Utilization Of Small Commercial Grade Nickel Cadmium (Nicd) Cells In Low Earth Orbit (Leo) Applications, T. Darone, P. Stiffler, R. Bonometti, B. Carter, E. Eng

Small Satellite Conference

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has sponsored the Advanced Space Technology Program (ASTP) to enhance the cost-effectiveness and responsiveness of military space systems. One of the major themes of this program is the development of highly capable small satellites, generally referred to as ''LightSats," which can perform selected defense missions at relatively low cost. A key element of the programmatic approach is the utilization of commercial grade parts and practices where practical, as opposed to the much more conservative aerospace grade parts. ASTP has incorporated commercial grade batteries into its first generation LightSats; however, an attempt has been …

A Flexible Autonomous Power Management System For Small Spacecraft, Ron Dunbar, Gordon Hardman Aug 1990

A Flexible Autonomous Power Management System For Small Spacecraft, Ron Dunbar, Gordon Hardman

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites have used a variety of methods for regulating battery charge and managing solar power variations, mainly adapted from standard practice on larger spacecraft. A computer controlled power management subsystem is described with advantages for small spacecraft. Small spacecraft must be more parsimonious with power because of mass and surface area limitations. The controller provides separate modes for dealing with this scarce resource in load-limited, solar array-limited and battery-limited regimes. A microcontroller implements the strategies chosen for each regime, and is capable of fully autonomous operation. Algorithms have been developed to allow this controller to implement a self-adjusting digital …

Modular Attitude Determination And Control System For Small Satellites, Vaughn Selby Aug 1990

Modular Attitude Determination And Control System For Small Satellites, Vaughn Selby

Small Satellite Conference

In order to meet the cost goals of small satellites, attitude determination and control problems must be solved using standardized components. Small satellite attitude control systems must feature performance, versatility, and above all, low cost Large, custom designed, high cost attitude control systems have no place in the small satellite community. A modular concept of attitude control is presented which will allow ambitious performance and cost goals to be attained. Basic building blocks allow mission specific goals to be reached with a minimum of effort and expense. Several basic modules are described and applied to a number of representative mission …

Preliminary Design Of The Naval Postgraduate School Petite Amateur Navy Satellite (Pansat) Electric Power And Communications Subsystems, Daniel Sakoda, Mike Noble, Steve Paluszek

Small Satellite Conference

The Naval Postgraduate School's (NPS) Space Systems Academic Group (SSAG) is continuing the design and development of the Petite Amateur Navy Satellite (PANSAT), a small communications satellite. The objectives of PANSAT are to provide: (i.) an educational tool for the officer students at NPS, (ii.) digital communications using spread spectrum in the amateur band, and (iii.) a low cost, space-based platform for small experiments. PANSAT is designed for an altitude of 480 km and an inclination greater than 28.5. The satellite weight is 150 Ibs and has no attitude control. The expected life of the satellite is 2 years. This …

Sealed Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries For Small Satellite Applications, J. Brill, D. Coates, P. Bemis, S. Vankatesan, M.A. Fetcenko, S.R. Ovshinsky Aug 1990

Sealed Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries For Small Satellite Applications, J. Brill, D. Coates, P. Bemis, S. Vankatesan, M.A. Fetcenko, S.R. Ovshinsky

Small Satellite Conference

Sealed, nickel-metal hydride cells are being developed for aerospace applications by Eagle-Picher Industries, Inc. Sizes ranging from 3.5 ampere-hours to 20 ampere-hours are targeted for the small satellite program. The nickel-metal hydride system offers nearly twice the energy density of aerospace nickel-cadmium cells with no memory effect. The cells contain no cadmium, mercury or other toxic materials. The system operates at low pressure and offers significant cost advantages over the nickel-hydrogen system. The cells exhibit excellent overcharge and overdischarge capability with cycle life similar to that of nickel-cadmium. Cells are also being assembled and tested in a number of sizes …

Small Capacity Low Cost (Nih2) Design Concept For Commercial, Military And Higher-Volume Aerospace Applications, James Wheeler, William Cook, Ron Smith Aug 1990

