Socioeconomic Status, Obesity, Breast Cancer, And 5-Year Survival Among Men, Taye Oloruntobi Olabode
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although male breast cancer (MBC) is rare, affecting 2,000 men in the United States each year and comprising approximately 1% of all breast cancer diagnoses, mortality for those diagnosed with MBC is significantly higher than for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Recent research on the disparities in mortality rates between men and women revealed that there may be unexplained factors for the diagnostic disparities between men and women. Bandura’s (1986) SCT was used as the theoretical framework for this quantitative study. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to determine whether there was an association between socioeconomic status, obesity, stage …

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project Staff Education To Enhance Nursing Competency Through Simulation Technology, Mollie Mae Ellington
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Simulation-based training is a key component of nursing education, providing immersive, hands-on experiences that enhance clinical skills in a controlled environment. In the local organization, leadership determined there was an underutilization of advanced simulation equipment stemming from a lack of standardized training among staff. Thus, the purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to determine whether an educational intervention focused on simulation improved competency among nurses at a local health care organization. To measure competency, 15 items from the Nurse Professional Competence Scale were used. Fifty-eight individuals were invited to participate in the educational intervention, and a …

American Sign Language (ASL) courses in U.S. higher education often inadequately incorporate multicultural content, with many educators lacking knowledge of multiculturalism and relevant cultural resources. The purpose of this study was the exploration of ASL educators' perspectives on the incorporation of multicultural content in ASL classrooms and the identified barriers to doing so. The multilevel inclusion framework and the integrated framework for a culture of diversity offered a conceptual lens for the study. For this basic qualitative design, semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 ASL educators with at least 3 years of experience. In the reflexive thematic analysis of the …

Perceptions Of Effectiveness Of Eye Movement Desensitized And Reprocessing For Those Diagnosed With Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Megan C. Stefanelli
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a short-term psychotherapy approach first introduced in 1987 by Francine Shapiro. Currently, EMDR is only a first-line treatment to relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, this treatment modality could be expanded to generalized anxiety disorder if additional research was available. Further, research has demonstrated the effectiveness of EMDR from a quantitative perspective; however, there has been scarce research supporting the use of EMDR as a first-line treatment approach from a qualitative perspective. This hermeneutic qualitative study aimed to explore the psychological and physiological effects of EMDR on the brain from a …

Military Spouses’ Perceptions Of Family Stress And Resilience During Multiple Relocations, Mauranda Nikki Jones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to increase understanding of military spouses’ perceptions of family stress and resilience during multiple relocations. On average, active-duty military families relocate every 2 to 4 years, placing additional stress on them. It has been argued that military spouses, because of their central roles, are uniquely positioned to demonstrate resilience, thus providing an important perspective for this study. Understanding specific risks and resiliency from the perspectives of service members’ spouses can enrich knowledge from which human service professionals can learn. The study was grounded in the resiliency model of stress, adjustment, and …
