An Examination Of Parental Coping Strategies During Catastophic Events, Vivian K. Mills
An Examination Of Parental Coping Strategies During Catastophic Events, Vivian K. Mills
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
On March 11, 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Sars CoV-2 a global pandemic. The virus that originated in Wuhan, China, had spread to several other countries causing governments to shut down and issue safety mandates to slow and stop the spread. The pandemic caused global changes to normal routines and highlighted the importance of coping during these tough times. Although the global COVID-19 pandemic encompassed much of the news during the past few years, it is not an isolated catastrophic event to have impacted society. Natural disasters, such as hurricanes and wildfires, wars, and other disasters have …
Farmer Adoption Of Advanced Technology In Agribusiness, Justin W. Belcher
Farmer Adoption Of Advanced Technology In Agribusiness, Justin W. Belcher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Normally, family-owned farms are slow to adopt advanced technologies though these technologies can provide several benefits to the farm and have the potential to increase farm production volumes to help meet future population growth. The goal of this study was to document the factors that influence the adoption decision of advanced technologies by family-owned farms and what strategies can be used to motivate adoption. Case study research was conducted to gather data in a more structured way from family-owned farms typically excluded from past research for the purpose of comparing similarities across similar and dissimilar farms. For generalizing similarities, a …
Surviving A Broken System: Synergies Between Solidarity Economies And Sustainable Development Goals, Julie Beach
Surviving A Broken System: Synergies Between Solidarity Economies And Sustainable Development Goals, Julie Beach
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Capitalism has created problems including wealth polarization, rapid depletion of natural resources, and pervasive systemic societal issues. Hard work is not enough to solve the unequal distribution and barriers preventing access to necessities. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were created to remedy the harsh reality of global inequities and negative environmental impacts by working towards a more just and equitable future for all. Solidarity Economies (SE) offer an alternative framework to achieve these goals.
This research used multiple qualitative methods to investigate the synergies between SE and SDGs in a growing urban environment. St. Petersburg, FL struggles with affordable housing, food …
Towards Precision Audiology: Perceptual Profiles & Their Relation To Ecologically Valid Communication Assessments, Dana Cherri
Towards Precision Audiology: Perceptual Profiles & Their Relation To Ecologically Valid Communication Assessments, Dana Cherri
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Living in a sonic world, a person with hearing loss experiences difficulty in communicating with others. One of the reasons why some people with hearing loss do not wear hearing aids (HAs) is limited perceived benefit, which may result from HAs that are not fit using “best practices” or because the best practices fail to address individual difficulties experienced by the listener. The typical audiogram provides information regarding audibility as a function of frequency and is used to establish degree, type, and configuration of hearing loss, but does not measure the ability of an individual to process various components of …
The Impact Of Critical Illness Insurance Among Older Adults In China, Jiaosi Li
The Impact Of Critical Illness Insurance Among Older Adults In China, Jiaosi Li
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although China has made considerable progress towards universal health insurance coverage, high out-of-pocket medical expenditures due to catastrophic illnesses (e.g., cancer, heart attack, or stroke) remain a concern. To address this concern, the Critical Illness Insurance (CII) program providing additional coverage for high medical expenditures was introduced in 2012. We combine data on the timing of CII implementation across prefecture cities in China with the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to examine its impact on medical expenditures, inpatient utilization, health outcomes, household consumption and savings. To account for the staggered implementation across regions, we employ the Difference-in-Differences (DiD) …
Development Of An Automated Platform For Sensing And Differentiating Vapor-Phase Btex Constituents, Jonathan Samuelson
Development Of An Automated Platform For Sensing And Differentiating Vapor-Phase Btex Constituents, Jonathan Samuelson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Light aromatic hydrocarbons are an inevitable byproduct of fossil fuel extraction, refinement, distribution, and use. The four lightest and most prevalent of these are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, which are known collectively as BTEX. In spite of their chemical similarity these species have markedly different effects on human health and substantially different concentrations are permitted by OSHA in workplaces and by the EPA in ambient air and groundwater. Real-time detection, identification, and quantification of these species is therefore of great importance wherever they see industrial use. This work represents the continuation and advancement of a line of research in which …

