Integrated Periphyton Biofilters In Marine Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, Adam N. Bell Nov 2023

Integrated Periphyton Biofilters In Marine Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, Adam N. Bell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Marine aquaculture is a growing industry that has the potential to reduce eutrophication, overfishing, and loss of biodiversity. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are a type of aquaculture system that decreases discharge, raises biological control, and conserves water; however, RAS are challenged due to high energy cost, low biodiversity, water quality control, and waste nutrients. Periphyton biofilters are a new technology that allows for feed production, water quality control, microbial diversity, and resource recovery in marine aquaculture systems. The overarching question that this dissertation investigates is, how can periphyton biofilters be integrated into RAS to address the challenges of modern sustainable …

Brain Metastasis-Associated Fibroblasts Secrete Fucosylated Pvr/Cd155 That Induces Breast Cancer Invasion, Emma Adhikari Nov 2023

Brain Metastasis-Associated Fibroblasts Secrete Fucosylated Pvr/Cd155 That Induces Breast Cancer Invasion, Emma Adhikari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer (BC) continues to be the most diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide. High mortality, in most cancers, is due to metastasis; BC is the most common source of one of the deadliest forms of metastasis–brain metastasis (BM) in female. Patients with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) exhibit the highest incidence of BM and poorest survival outcomes upon diagnosis with BM. The prognosis of breast cancer brain metastasis (BCBM) remains poor because the blood–brain barrier (BBB) prevents the uptake of drug substances, including chemotherapeutic agents, targeted agents, and toxins, from the brain. …

“I Was Doing The Best With What I Had”: Exploring Student Veterans’ Experiences With Community Reintegration, Food Insecurity, And Health Challenges, Jacquelyn N. Heuer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Food insecurity is a concern for many populations, including college students and military veterans. The impacts of food insecurity on student veterans are understudied, especially in relation to community reintegration and health. Employing the theoretical frameworks of structural violence and embodiment, this dissertation explores how community reintegration, food insecurity, diet quality, and health interact and influence one another among post-9/11 student veterans in Florida. In doing so, this dissertation considers how the experiences of student veterans are shaped by social inequities (i.e., structural violence) and how these experiences become embodied, thereby shaping student veterans’ health outcomes.

Utilizing findings from surveys …

Deep Learning-Based Automatic Stereology For High- And Low-Magnification Images, Hunter Morera Oct 2023

Deep Learning-Based Automatic Stereology For High- And Low-Magnification Images, Hunter Morera

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quantification of the true number of stained cells in specific brain regions is an important metric in many fields of biomedical research involving cell degeneration, cytotoxicology, cellular inflammation, and drug development for a wide range of neurological disorders and mental illnesses. Unbiased stereology is the current state-of-the-art method for collecting the cell count data from tissue sections. These studies require trained experts to manually focus through a z-stack of microscopy images and count (click) on a hundred or more cells per case, making this approach time consuming (~1 hour per case) and prone to human error (i.e., inter-rater variability). Thus, …

I focus on the /r/bropill which is hosted on Reddit – home to thousands of active discussion forums called subreddits. I argue that the members of /r/bropill subreddit are attempting to redefine what it means to live your life not only as a man but as a “good man.” Using a purposive sample, I analyzed 24 discussions which totaled 1325 posts (n = 1325). I conducted a qualitative textual analysis of the original posts and comments inspired by grounded theory. My findings reveal …

Neuroendocrine Regulation Of Chemokine Receptor-Mediated Leukocyte Migration Via Heteromeric G Protein-Coupled Receptor Complexes, Garrett Enten Oct 2023

Neuroendocrine Regulation Of Chemokine Receptor-Mediated Leukocyte Migration Via Heteromeric G Protein-Coupled Receptor Complexes, Garrett Enten

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Neuroendocrine regulation of the innate immune system is a well-documentedphenomenon. The underlying mechanisms, however, are not well understood. Here we show that at least 20 members of the human chemokine receptor (CR) family heteromerize with one or more members of the α1-adrenergic receptor (AR) family and that all CRs, apart from CXCR1, heteromerize with arginine vasopressin receptor 1A (AVPR1A) in recombinant systems. These heteromeric complexes are detectable in human monocytes and the monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1. Though currently technical limitations prevent the direct visualization of endogenously expressed higher-order hetero-oligomeric receptor complexes, we provide evidence through functional analysis and proximity-based …