Small Capacity Low Cost (Nih2) Design Concept For Commercial, Military And Higher-Volume Aerospace Applications, James Wheeler, William Cook, Ron Smith

Small Satellite Conference

Nickel-Hydrogen (Ni-H2) batteries have become the technology of choice for both commercial and defense-related satellites in geosynchronous orbits. Their use for low-earth-orbit (LEO) applications is not as advanced, but seems just as inevitable because of their inherent advantages over nickel-cadmium batteries. These include superior energy density, longer cycle life, and better tolerance to over-charge and reversal. Ni-H2 cells have the added advantage in both construction and operation of not presenting the environmental possibility of cadmium pollution. Unfortunately, but necessarily, the design of these cells has been driven to high cost by the sophistication of the satellites and their uses. Now, …

A Flexible Object Oriented Spacecraft Operating System (Fos), Dave Ladouceur Aug 1990

A Flexible Object Oriented Spacecraft Operating System (Fos), Dave Ladouceur

Small Satellite Conference

Satellite Operating Software has traditionally been highly specialized custom software which operates one satellite according to deterministic rules. Software changes are usually accomplished with a complete reload from the ground, and performing patches require explicit knowledge of memory maps, variable locations, etc. and can often result in long term satellite down times. As computer, sensor and communication technology increases, more and more of the computing, routing and decision functions of small satellite systems are occurring onboard, and a need exists for adaptable flexible software. The object oriented approach to satellite operating systems provides a malleable system, resilient to failure, distributable …

An Innovative On-Board Processor For Lightsats, R.M. Henshaw, B.W. Ballard, J.R. Hayes, D.A. Lohr

Small Satellite Conference

The Applied Physics Laboratory has developed a flightworthy custom microprocessor that increases capability and reduces development costs of lightsat science instruments. This device, which APL calls the FRISC (Forth Reduced Instruction Set Computer), directly executes the high level language called Forth, which is ideally suited to the multitasking control and data processing environment of a spaceborne instrument processor. The FRlSC (which is available commercially as the SC32) will be flown as the on-board processor in the Magnetic Field Experiment on the Swedish Space Corporations’ Freja satellite. APL has achieved a significant increase in on-board processing capability with no increase in …

Orientation And Stabilization Of Dual Spin Satellites Using Aerodynamic Torque, P.A. Finlayson, C.D. Clayton Aug 1990

Orientation And Stabilization Of Dual Spin Satellites Using Aerodynamic Torque, P.A. Finlayson, C.D. Clayton

Small Satellite Conference

Nadir pointing satellites can experience large atmospheric torques during low perigee parking orbits. Countering these torques can quickly saturate the momentum wheels or consume unacceptable amounts of reaction gas, making earth pointing near perigee impossible or impractical. This paper describes a technique which allows dual momentum wheel spacecraft to exploit this aerodynamic torque to achieve a stable, aerodynamically neutral orientation. In addition, this torque, coupled with the spacecraft gyro-dynamics and orbit rate, results in a natural alignment of the momentum wheel bias vector with the orbit plane normal. From this known orientation, returning to nadir pointing is simple, requiring only …

In-Orbit Radiation Effects Monitoring On The Uosat Satellites, Craig Underwood Aug 1990

In-Orbit Radiation Effects Monitoring On The Uosat Satellites, Craig Underwood

Small Satellite Conference

Since the summer of 1988, radiation effects, in particular single event upset (SEU) phenomena, have been monitored in the three mass semiconductor memory systems onboard the University of Surrey's UoSAT-2 satellite, which is in a 700 km, near-polar low-Earth orbit. Almost 5000 events have now been logged by the spacecraft, and these have been assembled into a database for analysis by ground-based software. This software has allowed the SEU sensitivity of different device types to be analyzed, and the relative performance of the Mostek 4116, Texas 4416 NMOS DRAMs, the Toshiba TC5516, Harris 6564 and 6516, and the Hitachi 6264 …
