Prostate Cancer Screening Intention Among African American Males Ages 40 To 65 Years, Paul L. Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American men are at a higher risk of developing and dying from prostate cancer (PCa) compared with any other race or ethnic group. Despite prostate cancer screening (PCS) recommendations, African American men are less likely to be screened for PCa compared with any other race or ethnic group. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence the intentions of African American men to obtain a PCS. A nonexperimental cross-sectional research design was used to identify factors associated with the intention to obtain PCS. The theoretical framework for the study was the social-ecological model which posits that …
Impact Of Chlorpyrifos Exposure On Colorectal Cancer In Agricultural Communities In Ohio, Vicky Knisley-Henry
Impact Of Chlorpyrifos Exposure On Colorectal Cancer In Agricultural Communities In Ohio, Vicky Knisley-Henry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cancer diagnosis in the United States, and second in Ohio, for both men and women. In 2019, there were an estimated 145,000 cases of new CRC diagnoses and will lead to more than 50,000 deaths. Results from a systematic review indicate that chlorpyrifos use in agriculture is linked to the incidence of breast and lung cancers and has a possible association with CRC. Grounded in the social-ecological model, this study investigated the association between exposure to chlorpyrifos and CRC rates in agricultural communities in Ohio. The quantitative cohort design method utilized secondary data …
Understanding Calculus Through Maple-Based Dynamic Visualization Tools, Segla Kokou Kossivi
Understanding Calculus Through Maple-Based Dynamic Visualization Tools, Segla Kokou Kossivi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
First-year college students experience difficulties in understanding the concepts of derivatives and integrals. At the postsecondary level, the use of static visualization and other traditional instruction delivery methods often are unable to meet students' needs in calculus. This problem is current and essential in the field of education and needs consideration to enhance the method of teaching calculus. The rationale for this study was to scrutinize the effects of Maple dynamic visualization instructional activities, within the framework of the animation-visualization theory, on students' conceptual and procedural understanding of differential and integral calculus. The usage of a quantitative 2x2 factorial pretest-posttest …
Child Protection Workers' Experiences In Implementing Natural Mentoring With Older Foster Youth, Claudia Maxie
Child Protection Workers' Experiences In Implementing Natural Mentoring With Older Foster Youth, Claudia Maxie
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Emancipated foster youth are at risk for increased rates of unemployment, low educational attainment, reliance on public assistance, substance abuse, behavioral issues, homelessness, unplanned pregnancies, and illegal activities. Lack of connection to a caring adult when exiting foster care and emancipated foster youth's inadequate independent living skills are critical factors that could place young people at risk. Prior studies have shown that mentoring is a means of providing foster youth with protection against psychological stress and promoting well-being; however, mentoring is not a widely used intervention in the child welfare system. There is limited research on the process of implementing …

School Social Workers And Perceived Barriers When Providing Services To Lgbtq Children, Jason Ray Bullard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The proliferation of bias and prejudicial attitudes towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) community have been studied and empirically recognized throughout modern history. School social workers, as the school-to-home mental health liaison, have a duty to protect and support vulnerable populations of students. Research supports the overarching need for specific support provision for young LGBTQ children as they often report not feeling safe or supported within educational settings, leading to an overall decreased sense of wellbeing. This study, based on critical race theory as well as normative theory and democracy, used qualitative semistructured interviews with …

Exploring Family-Centered Care From The Perspectives Of Home-Health Physical Therapists, James Mathews
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Older adults may need, or desire, caregiver and family involvement to avoid hospitalizations and institutionalizations. The caregivers of these older adults have the highest rates of burnout, injury, and turnover. Family-centered care (FCC) involves collaboration between healthcare practitioners, patients, family members, and caregivers. FCC is both established and effective in pediatric care settings. There is a paucity of evidence on how FCC is applied to older adult populations. Home health physical therapists (HHPTs) work with older adults in their homes and train both family members on how to safely handle and manage the care-dependent older adult. The purpose of this …
