"Lone Star," A Small Communication Satellite For Texas, J.P. Andrews, N. Eaker, J.D. King
Small Satellite Conference
The Texas State Legislature has passed a bill recommending that the state examine the feasibility of developing a "home grown" satellite for communications applications. Such a satellite would be built in Texas by a state, industry and university consortium with the intent that it be launched by a Texas built launch vehicle. This paper reports on a quick look design and trade-off study that was performed to determine the characteristics and possible configurations that such a small satellite system would have. The communications link budget is discussed and used to define the communications payload that would be carried by the …

Small Satellite Conference
BREM-SAT is a small scientific satellite being financed by the BMFT (German Ministry of Research and Technology). It will be launched from the Space Shuttle during the German D-2 mission (September 1992) into a 300 km orbit with 28.5° inclination. Although the volume is limited, due to the CAP (Complex Autonomous Payload) programme requirements, the satellite payload includes six different scientific experiments. Futhermore, within this mission a new technology will be demonstrated.

Design Of An Electrically-Propelled Asteroid Rendezvous Probe Launched As A Secondary Payload, Ralph Lorenz
Small Satellite Conference
This paper summarises a design study undertaken as a final year project for the author’s B.Eng in Aerospace Systems Engineering. A spacecraft design is outlined for a vehicle to perform a rendezvous with a near earth asteroid after being launched as a secondary payload into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. The 380 kg (dry) spacecraft would use a bipropellant chemical propulsion system to manoeuvre in, and escape from Earth orbit. Interplanetary maneuvering would be accomplished with an ion propulsion system.
Microspacecraft And Earth Observation: The Electrical Field (Elf) Measurement Project, F.J. Redd, T.A. Olsen
Microspacecraft And Earth Observation: The Electrical Field (Elf) Measurement Project, F.J. Redd, T.A. Olsen
Small Satellite Conference
Past attempts to map the earth's electrical field have been severely limited by the lack of simultaneous global measurements. Previous measurements have been made by sounding rocket and satellite borne sensors, but these measurements have covered only singular points in the field. These satellite observations are augmented by ground radar (incoherent scatter) plasma drift measurements; however, only six ground-based installations are producing such local electrical field maps. The expansion of this ground-based radar network to meet a global objective is politically and financially impossible. Global electrical field maps constructed by forcing mathematically formulated models to fit this limited set of …

Small Satellite Conference
A small research satellite is being developed by the Royal Aerospace Establishment, UK, for the purpose of in-orbit technology research. The satellite is planned for launch on an Ariane 4 mission into the severe environment of a geostationary transfer orbit in which it will remain. This paper addresses the challenges which have arisen in designing an attitude control system for a satellite in this unusual orbit. The paper includes discussion of how recovery from an initial tumbling state is to be performed why spin stabilization has been selected, how magnetorquers can be used to control the attitude and finally the …

Altitude Reconstitution Of A Small Scientific Satellite Using A Limited Set Of On-Board Sensors, F. Martel, R. Warner, C. Wright, M. Psiaki
Small Satellite Conference
The ALEXIS spacecraft carries a limited set of attitude instruments on board. The scientific mission of ALEXIS requires "after the fact" knowledge of the spacecraft attitude at all times. Reconstitution of the attitude is performed as one of the permanent tasks of the microcomputer based ground station. ALEXIS carries a fine sun-sensor, an Infrared horizon crossing indicator and a magnetometer. Because of the orbital and attitude configurations horizon and sun will not be observed during sizable fractions of some orbits. The attitude will be estimated at all times by an extended fitter making use of whatever data is available. The …
Small Satellite Reaction Wheel Optimization, Ted Michaelis
Small Satellite Reaction Wheel Optimization, Ted Michaelis
Small Satellite Conference
The very "smallness" of small satellites mandates mass minimization. This paper addresses minimization of overall reaction wheel mass, including the incremental mass of the power subsystem needed to support the reaction wheel. The results are applicable to a wide range of wheel sizes and are suitable for optimization at the configuration level. For an average momentum and torque operating point, the minimization process yields wheel radius and angular velocity, as well as, the masses associated with the motor, wheel, housing, and power subsystems. Only four parameters are needed: the power supply mass penalty, a generalized motor constant, the wheel form …

Low Cost Attitude Sensors For Spacecraft, S. Auer, F.O. Von Bun
Small Satellite Conference
A short overview is presented on low cost attitude sensors developed by Applied Research Corporation. More or less existing technology has been used, but major emphasis was directed to considerably reduce the cost of these units without compromising their quality and reliability. Horizon and sun aspect sensors have been developed and manufactured. They were successfully flown on the space shuttle Atlantis (STS 34, October 18, 1989). We have further manufactured 10 horizon sensors and 15 sun aspect sensors and delivered them to Goddard (Wallops) Space Flight Center for future use on sounding rockets. The angular errors are about ±0.1" to …

