Selective Article Delivery, G. A. Somerfield Jun 1983

Selective Article Delivery, G. A. Somerfield

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Online searching of databases is rapidly changing traditional methods of information retrieval by making it easier to identify relevant single articles. The databases cover a wider range of journals than is of ten available in the local library, which is simultaneously tending to reduce its coverage in response to severe budget pressures. Consequently, many single documents are provided as photocopies through the network of major lending libraries since few publishers supply single articles other than reprints at the time the journal is published.

Virtually all of this document delivery relies heavily upon physical transport of a document from one place …

Periodicals Collections In Academic Libraries Of The Federal Republic Of Germany: Development And Managerial Aspects, Richard Landwehrmeyer Jun 1983

Periodicals Collections In Academic Libraries Of The Federal Republic Of Germany: Development And Managerial Aspects, Richard Landwehrmeyer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Academic libraries in the Federal Republic of Germany had, after World War II, to devote their main activities on collection development with emphasis on periodical collections. Circumstances recommended decentralized cooperative acquisition programmes coordinated and supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Besides these decentralized special collections, local serials collections developed in number and coverage to a fair standard: the traditional universities were enlarged, former Technische Hochschulen expanded to full universities, new universities were founded. Both local and regional/supra-regional activities led up to acceptable satisfaction rates. These were positively influenced by the creation of periodical holding lists (local, regional, national) , culminating in …

Open Access Use Of Serials Collections, Arja-Riitta Haarala Jun 1983

Open Access Use Of Serials Collections, Arja-Riitta Haarala

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The paper reviews briefly use studies concerned with periodicals and serials collections from the point of view of methodology. A "bundling" method for the measurement of open access use of serials collection is presented . Results of a study carried out in 1979 at Helsinki University of Technology Library are reported. The sample consisted of 1487 titles. 212 titles formed a core group of serials. They cavered 50% of the total use. 50% of the sample cavered 90% of the usage. Language and subject distributions for serials not used and for the core group are also given. The care group …

Serials Education Or How To Nail Jelly To The Wall, David P. Woodworth Jun 1983

Serials Education Or How To Nail Jelly To The Wall, David P. Woodworth

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The continuing and growing importance attached to serials in the broadest sense, both as an archival souree and an information disseminating agency, requires a complete understanding of the various, and many, ramifications involved in writing, producing, documenting, disseminating, storing, and disposing of the information concerned. The current economic situation has prompted an even closer scrutiny and evaluation of methods involved, and the importance, of this form of literature.

The appreciation of serials varies considerably in practice from librarian to librarian and, more importantly, from library school to library school. Acknowledging this fact the Department of Library and Information Studies at …

Serials And "Grey Literature", Dieter Schmidmaier Jun 1983

Serials And "Grey Literature", Dieter Schmidmaier

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

"Grey literature" is literature which is not directly accessible. Its procurement, exploitation, storage and incorporation in information systems can only be carried out under complicated conditions.

Journals in the sense of "Grey literature" are:

  1. (Scientific) journals published by universities, academies and research institutes, as well as periodic publications about the results of research issued by firms engaged in such work.
  2. Journals and newspapers published by parties, organisations, associations, cooperatives, companies, libraries and museums.
  3. Journals which do not contain original scientific contributions, as well as those issued by book clubs and other organisations which publish technical literature and also belles-lettres.

The …

Periodical Acquisition In The Central Library Of The Veszprém University Of Chemical Engineering, Anna Domotor Jun 1983

Periodical Acquisition In The Central Library Of The Veszprém University Of Chemical Engineering, Anna Domotor

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In these days, improving bibliographic service, SDI and on-line bibliographies increased the need for original documents, including periodicals. However, price increases severly limit the acquisition possibilities.

