Transition Of Care Guideline For Reducing Heart Failure Hospital Readmission, Geeti Farrahi Jan 2018

Transition Of Care Guideline For Reducing Heart Failure Hospital Readmission, Geeti Farrahi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Heart failure (HF) patients are among the populations with the highest rates of hospital readmission within 30 days of discharge. Because of the 2010 Health Care Reform legislation, healthcare organizations are subject to financial penalty when a patient population exhibits excess readmissions. A significant reason for readmission of HF patients is a gap in the transition of care from hospital to home. The purpose of this doctoral project was to develop a practice guideline of best practices for transitioning HF patients from hospital to home. The transitional care model and care transitions intervention provided the theoretical underpinnings for developing this …

Predicting Certification Success For The Family Nurse Practitioner, Tammy Lee Gravel Jan 2018

Predicting Certification Success For The Family Nurse Practitioner, Tammy Lee Gravel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

High-stakes licensure or certification examinations are required for many health professions disciplines to ensure safe entry-level practice. Accrediting agencies set a benchmark for graduates' first-time licensure or certification success as a measure of program effectiveness. Failures of graduates on licensure or certification examinations may directly affect the school's recruitment and retention of qualified students and faculty, as well as institutional financial viability. A health science university has added Health Education System, Inc. (HESI) standardized examinations using computer adaptive testing into the family nurse practitioner (FNP) master's program to support certification success, although research on these advanced practice examinations as related …

Assessing Nurses' Safety Attitudes In Preventing Clabsi, Seraphine Ikwueme Jan 2018

Assessing Nurses' Safety Attitudes In Preventing Clabsi, Seraphine Ikwueme

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) has been widely studied because of its impact on patient morbidity, mortality, and overall health care costs. Research has shown that nurses' attitudes and perceptions regarding safety are critical to developing and maintaining clinical environments that are safe, prevent CLABSI, and assure better health outcomes. The practice-focused question for this project sought to determine the safety attitudes exhibited by registered nurses on a medical-surgical unit at the practice site. The Stetler model was used as a framework to guide the study. The Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ) measured attitudes and perceptions regarding teamwork, safety, job satisfaction, …

Nursing Faculty's Integration Of Quality And Safety Competencies As A Curricular Framework, Florianne Mereigh-Frederick

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The call to better prepare nurses in safety and quality performance resulted from the concern of the Institute of Medicine regarding egregious gaps and errors in U.S. hospitals that resulted in serious injuries and patient deaths. Quality and safety education for nursing (QSEN) competencies were set forth in 2005 to enhance nursing curricula and nursing students' preparation for practice; however, QSEN's integration and implementation have been gradual and inconsistent. This qualitative interpretive study was guided by Senge's principles of the learning organization and Benner's professional development model. Using face-to-face interviews, the perspectives of 9 full-time nursing faculty members at 2 …

A Case Study Of Overcrowding In A County Jail In The Southeast United States, Marquice Robinson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

For the past several decades, the county jail in a large metropolitan city in the southeast United States has been overcrowded, which has resulted in violence within the jail, excessive costs to the Sheriff's Office, and a requirement of Federal oversight of the jail from 2005 to 2015. In spite of these events, little is understood about why jail overcrowding is prevalent in the county and what impacts overcrowding may have on the communities around the jail. Motivation Strategies For Improving Consistency In Live-Entertainment Employees' Performances, Anthony G. Ricotta

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The lack of discrete motivation strategies to improve the consistency of employees' performances was the problem that instigated this research. The purpose of this single-case study was to explore the motivation strategies live-entertainment artistic directors (ADs) use to improve consistency in the artists' performances. Data were collected within an international live-entertainment company to uncover whether artists self-determined the approach to improving consistency in performance or whether consistency occurred from strategies developed by the ADs. Data were collected from face-to-face interviews with ADs and senior ADs and performance evaluations of employees, and then analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana's data analysis …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The cost of healthcare in the United States has increased due to growing numbers of patients who live with chronic health problems, such as heart disease. The cost of healthcare is compounded by the cost in terms of complications of cardiovascular disease secondary to medication non-adherence. Education about medication use and adherence, safety, and side effects was needed for patients in a cardiovascular unit to improve adherence to medications as prescribed. Results of a health care provider (HCP) and nursing staff needs assessment provided by the site showed the need for improved cardiovascular medication education. Guided by Bandura's social cognitive theory, the purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the relationship between clinical experience within a nursing program and the reported clinical self-efficacy of BSN students in the sophomore, junior, and senior …

Effects Of Cinema On Juror Decision Making, Jededia Higgins Jan 2018

Effects Of Cinema On Juror Decision Making, Jededia Higgins

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Previous research has demonstrated how different forms of media, such as news, television, and music, can affect an individual's perceptions and attitudes. However, little research exists on how these effects may have an impact in the courtroom beyond pre-trial publicity. This could pose a threat to the constitutional right of a fair trial; and understanding this threat may be vital to impartiality in the trial process. Using cultivation theory and the CSI effect as a theoretical basis, this study examined how attitudes toward, and perceptions about, mock trial vignettes were affected by exposure to entertainment media in the form of …

While current psychological theory and research suggest conceptual associations between bullying and behavioral disorders, there is a gap in the literature examining such relationships. Although contemporary theories of aggression describe emotional, social, and cognitive risk factors that are common both, associations between bully-victim patterns and ODD have not been studied to date. This exploratory study addressed this gap by surveying 27 teachers to assess their reports of aggressive behaviors and socioemotional patterns of 58 male middle school students who were identified through school investigations as involved in bullying incidents. Between-group differences for students classified as bullies, victims, or bully-victims were …
