The Predictability Of Facebook Memorial Page Participation On Grief, Colleen Grote
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As the world's largest social networking site, Facebook, continues to grow in popularity, it is imperative for counselors and counselor educators to better understand how online environments impact all facets of life, including death. Grief behaviors on Facebook have been a focus of scholars since the launch of the social networking site in 2004. Researchers have demonstrated that Facebook memorial pages have a significant impact on the social and cultural practices related to death and memorialization for Facebook users. However, despite a rapid rise in research related to online mourning, researchers have yet been able to establish the potential risk …

Strategies For Identifying And Transferring Displaced Manufacturing Workers' Skills For Nonmanufacturing Sectors, Pamela Stanfield Jackson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Between 2000 and 2011, the United States suffered the loss of manufacturing jobs 6 times faster than the rate in the 20 years prior. North Carolina ranked first in manufacturing employment in 1992; however, in 2012 it ranked fourth. The loss of manufacturing jobs created a trend away from manufacturing industries to services industries. The purpose of this study was to explore strategies that nonmanufacturing managers use to facilitate the transferable skills of displaced manufacturing workers to nonmanufacturing industries. To address the problem, a purposeful sample of 3 nonmanufacturing managers in service industries was obtained from a major manufacturing city …

Parenting And Discipline Correlations With Social Supports For Single, African American Mothers, Veronica D. King
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Assistance to young, single, African American mothers requires adaptation to their environmental stressors along with reliance on social support. Further information is necessary for developing and supporting an appropriate model for delivery of that assistance. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine potential correlations between general social support and parenting skills and disciplinary practices amongst low-income, African American single mothers. Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory model supported this study to further develop an accurate perspective of African American families to inform more effective approaches to parenting. The participants for this correlational research design study were 78 mothers who had …
Work-Life Balance Of Women Employed Within State Government, Luisa Cunanan Martinez
Work-Life Balance Of Women Employed Within State Government, Luisa Cunanan Martinez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women in the U.S. workforce have been a focus of scholars since the onset of the 21st century, when work-life balance skewed in favor of the term work-life integration because professional working mothers found that balance was an unachievable ideal in the fast pace of the contemporary world. Accordingly, this research study examined the work-life challenges and career choices of women working in the public sector through the framework of the Kaleidoscope Career Model (KCM). While research has been conducted on women in corporate America, there have been limited studies exploring the work-life challenges and career decisions of women working …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Parent Experiences That Influence Positive Adoption Outcomes, Deena Shelton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Children who age out of foster care face adjustments and mental health issues at higher rates than their peers, but those who are adopted have the opportunity to heal from previous trauma and experience better outcomes. To create healthy family systems for adopted children, adoptive parents need support and guidance as they personally adjust and help their children adjust to a new family system. Previous research has focused on child identifiers rather than on the broader family system in efforts to understand adoption success and failure. In this transcendental phenomenological study, adoptive parents provided their lived experiences of support during …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The use of the Internet to gamble has become increasingly prevalent in recent years.
Although researchers have suggested that adult Internet gamblers are at high risk for
developing a gambling disorder, few studies, overall, have been conducted on the effects
of Internet gambling. Furthermore, conflicting research exists regarding what moderates
gambling-related problems. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if
age, gender, and emotions prior to the gambling experience are related predictors of
Internet problem gambling severity. A retrospective design was used. The pathways
model was used to support the belief that emotions felt before an Internet gambling …

Perceptions Of Nursing As A Career By African American College Students Attending Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Brenda Marie Owens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Previous studies and official organizations have indicated that African Americans are underrepresented in the healthcare workforce and that patients belonging to minority groups feel they are treated slightly differently in healthcare settings. Limited research examines perceptions of the nursing profession among a variety of demographic groups, and exploratory investigations into the perceptions of nursing as a career by African Americans are limited. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to explore perceptions of nursing as a career by African American students who attend an undergraduate program at a historically black college or university (HBCU) in an attempt to further …
Evaluating Nursing Pain Assessment Documentation With The Pediatric Client, Aziza Alexander
Evaluating Nursing Pain Assessment Documentation With The Pediatric Client, Aziza Alexander
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Pain is often seen as a primary complaint in the pediatric emergency department (ED). Assessment and documentation of pain are integral to effective pain management, and nurses are responsible for documenting pain assessment. Nursing documentation is essential for ensuring continuous, safe, high-quality care. Evidence shows nurses are inadequately documenting pain assessment and reassessment and not always using appropriate pain scales in a busy, cosmopolitan children's hospital ED. The practice-focused question that guided this project was: How does an educational module and change in electronic health record pain assessment flowsheet increase the nurses' compliance with initial documentation of pain? An educational …