In the Central Library of the Veszprém University of Chemical Engineering, the computerized chemical bibliographic system provides a complete overwiew of the world literature of chemistry. The libraries have to provide the required documents for their users. Therefore, the objective of our acquisition policy is to secure the most important and the most frequently used periodicals of chemistry and chemical engineering, and to cover as much of the users' requests from our own collection …

A Model For Storage Of Different Volumes Of A Journal In Electronic Data Processing: The Dortmund Online Library System Dobis, Martin Büren Jun 1983

A Model For Storage Of Different Volumes Of A Journal In Electronic Data Processing: The Dortmund Online Library System Dobis, Martin Büren

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The contribution deals with the processing of periodical volumes by the Dortmund Online Library System. As an integrated system DOBIS has to consider the divergent requisitions of circulation and cataloguing. For catalogue output it makes available bibliographically correct descriptions of the entire periodical. For circulation it provides information concerning the single periodical volume and its non-bibliographic data, e.g. status and circulation conditions. The bibliographic description and the affiliated volumes are connected in the data base by sorted references. By this means it is possible to show on the screen a list of the volumes belonging to a periodical in inverse …

Serials Cuts (And The Use Of A Blunt Knife), Hazel M. Woodward, A. J. Evans Jun 1983

Serials Cuts (And The Use Of A Blunt Knife), Hazel M. Woodward, A. J. Evans

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

There must be few librarians that have not had to make cuts in serials budgets in recent years - if not for lack of direct financial resources then at least due to the change in the dollar rate. Can we carry out such cuts 'scientifically' or is it usually a case of educated guesswork perhaps backed up by departmental recommendations ? Can we rely on faculty members' expressed needs or should we resort to hiding the journal until (or indeed if ever) he screams for it? Do our academics in any case ever view their own subscriptions and recommendations critically? …

Online Serials Control At The Eth Library, Rudolph Nöethiger Jun 1983

Online Serials Control At The Eth Library, Rudolph Nöethiger

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Since 1975 the ETH Library uses an automated periodicals control system called PEKOS (PEriodica-KOntroll-System). Version I, which could not yet handle title updates online, was soon replaced by the enhanced version of PEKOS-2.

A completely revised version, called PEKOS-3 was developed and implemented in the course of 1982. Some main functions of PEKOS are:

  • A fast method of identification for incoming copies using a simple mechanism for the abbreviation of titles
  • each single incoming issue is recorded
  • all recorded information on holdings can be queried and retrieved
  • reminders are issued periodically (a list of all claims issued is printed weekly …

Serials Automation: Fact Or Phobia - A Progress Report, Dan Tonkery, Rebecca T. Lenzini Jun 1983

Serials Automation: Fact Or Phobia - A Progress Report, Dan Tonkery, Rebecca T. Lenzini

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Even with the myriad of technological achievements in the computer industry and the advancements in software development, the library profession has not widely accepted the automation of the serials processing activities. Only a small number of organizations have successfully or fully automated serials. The Univeristy of California, Los Angeles, has one of the largest and most successful online serials processing systems in operation in North America. With their nineteen libraries containing some 70,000 serial titles, the computerization of serials processing is technologically sound and cost effective. A discussion of the system features, the technological issues that were addressed, and the …

Automated Serials Handling: The Perfect Future? The Swets Concept For Serials Control At An Affordable Price, Arnoud De Kemp Jun 1983

Automated Serials Handling: The Perfect Future? The Swets Concept For Serials Control At An Affordable Price, Arnoud De Kemp

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In this paper some fundamental aspects of automated serials handling will be covered. Comments are based on a decade of in-house experience of an international periodicals subscription agency.

Can an agent actively contribute to library automation? Our answer is: yes.

Similarities and differences between books (monographs) and serials from the automation point of view: acquisition, cataloguing, inquiry, circulation, administration and management.

What can be automated and what is worthwhile economically?

Can the break-even point be clearly defined?

Should serials be part of an integrated library system or are they better off in an independent system?