Red Mangrove (Rhizophora Mangle) Recruitment And Retention Dynamics On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Reefs In A Subtropical Estuary, Noreen Selma Mathews Oct 2023

Red Mangrove (Rhizophora Mangle) Recruitment And Retention Dynamics On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Reefs In A Subtropical Estuary, Noreen Selma Mathews

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mangroves are invading oyster reefs in areas no longer impacted by winter freezes and completely transforming them into mangrove islands. The mechanisms influencing the transition between these two habitat states remain unclear. Here, I test experimentally whether oyster reef (Crassostrea virginica) structure directly facilitates red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) propagule capture via differences in propagule retention and successful mangrove establishment. In addition to oyster reef structure, I compared physical reef features of size, elevation, and wind-wave exposure to uncover whether these traits influenced mangrove retention. Recently- abscised red mangrove propagules were inserted onto 21 oyster reefs across 5 sites in Tampa …

Wastewater Treatment Using Encapsulated Chabazite In Polyvinyl Alcohol-Sodium Alginate Hydrogel Biofilm Carriers, Susieanna Nevada Persaud Oct 2023

Wastewater Treatment Using Encapsulated Chabazite In Polyvinyl Alcohol-Sodium Alginate Hydrogel Biofilm Carriers, Susieanna Nevada Persaud

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen discharge from wastewater is a global issue and with increased urbanization as well as industrialization, it has become even more essential to develop more efficient wastewater treatment systems. The dominant form of nitrogen in wastewater is ammonium. Biological oxidation of ammonium to nitrite and nitrate is the first step in biological nitrogen removal processes. If left untreated, nitrogen can cause toxicity to aquatic life, unsafe changes in water quality, and eutrophication.

Biofilm carriers can help to improve the efficiency of traditional activated sludge wastewater treatment systems by reducing operating costs and reducing hydraulic retention time. Biofilm carriers also promote …

Labile Dissolved Nickel (Ni) Concentrations In The North Pacific, Calyn M. Crawford Oct 2023

Labile Dissolved Nickel (Ni) Concentrations In The North Pacific, Calyn M. Crawford

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nickel (Ni) is an important micronutrient for phytoplankton and bacteria that serves as a required co-factor in several metalloenzymes. Despite these known biological uses, total dissolved Ni concentrations remain elevated in global surface waters, in contrast to the surface depletion commonly observed for macronutrients and other nutrient-type trace elements. A prevailing hypothesis for the muted depletion of dissolved Ni concentrations in surface waters is that dissolved Ni in seawater is not in a bioavailable form. The chemical lability of Ni in seawater provides insight into Ni speciation and bioavailability, but few measurements have been made in the open ocean to …

Time-Series Analysis Of Coral Reef And Reef-Fish Biodiversity In The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Cara L. Estes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The general decline in coral-reef ecosystem health throughout the Caribbean between the 1970’s and late 1990’s seems to have slowed down or stopped, with only slight decreases in coral reef cover observed in the 2000’s through 2019. The earlier decline can be attributed to many different local and regional stressors that have acted together, and include naturally occurring (hurricanes, diseases) and anthropogenic pressures (increased sedimentation, fishing). These ecosystems provide a range of services to people, including food and protection from storms, with an annual benefit of billions of dollars. This has driven a desire to better understand these ecosystems. The …

Discovery Of Small-Molecule Inhibitors For The Β-Catenin/B-Cell Lymphoma 9 Protein-Protein Interaction., Zilu Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is associated with activating genes that support cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival. Excessive activation of Wnt/β‐catenin signaling has been associated with development of several types of cancer and activation of stem-like cancer cells. Direct targeting of β‐catenin, the central hub in this signaling pathway, is a promising strategy to suppress the hyperactive β‐catenin signaling but has proven to be highlychallenging. Substantial efforts have been made to discover compounds that bind with β‐catenin, block β‐catenin mediated protein–protein interactions (PPIs) and suppress β‐catenin signaling. β‐catenin/BCL9 PPI has a smaller contacting area (1450 Å2) and a moderate binding affinity …