Spaces - An Integrated Software Approach For Attitude Determination, Control And Pointing Systems Analysis, James Billing-Ross, Douglas Havenhill
Spaces - An Integrated Software Approach For Attitude Determination, Control And Pointing Systems Analysis, James Billing-Ross, Douglas Havenhill
Small Satellite Conference
The recent success of the Pegasus small satellite launch system by Orbital Sciences Corporation foreshadows radical changes to the satellite industry comparable to those which occurred in the computer industry when personal computers became commercially available alternatives to mainframes. In order to support low cost, fixed price contracts for small commercial satellites, engineering design cycles for satellites and satellite subsystems will have to be shortened, and accomplished with fewer staff to meet more stringent cost and schedule goals. To accomplish this, better design tools must be made available which will allow the mission analysis, requirements analysis, and other systems engineering …
Attitude Determination And Control For The Multi-Mission Space Payload Platform (Spp), Charles Benet, John Stetson, Jr.
Attitude Determination And Control For The Multi-Mission Space Payload Platform (Spp), Charles Benet, John Stetson, Jr.
Small Satellite Conference
The first artificial satellite, Sputnik, was a "smallsat" of sort with its 58 cm. diameter and mass of just under 84 kg. Since then, design trends have produced progressively larger spacecraft tracking the launch vehicle throw capabilities. This approach, however, is being challenged today and, although large satellites will continue to meet global requirements cost effectively, there is a need to accommodate specific payloads with smaller spacecraft buses. The economy of scale that called for larger satellites in the past, is now focusing on a multi-mission design approach. A general purpose spacecraft bus can be designed to support a wide …

Titan Ii Secondary Payload Capability, Aubrey Butts, Milo Nance, Roger Odle
Small Satellite Conference
Small satellite programs are often faced with the prospect of flying as a secondary payload because of size or funding considerations. This paper discusses a concept for flying such payloads on flights already scheduled on the Titan SLV program over the next decade. The Titan II has the capability of inserting over 4200 Ibs into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and larger payloads on ballistic trajectories from which higher orbits can be achieved when kick motors are used. Orbit changes are possible depending on the specific altitudes and payloads involved. Of the existing 13 remaining missions currently scheduled to fly on …

Nasa Secondary Payload Plans, Policies And Requirements, Karen Poniatowski
Small Satellite Conference
Whenever there is excess launch vehicle capacity on either the Space Shuttle or an expendable launch vehicle (ELV), a logical spinoff is to carry a secondary or piggyback payload and provide a relatively low-cost flight opportunity for small satellites, instruments or experiments. NASA typically deploys moderate to large spacecraft as primary payloads on either the Space Shuttle or ELV's in support of the Agency’s scientific, planetary and technology objectives. NASA has flown over a dozen piggyback payloads on the Delta rocket in the past. The Small Expendable Deployment System (SEDS) experiment, originally baselined for launch on the Shuttle, is currently …

Traditional Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) is composed largely of custom designed equipment costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and usable only for the spacecraft for which it was designed. Due to the budgetary restraints associated with small satellite programs, non-traditional alternatives were explored. This paper describes an approach to EGSE design which utilizes commercially available products and costs considerably less than traditional equipment. Reusability of the equipment for subsequent spacecraft designs or for integration into ground station equipment is discussed. Various options are available for enhancement of the system to accommodate different telemetry rate and storage requirements, simulation needs, …

Field Command Of A Tactical Satellite System, Ron Turner, Stephen Hopkins
Small Satellite Conference
One way to ensure tactical satellite systems remain fully responsive to a field commander's needs would be to place all command and control aspects of the system under direct field control. This paper presents the results of a study to evaluate the feasibility of field command of a notional tactical imaging satellite system. The study indicates that such a system is feasible. A satellite constellation can be designed to provide the field commander with significant, timely, tactical data. The hardware is available, or will be within the near term, that enables field command and control facilities manned by a team …

A Multi-User Carrier Structure For Deploying Pegasus-Launched Micro-Satellites, J.A. King, N.J. Beidleman, P.M. Stoltz
Small Satellite Conference
Now that the viability of the Pegasus air launched booster has been demonstrated, it is possible, and indeed appropriate, to devise methods for exploiting the launcher so that it can launch multiple micro-satellites. Such spacecraft may be launched for a single user, or the capacity of a single launcher may be divided among multiple users. In fact, not all of the satellites on a single launch need to be placed into the same orbit. This paper describes a concept, developed by OSC, to place multiple micro-satellites into various orbits using a single Pegasus launch vehicle. The concept makes use of …
