Exploring Adversities Of Custodial Grandparents Transitioning From The Grandparent To Parent Role, Carmelita Dockery
Exploring Adversities Of Custodial Grandparents Transitioning From The Grandparent To Parent Role, Carmelita Dockery
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There are many familial and social disparities, including drug addiction and use, incarceration, abandonment, and sometimes the death of a biological parent, that cause grandparents to acquire custody of their grandchildren. Current public welfare policies in some states, however, may not adequately address the needs of custodial grandparents caring for grandchildren and little academic literature exists that explores the unique experiences of custodial grandparents. Using role theory as a foundation, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of custodial grandparents in a large mid-western city as their role transitions from grandparent to parent in order to inform …
Exploring Young Opioid Users’ Motivation To Seek Treatment For Substance Use Disorder, Patricia Gianotti-Avella
Exploring Young Opioid Users’ Motivation To Seek Treatment For Substance Use Disorder, Patricia Gianotti-Avella
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the past 15 years, the nonmedical use of opioids in the United States has reached epidemic proportions, resulting in a 21% increase in overdose fatalities. This surge in opioid use and dependence represents a shift in the demographic from inner-city populations over the age of 40 to young adults between the ages of 20 and 34 who dwell in primarily white suburban neighborhoods. Research has identified physicians’ liberal prescribing practices as one cause of this epidemic and has documented the ineffectiveness of current interventions with young addicts. The purpose of this narrative study was to gain insight into what …

Experiences Of Resiliency And Family Support In Older Women With Mental Illness, Dawn Harbin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lack of a support system for older females with mental illness may cause reduced resiliency skills and an increase in mental illness symptoms while they attempt to manage independent living. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the individual stories of older women living independently who suffer from a mental illness and have a support system. Social learning theory and self-efficacy theory provided the framework for the study. Data were collected from face-to-face interviews with 8 women ages 65-80 years who are in treatment at a mental health center in South Carolina. Findings from coding analysis showed that …

Student Voices In Teacher Evaluation: A Multilevel, Latent Factor Investigation Of Teacher Quality, Kathleen J. Hoff
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teacher effectiveness is a key driver of student achievement but persistently difficult to measure. Although precollege student surveys are one cost-effective alternative to traditional observation measures, little empirical research has been conducted on their factor structure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of the Tripod Survey, a widely adopted precollege survey, as a measure of teacher effectiveness. The dataset was the Measures of Effective Teaching (Year 1, N = 1,024 Grade 9 classroom sections, 20,500 students; Year 2, N = 488 Grade 9 classroom sections, 8,658 students). The dynamic model of educational effectiveness guided the study. …

Examining Liquidity, Growth Strategy, Capital Structure, And Earnings Growth, Steven R. Posey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many businesses experience financial deterioration after a growth period. Business leaders of firms with market capitalization value between $50 million and $300 million, known as microcap companies, might have an incomplete understanding of growth drivers. Grounded in the firm growth theory, the purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationship between liquidity, growth strategy, capital structure, and earnings growth. The population consisted of the more than 1,400 constituent firms from the 2019 Russell Microcap Index. Archival data from the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database were collected, organized, and analyzed for 119 randomly selected firms. Multiple regression …

Predictors Of Condom Use Among High School Students In North Carolina, Danielle Cierra Robinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The spread of sexually transmitted diseases is a major ongoing public health issue in North Carolina. Adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 years have consistently contributed to this trend. Researchers have found that condom use among high school students has decreased. High school students continue to engage in sex with multiple partners, with lack of knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases, even though sex education and prevention programs have been recommended. The purpose of this quantitative study was to evaluate the predictors of condom use among adolescents. The socioecological model theoretical framework was applied to guide this research involving …

The Sustainability Knowledge, Attitude, And Behavior Differences Between Green And Non-Green University Students, Rebekah Hart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has shown that green schools and sustainability education (SE) can improve learning, health, attitudes, and behaviors. They can also model the necessary community, societal, and global changes needed for sustainable living. However, most students do not attend green schools or receive adequate SE. Limited peer-reviewed studies have also examined the sustainability knowledge, attitude, and behavior differences between green and non-green university student populations. The theoretical foundation of the study was based on the theories of planned behavior and social identity theory. In order to fill the research gap, 606 undergraduates and graduates from 265 U.S. accredited green and non-green …

Predictors Of Hiv Testing Among African American Men Who Have Sex With Men, Jeanette Marie Higgins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections affect more than 1.2 million people living in the United States and disproportionately affect African Americans (AA) men who have sex with men (MSM). The numbers of those who have HIV infections are likely higher due to lack of HIV testing by all individuals living at risk for HIV in the United States. Prior research has been inconclusive in determining the exact cause of the disparity among AA MSM. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative secondary data study was to explore barriers to HIV testing within the AA MSM population. The sample for this study …

