Breaking The Glass Ceiling In Higher Education: Latina Administrators Overcoming The Invisible Barriers To Succeed In Medical Schools, Ana J. Bonifacio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, one in four girls attending K-12 is a Latina (Gándara, 2015). However, Latinas only make up 2% of all higher education administrators (Pritchard et al., 2019). Although the Latina population and medical school enrollment have increased in the past three decades, graduation rates have declined while the percentage of Latina administrators has remained stagnant for the past fifteen years. Consequently, this study aimed to examine the experiences of eight successful Latina administrators from various medical schools. A qualitative research study design was used with a narrative inquiry approach to explore the experiences of Latina administrators in …

Effect Of Hyperoxia On Cardiac Pathophysiology In Female Guinea Pig Hearts, Chayapatou Chayawatto
Effect Of Hyperoxia On Cardiac Pathophysiology In Female Guinea Pig Hearts, Chayapatou Chayawatto
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hyperoxia is widely implemented in critical care and ICU patients. The administration of a high concentration of inspired oxygen to the lung can unknowingly cause hyperoxia and thereby damaging the lungs and heart due to oxidative stress. Technically, hyperoxia occurs when the patient receives PaO2 > 200 mmHg. Major research focused on hyperoxia-induced lung injury, but nothing is known on its effect on heart. Our lab is the pioneer in understanding the effect of hyperoxia on cardiovascular remodeling using mice model. Previous results show that mice under 72 hours of hyperoxia present severe cardiac pathophysiology. This research uses Guinea pigs, which …
Impact Of Language Sampling Context On Language Productivity And Complexity, Trina J. Tolentino
Impact Of Language Sampling Context On Language Productivity And Complexity, Trina J. Tolentino
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Language sampling is a familiar tool in the speech-language pathologist’s (SLP’s) repertoire, used to assess a student’s language ability and inform treatment targets. The current literature has several studies comparing various dimensions of language sampling context, but with relatively small samples. The goal of this study was to identify what sampling contexts elicit the most productive and complex language, thereby contributing insight into what conditions may yield the most accurate representation of a child’s language skill, as well as the resulting intervention focus.
One-thousand thirty-seven kindergarten, first-, second-, and third-grade students (mean age [years; months] ≈ 7;5; range = 5;0-10;9), …
Interactions Between Juvenile Estuary-Dependent Fishes And Microalgal Dynamics, Ian C. Williams
Interactions Between Juvenile Estuary-Dependent Fishes And Microalgal Dynamics, Ian C. Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The ontogenetic movement of juvenile estuary-dependent fishes upstream in estuarine settings is a phenomenon observed around the world. These movements usually coincide with a shift in diet from smaller prey, such as calanoid copepods, to larger prey, such as mysids. However, the mechanism that drives this pattern has yet to be conclusively described. Prior to the current study, zooplankton/hyperbenthos (“zooplankton”), primary production, and water quality data were collected from the Caloosahatchee River estuary in two concurrent and coordinated studies over a two-year period. One of the products of these sampling efforts was a classification of primary-producer types at the sediment-water …
Evaluation Of Response Modality In Online Discussion Boards, Tatiyanna A. Dunn
Evaluation Of Response Modality In Online Discussion Boards, Tatiyanna A. Dunn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since 2020, over 3 million students have enrolled in a postsecondary distance learning course (National Center for Education Statistics, 2020). One challenge in distant learning is fostering student engagement. Student engagement is a broad construct that refers to increasing contact between three pillars of education. Students, teachers, and course material. Past research has shown increasing engagement leads to improved student performance and instructor evaluations. Unsurprisingly, promoting student engagement is desirable for both students and instructors (Cobb, 2009). Discussion boards allow student engagement between themselves and Instructors while knowledge can still be tested. Few studies have evaluated the modality of student …
Exploring Parenthood And The Influence Of Lived Experiences On Parenting Behaviors Among Child Welfare-Involved Adults, Veronica Howell
Exploring Parenthood And The Influence Of Lived Experiences On Parenting Behaviors Among Child Welfare-Involved Adults, Veronica Howell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The World Health Organization asserts the healthy development of children is essential. Cases of violence and maltreatment impede the development of children worldwide. Six in 10 adults in the general US population have reported at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE), while vulnerable populations, including child welfare-involved adults (i.e., parents and caregivers), often report more. This history is associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates alongside higher economic costs; therefore, preventing ACEs and promoting safe, stable, and nurturing relationships between parents and children is critical. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to understand the meanings and responsibilities associated …

