market development and market penetration. It will …

Identification Of Cost Effective Energy Conservation Methods, H. S. Bierenbaum, W. H. Boggs

Space Congress® Proceedings

In addition to a successful program of readily implemented conservation actions for reducing building energy consumption at Kennedy Space Center, recent detailed analyses have identified further substantial savings for buildings representative of technical facilities designed when energy costs were low. The techniques employed for determination of these energy savings consisted of facility configuration analysis, power and lighting measurements, detailed computer simulations and simulation verifications. Use of these methods resulted in identification of projected energy savings as large as $330,000 a year (approximately fwo year breakeven period) in a single building. Application of these techniques to other commercial buildings is discussed.