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Death certificates are currently being used by public health professionals and policy makers as a main source of public health surveillance data on suicide. The accuracy of death certificates in tracking and reporting suicides has not been well quantified or evaluated in the United States. Death certificates from other countries have been found to under-report suicide. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of death certificates in reporting suicides in the United States. The National Violence Death Reporting System (NVDRS) collects information on all …
Head Start Teachersâ Self-Efficacy And Experiences Teaching Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Leronda Phillips
Head Start Teachersâ Self-Efficacy And Experiences Teaching Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Leronda Phillips
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Autism spectrum disorders are pervasive developmental disorders in which a studentâs inability to communicate, undeveloped social skills, and restricted interests require intervention from trained professionals. Autism spectrum disorder is an eligibility for special education where students can be affected by the presence of a lack of qualified teachers. Teachers who work with students with special needs experience more frustration and burnout than do teachers of typical students; research has suggested that teachers with higher self-efficacy have more success than do teachers with lower self-efficacy. The studyâs theoretical basis was derived from Banduraâs self-efficacy theory. This phenomenological qualitative research study explored …
First Responders' Experience During The Initial Chaos In A Large-Scale Event, Amanda Jo Reese
First Responders' Experience During The Initial Chaos In A Large-Scale Event, Amanda Jo Reese
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is little focus on how first responders (e.g., firefighters, police officers, medical staff) experience the initial chaos immediately following a large-scale disaster. Previous research indicated that understanding the initial chaos of disaster response is imperative to keeping first responders safe and healthy. First responders may also reduce the perception of chaos by implementing situational awareness skills. This research study explored (a) how first responders experienced the initial chaos immediately following a large-scale disaster, (b) how first responders experienced their emotions (good or bad) and what, if any, emotions were present, (c) how their emotions affected job performance, and (d) …

Predictors Of Mental Health Services Use Among Survivors Of Domestic Violence Emotional Abuse, Liseth Sales
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Domestic violence (DV) affects over 80,000 million individuals a year in the United States. DV survivors who do not use mental health services are often revictimized or pass on patterns of abuse and unhealthy behaviors of DV to future generations. However, research on factors that inhibit DV survivors from seeking mental health care is limited. Using the behavioral model of health services use, which helps predict health services use by identifying predisposing, enabling, and need factors, this study investigated which predisposing, enabling, and need factors predict the utilization of mental health services by DV survivors who were emotionally abused. In …

Perceived Employment Barriers Involving Program Managers Assisting Unemployed Young African American Males, Michael P. Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For unemployed, young, African American males who face significant barriers to jobs, public employment training centers have become a critical last option. For 2016, the U.S. federal government appropriated more than $6.9 billion to states for Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act programs and approximately $3.4 billion in federal formula funding for partner programs. The research problem in this study concerns the lack of adequate employment-based policies and programs that guide the workforce employment process between program managers and recipients, in particular, young, African American males. Guided by Ingram, Schneider, and DeLeon’s theory of social construction and policy design, this study examined …
Curricular Policy Changes And College Readiness, Carol Ann Alexander
Curricular Policy Changes And College Readiness, Carol Ann Alexander
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was the uncertain influence of a local curricular policy change. Educators, policymakers, and communities need more data to determine the usefulness of changes in policy and practice because changes involve restructuring, resource allocation, and understanding the intended and unintended consequences of policy implementation. In the United States, fewer than 50% of high school graduates complete a college preparatory curriculum and are eligible to enter 4-year public state universities. The purpose of this ex post facto study was to investigate how a change in local curricular policy might have influenced high school graduates' college readiness …

The Impact Of Dietary Intake On Mortality Risk In Colorectal Cancer Survivors, Ellen Chow
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The colorectal cancer (CRC) survivor population is increasing in the United States. The lack of effective dietary recommendations in recurrence prevention undermines the health-related quality of life of survivors. Grounded in the socioecological model, dietary behavior is a personal-level risk factor that individuals may control. This study investigated the CRC-specific mortality risk as predicted by diet quality, dietary fiber intake, and dietary fat intake in hope of contributing to future dietary recommendations. A secondary analysis using data from 1,166 CRC survivors in the Multiethnic Cohort Study was analyzed via Cox proportional hazard regression models to estimate mortality risk. Results from …

Autism Spectrum Disorder And The Impact Of Attachment Behavior Toward Therapeutic Staff Support, Karen Kotchik Hughes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has indicated that levels of attachment behavior by individuals with intellectual disability toward professional staff in a residential setting prevent dysregulated behavior. Although challenging behaviors are not part of the diagnostic criteria for an ASD, these behaviors are frequently observed in the forms of property destruction and disruptive/aggressive behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the attachment relationship of individuals diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) toward the therapeutic support staff (TSS) assigned to their case as indicated by the display of challenging behaviors (self-injurious, stereotypical and aggressive behavior). Levels of attachment were measured by the …