Serials Handling In Essen University Library, A. H. Helal Jun 1983

Serials Handling In Essen University Library, A. H. Helal

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

It is so much published about serials automation that it is very difficult for librarians to give an up-to-date information and to cover the immense amount of information about the mysteries of serials automation. However, the routines in a manual series department have proved to be similar in all libraries and are equal to all new developments. Only on this base and with deep knowledge of serials procedures it is possible to develop new techniques, i.e. automated procedures that could be feasible and considered. Serials automation is no more a puzzle as documented by this IATUL meeting. A very wide …

A Survey Of Iatul For Serials Automation - Future Prospects, Dennis Shaw, Niel Sly Jun 1983

A Survey Of Iatul For Serials Automation - Future Prospects, Dennis Shaw, Niel Sly

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Developments in serials automation since the first batch-produced catalogues are briefly surveyed. The reason for early failures are identified and it is shown how the elimination of the problems encountered has been possible through inter-library cooperation together with enhancements in computer systems reliability. It is apparent that many university libraries in North America now have successful serials automation systems in operation.

In order to assess the situation in Europe and the rest of the world a questionnaire was sent to all IATUL members in February 1983 and it elicited a 53% response. The results are tabulated to show the range …

Several Experimental Trials At The Kanazawa Institute Of Technology Library Center Using Its Online System, K. Kadota

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Kanazawa Institute of Technology Library Center (KIT-LC) was established in June 1982 with the aim to collect one million books and ten million informations such as theses, essays etc. For the construction and realization of the LC keen attentions were paid and numerous attempts were made to establish an ideal technological special library in Japan. In other words the KIT-LC is in fact an experimentation in Japan as exemplified in the following seven points:

(1) KIT-LC basically has four functions, namely the educational center and the research center, which are self-evident at any university libraries, the center for the graduate …

The University Library Hannover And Technische Informationsbibliothek As A Library Of Last Resort - Or As A Library Of First Resort. Some Aspects Of The Operation Of The Largest Technical Library In The Federal Republic Of Germany, H. Drubba Jun 1983

The University Library Hannover And Technische Informationsbibliothek As A Library Of Last Resort - Or As A Library Of First Resort. Some Aspects Of The Operation Of The Largest Technical Library In The Federal Republic Of Germany, H. Drubba

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Technische Informationsbibliothek Hannover (TIB) is one of the four central subject libraries in the Federal Republic of Germany. TIB was founded in 1959 and established in Hannover because here a fairly large and comprehensive technical library existed, the present University Library Hannover (UB Hannover).

Both libraries receive among themselves currently about 19.000 serials (among this number many of the Soviet 'Trudy' or 'Sbornik' type series). Not only the literature of technology is collected but also of the basic sciences (mathematics, physics, and chemistry). The serials are collected comprehensively, regardless of language, country of origin, or 'scientific' level, in fact a …

Resource Sharing: The Pesent Situation And The Likely Effect Of Electronic Technology, Maurice B. Line Jun 1983

Resource Sharing: The Pesent Situation And The Likely Effect Of Electronic Technology, Maurice B. Line

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The increasing attention given to resource sharing as a concept is not matched by practical progress; shortage of funds makes it more desirable but less practicable, whether libraries try to share their own resources or share a central facility. Many of the obstacles to sharing, such as limited local resources and the inability to handle much external demand, are intrinsic and cannot be solved by technology, but it can nevertheless alleviate some of the procedural hindrances, such as union list construction, maintenance and access and the transmission and switching of requests. The application of electronic technology to document transmission is …

A National Serials Collection In The Netherlands, J. Zandvliet Jun 1983

A National Serials Collection In The Netherlands, J. Zandvliet

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

A plan has been developed in the Netherlands to share the responsibility for the national science serials collection amongst a large number of libraries. This is an answer to decreasing funding, but it flows from an older tradition of cooperative efforts in interlibrary loans and the union catalogues. For some time, three national subject libraries have worked together in SALINFO, the Science Literature and Information Network, to coordinate the acquisition and cancellation of science periodicals. Seeing that a wider approach was necessary, SALINFO took the initiative to invite more libraries to participate. It became apparant that the key to success …