An Anthropology With Human Waste Management: Non-Humans, The State, And Matters Of Care On The Placencia Peninsula, Belize, William Alex Webb
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The management of human waste is a seldom studied phenomenon in anthropology. Yet across the globe, in countries both rich and poor, it presents pervasive and difficult to tame problems. This dissertation draws on complimentary theories of management and entanglements to explore the practices and processes of organizing human waste on the Placencia Peninsula, Belize. The results illustrate how problems are conditioned and defined by messy relations between institutions, people, technologies, materials, and ecological life.
Fieldwork and analysis for this work was a culmination of years of interdisciplinary collaboration between other anthropologists and engineers at the University of South Florida. …
Anthropogenic Fecal Pollution Affects Microbial Water Quality And Multidrug Resistance In Tropical Aquatic Environments, Adriana González-Fernández
Anthropogenic Fecal Pollution Affects Microbial Water Quality And Multidrug Resistance In Tropical Aquatic Environments, Adriana González-Fernández
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although an often-overlooked issue, fecal pollution at recreational beaches should concerneveryone. Worldwide more than 80% of wastewater is discharged into rivers or the ocean without any treatment. Untreated and inefficiently treated wastewater can introduce diseasecausing microorganisms into the aquatic environment. Fecal-borne pathogens can also originate in animal waste, and humans can be exposed to these pathogens from poorly managed animal feces that make their way into the aquatic environment. Exposure to waterborne pathogens in recreational waters is a public health hazard, as it facilitates the transmission of waterborne illness, and surface waters serve as natural reservoirs of antibiotic resistant bacteria …
Interaction Of Sequentially Applied Interventions For Gait Symmetry, Adila Hoque
Interaction Of Sequentially Applied Interventions For Gait Symmetry, Adila Hoque
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
More than 50% of stroke survivors over 65 years of age experience long-term mobilityloss [50]. Hemiparesis is a form of disability that arises from this, causing paralysis on one side of the body. The long-term effects of hemiparesis include loss of locomotion, muscle spasticity, and excessive use of muscles on the non-paretic side. This leads to a gait pattern that is kinematically and kinetically asymmetric.
Several rehabilitation techniques currently exist that aim to minimize this asymmetric gait, including split-belt treadmill training, rhythmic cueing (auditory or tactile), adding mass to one foot. Each form of treatment comes with its unique strengths …

Minecraft In Language Teacher Education: Acceptance And Integration In Practice, Kristen E. Fung
Minecraft In Language Teacher Education: Acceptance And Integration In Practice, Kristen E. Fung
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In today’s technological era, understanding if and how teachers’ acceptance and integration of technology evolves is critical to understanding their needs. Technology creates complicated demands on educators and research shows various factors may contribute to their limited success at integrating it (Bustos & Nussbaum, 2009). Research also shows that teachers’ perceptions and attitudes towards pedagogical innovations and information and communication technologies are prominent factors that impact adoption and integration (Tejedor & Muñoz-Repiso, 2006), and the perceptions teachers develop as pre-service teachers influence their classroom performance as in-service teachers (Moon et al., 2016). While research shows plentiful evidence of the educational …

Generative Spatio-Temporal And Multimodal Analysis Of Neonatal Pain, Md Sirajus Salekin
Generative Spatio-Temporal And Multimodal Analysis Of Neonatal Pain, Md Sirajus Salekin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Neonates can not express their pain like an adult person. Due to the lacking of proper muscle growth and inability to express non-verbally, it is difficult to understand their emotional status. In addition, if the neonates are under any treatment or left monitored after any major surgeries (post-operative), it is more difficult to understand their pain due to the side effect of medications and the caring system (i.e. intubated, masked face, covered body with blanket, etc.). In a clinical environment, usually, bedside nurses routinely observe the neonate and measure the pain status following any standard clinical pain scale. But current …
Integrating Psychopathy Into Prominent Developmental/Life-Course Theories, Eva M. Fontaine
Integrating Psychopathy Into Prominent Developmental/Life-Course Theories, Eva M. Fontaine
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite empirical research identifying psychopathy as one of the most robust predictors of criminal behavior, calls to integrate psychopathy into criminological theory have largely been unrequited. Within criminological theory, the construct of psychopathy has been proposed to best fit in the developmental/life-course (DLC) paradigm. As such, the purpose of this dissertation was to explore the theoretical integration of into psychopathy into three DLC theories: (1) Moffitt’s (1993) Dual Taxonomy, (2) Gottfredson & Hirschi’s (1990) General Theory of Crime, and (3) DeLisi’s (2009) Unified Theory of Crime. In doing so, the three studies in this dissertation employed the Pathways to Desistance …
Beyond Health And Animal Rights: A Study In Black Veganism, Wendy J. Rib
Beyond Health And Animal Rights: A Study In Black Veganism, Wendy J. Rib
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Veganism, or the avoidance of animal products, has been recognized by nutritionists and food scientists as a lifestyle choice associated with good health and lower prevalence of diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and heart disease. However, the choice to eschew all animal products is frequently more than just a diet. Many people practice veganism as part of a larger reformative social movement, seeking permanent change in food structures, advancing policies in animal welfare and transforming their everyday lives in the quest for cultural acceptance. Although the number of people who identify as vegans appears to be growing, it is often assumed that …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lymphoma, especially non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), is among the most common categories of cancer in the United States (National Cancer Institute [NCI], 2019). The survival rate for lymphoma has significantly improved over the last few decades due to advances in therapy. However, despite these advances, lymphoma patients experience many negative consequences of cancer treatment, including sexual dysfunction (NCI, 2021b). The purpose of this mixed methods pilot study was to explore the presence and experiences of sexual dysfunction and related sexual distress in both male and female lymphoma patients during cancer treatment. A concurrent triangulated design was used to: 1) evaluate the …
Longitudinal Associations Among Life Values, Alcohol Use, And Alcohol Abuse Symptoms From Adolescence To Adulthood, Connor Habecker
Longitudinal Associations Among Life Values, Alcohol Use, And Alcohol Abuse Symptoms From Adolescence To Adulthood, Connor Habecker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Investigating life value trends, the pro-social and anti-social characteristics that play a role in decision making, is an understudied field in adolescents. In addressing adolescent alcohol consumption as a public health concern, life values may provide needed background in understanding and influencing adolescent behavior toward pro-social values and away from known risk factors, such as alcohol consumption. By modeling life value trends of adolescents and the associations between each life value and the outcomes of alcohol use and alcohol abuse, there may be primordial level intervention opportunities as opposed to the current, largely ineffective, tertiary level interventions. This thesis utilizes …