Regulated Intramembrane Proteolysis By M82 Peptidases: The Role Of Prss In The Staphylococcus Aureus Stress Response, Baylie M. Schott

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a major threat to human health, which is only exacerbated by its resistance to methicillin and other frontline antibiotics. Consequently, annual hospitalizations resulting from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been recorded in the hundreds of thousands for decades. However, the global impact of this opportunistic pathogen cannot solely be attributed to its antibiotic resistance, as S. aureus is also an expert at adapting to host conditions and responding to external stress. Here we attempt to gain a better understanding of a S. aureus factor that aids in circumventing such external insult - PrsS - a membrane protease …

3d Musculoskeletal Analysis Of The Rhea Americana Forelimb And Implications For The Evolution Of Avian Flight, Sarah Elizabeth Guzinski Oct 2023

3d Musculoskeletal Analysis Of The Rhea Americana Forelimb And Implications For The Evolution Of Avian Flight, Sarah Elizabeth Guzinski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To understand the evolutionary gain, and loss, of avian powered flight, attention must be paid to the wing morphology of species across these transitions. However, paleognaths, while being the most well-known flightless birds, have greatly understudied forelimbs. Additionally, current literature regarding their forelimb anatomy generally lacks a three-dimensional (3D), biomechanical approach. Among the flightless paleognaths, the rhea is notable in having the least reduced forelimb. Though not used for flight, the wings of rheas are used in other behaviors such as courtship and threat display, as well as nest defense. In this study, I investigate the forelimb anatomy of an …

Stable Isotope Analysis On Yellowfin And Blackfin Tuna Eye Lenses Reveals Life History Patterns In The Gulf Of Mexico, Kylee M. Rullo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Spatial geography, ontogenetic movement, and trophic patterns of mobile species are key elements of effective marine resource management. A number of methods are currently available for tracking movements of pelagic migratory species, including the use of conventional and electronic tags. However, tagging campaigns can take years to provide useful data, can be expensive, and only capture a portion of a fish’s lifetime. For this project, I used stable-isotopic ratios of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) in metabolically inert, chronologically-layered fish-eye lenses to explore lifetime movement and trophic patterns of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) in the …

Developing A Point-Of-Care Detection Kit For Parkinson’S Disease Using Gold Nanoparticle-Based Lateral Flow Assay, Ali Aljassabi Oct 2023

Developing A Point-Of-Care Detection Kit For Parkinson’S Disease Using Gold Nanoparticle-Based Lateral Flow Assay, Ali Aljassabi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease and the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disorder in the world. The major issue with PD is that it takes several years of biological changes until the patient starts to experience physiological symptoms that could affect their daily lives. The major hallmark of PD is the appearance of Lewy body inclusions in the neuron’s cytoplasm, which is rich in a protein called α-Synuclein (α-Syn). Several studies have shown that the levels of α-Syn in blood increase because the excess α-Syn is released from neurons into the bloodstream through extracellular vesicles. …

Spatial Structure Of Germination And Seed-Associated Fungi In Tropical Pioneer Seeds, Daniela Varon Garcia Oct 2023

Spatial Structure Of Germination And Seed-Associated Fungi In Tropical Pioneer Seeds, Daniela Varon Garcia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Negative density-dependent regulation is the process by which host-specific natural enemies reduce the survival of seeds and seedlings of conspecifics near adult trees, favoring heterospecific recruitment, and ultimately increasing local diversity. Negative density-dependent regulation by fungal pathogens has been consistently reported to promote plant diversity in the tropics, even though they tend to be multi-host and host-specificity is rarely reported. Nevertheless, evidence suggests that host-generalist fungi can have host-specific effects that produce disproportionate negative effects on some plant species but not others, promoting regional diversity. However, such studies have not tested for both host-specificity and distance-dependent effects in fully replicated …