Nonetheless, the MRgRT process flow does suffer from some challenges that limit its clinical usability. The primary aspects of MRgRT workflow are MRI acquisition, tumor delineation, dose map prediction and administering treatment. It is estimated that the acquisition of MRI takes around …
An Object For Sexual Pleasure: Does Viewing Sexualized Media Predict Increases In Self And Partner Objectification Impacting Feelings Of Sexual And Romantic Closeness?, Kaitlyn Ligman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Exposure to sexually objectifying media has been linked to the objectification of the self and of one’s romantic partner (e.g., partner-objectification); yet the implications of this for romantic relationships have remained relatively unexamined. There is, however, reason to suspect that exposure to sexually objectifying media and engaging in objectification may have implications for romantic couples. When a woman frequently monitors her appearance this may undermine her ability to sexually connect with her partner and when a man views his partner as an object for sexual pleasure it may impede his ability to develop intimate feelings of relational closeness to his …
Deceptive Appeals And Cognitive Influences Used In Fraudulent Scheme Sales Pitches, Rafael J. Toledo
Deceptive Appeals And Cognitive Influences Used In Fraudulent Scheme Sales Pitches, Rafael J. Toledo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fraud schemes exploit the complex interplay that results from utilizing deceptive appeals to activate underlying cognitive influences. This study was designed, first, to identify the deceptive appeals present in the messaging of fraudulent schemes and, second, to identify the underlying cognitive influences being exploited by the deceptive appeals utilized. Findings reveal that effectively used deceptive appeals work to keep viewers’ mental processes in a state of cognitive ease. This state allows cognitive influences--such as heuristics, cognitive biases, and the System 1 mind--to remain in control of mental processing; however, System 1 is prone to accept deceptive beliefs. The results of …
Social Media Time Series Forecasting And User-Level Activity Prediction With Gradient Boosting, Deep Learning, And Data Augmentation, Fred Mubang

Queering The Weeki Wachee Mermaid And Its Renewed Aesthetic Value, Jacqueline D. Merveille
Queering The Weeki Wachee Mermaid And Its Renewed Aesthetic Value, Jacqueline D. Merveille
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Scholars have asserted that the visual representation of womanhood responds to a cultural context, which often adheres to patriarchy and the satisfaction of the male gaze. The mediated depiction of the mermaid through time is polysemous and therefore deserves a thorough examination substantiated by robust theories. As a gendered feminine figure that complies with the patriarchal pressure of subjugation to gratify male desire, the mermaid can, however, elude the socially constructed dichotomy of genders, contributing to her agency and queerness. By investigating the Florida roadside attraction of Weeki Wachee Springs’ mermaid shows and other mediated visual depictions of the sea …

Screening Pathological Protein Specific Antibodies As Biomarker Discovery Tools For Neurodegenerative Disease, Yitong Li
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the increase in the average life span, the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases also increases, among which Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the two most common types of neurological disorders. AD and PD share the same pathogenic mechanism that involves a class of proteins called beta-amyloid (Aβ), which, under the induction of some factors, changes from its natural monomeric state to the oligomers containing β-sheet, which is neurotoxic and thus leads to cell damage or apoptosis. This study focused on the selection of antibodies used as biomarkers for AD and PD. The selection of antibodies was based …
A Holistic Investigation Of Acidosis In Breast Cancer, Bryce Ordway
A Holistic Investigation Of Acidosis In Breast Cancer, Bryce Ordway
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the early 20th century, Nobel laureate Otto Warburg made the observation that cells of a carcinoma had considerably higher glycolytic metabolism and considerably lower oxidative metabolism compared to cells of a normal tissue. He postulated that within this observation was the key to deciphering the differences between malignant and normal tissue. It is now well established that tumors of the breast are unequivocally acidic, caused by an abnormal amount of aerobic glycolysis, colloquially known as the Warburg effect. Over the last decades, our group, led by Dr. Robert J. Gillies, has set out to characterize the causes and consequences …

The Impact Of Cannabis On Motivational Processes For Smoked Tobacco And Cigarettes, Claire M. Gorey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cannabis and tobacco are very commonly used across the United States. Given the high prevalence of their dual use, an important health consequence of cannabis is its impact on tobacco usage rates. After all, cigarettes are a leading cause of death in the United States. Theoretical models of drug abuse suggest that cannabis cues and intoxication may be responsible for enhanced smoked tobacco/cigarette motivation. Therefore, the present research sought to assess these routes via two studies. In study 1 (validation & cross-drug cue effects), researchers validated a set of realistic cannabis images among a sample of participants residing in the …

Gender Differences In College Drinkers: The Role Of Masculine Norms, Jared A. Davis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Drinking among college students has remained a prominent problem within the United States, with more than 50% of college students drinking alcohol, 30% considered binge drinkers, and 9% considered heavy drinkers (SAMHSA, 2018). Evidence also shows that males are more likely to partake in risky drinking behaviors (e.g., binge drinking or drinking to intoxication) and are at higher risk to be diagnosed with a alcohol use disorder when compared to women (Iwamoto et al. 2014; Grant et al., 2004). Recent findings suggest that adherence to particular masculine norms as a risk factor for problematic alcohol use among men (Mahalik, 2000; …