African American Males' Perception Of Factors That Contribute To Success In Higher Education, Gary D. Oliver
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decades, many studies have concluded that African American students' college completion rate and success lag far behind other students attending college in the United States (The JBHE Foundation, Inc., 2006). More specifically, these studies have confirmed that African American male students' success rates remain disproportionally low compared to other ethnic male groups. Unfortunately, few notable studies identifying African American males achieving higher education or completing their academic pursuits have been presented as part of the Black male student narrative.
This study aimed to understand better the resources and experiences that positively affect African American males who completed …
Assessment And Prevention Of Bacterial Regrowth In Stored Household Water In Eastern Coastal Madagascar, Lauren Judah
Assessment And Prevention Of Bacterial Regrowth In Stored Household Water In Eastern Coastal Madagascar, Lauren Judah
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As of 2020, diarrheal diseases were the leading cause of death in Madagascar. A major cause of diarrheal illness is contaminated water, and one crucial aspect of preventing contaminated water is safe household storage. Bacterial regrowth between point-of-collection and household storage has been well established in literature. A frequently implicated source of regrowth is the storage container’s biofilm, which is a community of varying bacteria enclosed in a “slimy” extracellular polymeric substance that forms on surfaces in wet environments and anchors bacteria to those surfaces. The overall goal of this thesis was to quantify and control bacterial regrowth in household …

However, members all share in common a passion for social justice issues. This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the identity of Christian Left individuals through a thematic analysis of interviews. By interrogating participants’ identity …
Utilizing Maternal Investment Strategies Of Sharks To Develop Management Tools To Aid In Shark Conservation, Dennis Deeken
Utilizing Maternal Investment Strategies Of Sharks To Develop Management Tools To Aid In Shark Conservation, Dennis Deeken
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Every generation, breeding females and males repopulate ecosystems with the next generation of offspring. Two models link maternal investments in offspring size and number to natural selection processes. In unstable resource environments, bet-hedging models predict a conservative tradeoff in maternal investments resulting in moderate egg size and clutch size within a given range of sizes for a given species. r/K selection models make predictions on maternal investments across species. In unstable resource environments, r-selected species invest in large broods of small offspring. In stable environments, K-selected species invest in small broods of large offspring. The maternal risk management model predicts …

Communicating Breast Cancer Awareness: Using The Health Belief Model To Develop Mass Communication Themes To Influence Early Detection Behaviors, Srisai Kamakshi Ramya Harika Pucha
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer (BC) is the most fatal cancer in India and has affected more than 1.3 million people in the year 2020 alone, making it a national public health priority. The reason for this alarming increase in BC incidences and mortality rates stems from a severe lack of awareness and the absence of targeted interventions. Considering the absence of a national level breast cancer awareness program, the following study sought to understand Indian women’s preconceived notions about the disease and the available screening methods to contribute to future mass communication campaigns in India. The study used a pre-designed interview guide …
To Be Or Not To Be: A Tale Of Staphylococcal Gpsb, Lauren R. Hammond
To Be Or Not To Be: A Tale Of Staphylococcal Gpsb, Lauren R. Hammond
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are two big drivers motivating studies into bacterial cell division. The first is a desire to understand life around us. One of the defining characteristics of life is the ability for a cell to grow and divide, and without in-depth knowledge of this process, we cannot truly understand the complexities that allow for life on this planet. The second motivator is to identify new drug targets in the ongoing fight against antimicrobial resistance. Many infectious organisms have become resistant to commonly used antibiotics, and the bacterial cell division machinery is a largely untapped essential process with many potential therapeutic …
Exploring The Vulnerability Of A Neural Tangent Generalization Attack (Ntga) - Generated Unlearnable Cifar-10 Dataset, Gitte Ost
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nowadays, a massive amount of data is generated and stored on servers and cloudsfrom various applications daily. Preventing these data from unauthorized use often becomes necessary and critical in various real-world applications. Many researchers have studied this crucial problem and developed different methods for this purpose. Among them, Neural Tangent Generalization Attack (NTGA) is one of the most efficient methods to make a dataset unlearnable, which means that the dataset is not learnable by machine learning/deep learning methods. That is, the NTGA-generated dataset is protected against unauthorized use. In this thesis, we explore the vulnerability of an NTGA-generated unlearnable CIFAR-10 …
