The Effects Of Non-Surgical Interventions On Osteoarthritis-Like Changes In The Mouse Knee, Wendy K. Anemaet
The Effects Of Non-Surgical Interventions On Osteoarthritis-Like Changes In The Mouse Knee, Wendy K. Anemaet
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating condition affecting over 21 million persons in the United States. This number is expected to rise in the coming decades. Treatment approaches for OA focus on symptom modifying measures (i.e., pain relief) as disease modifying interventions do not currently exist. However, some of the interventions used to alleviate the symptoms of OA are also thought to have disease-modifying benefits. Two such non-surgical interventions for OA are intra-articular hyaluronan (HA) injections and physical exercise. In order to effectively study their effects in human OA, animal models that are amenable for studying intervention outcomes are needed.

Brevetoxin Body Burdens In Seabirds Of Southwest Florida, Karen E. Atwood
Brevetoxin Body Burdens In Seabirds Of Southwest Florida, Karen E. Atwood
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Harmful algal blooms (HABs, or "red tides") of the brevetoxin-producing dinoflagellate Karenia brevis occur periodically along Florida's Gulf coast. Mass mortalities of marine birds have long been associated with these blooms, yet there are few data documenting the accumulation of brevetoxins (PbTx) in the tissues of birds.
Post-mortem evaluations were performed on 185 birds representing 22 species collected from October 2001 through May 2006 during red tide and non-red tide events to quantify their body burdens of brevetoxins. A variety of tissues and organs were selected for brevetoxin analysis including blood, brain, heart, fat, stomach or gut contents, intestinal contents …
Fashion Advertising, Men’S Magazines, And Sex In Advertising: A Critical-Interpretive Study, Jennifer Ford
Fashion Advertising, Men’S Magazines, And Sex In Advertising: A Critical-Interpretive Study, Jennifer Ford
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines sexualized portrayals of women in fashion advertising found in metro-sexual men's magazines as visual rhetoric. Historically, studies on sexual images of women in advertising have focused on content analyses of these images and how they affect women. This study asks how sexualized imagery of women functions rhetorically as part of a branding message designed to sell products. The exemplar advertisements were chosen specifically for their sexual imagery from an earlier study by the researcher on sexual images of women in fashion advertisements found in men's magazines.
The messages interpreted within the visuals of this study reveal a …
Predator Behavior And Prey Demography In Patchy Habitats, Brian J. Halstead
Predator Behavior And Prey Demography In Patchy Habitats, Brian J. Halstead
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Habitat loss and fragmentation are among the greatest threats to biodiversity, and these threats can be exacerbated or alleviated by the presence of interacting species. The effect of habitat loss and fragmentation on predator-prey systems has received extensive theoretical attention, but empirical studies of these systems yield few clear patterns. I examined the influence of prey abundance and spatial distribution on the foraging ecology and spatial ecology of Masticophis flagellum (Coachwhip) using capture-mark-recapture and radio telemetry techniques. I also examined the influence of saurophagous snake abundance on the survival rate of Sceloporus woodi (Florida Scrub Lizard) populations. Masticophis flagellum positively …
The Drowned Girl, Karen Brown Gonzalez
The Drowned Girl, Karen Brown Gonzalez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Drowned Girl is a novel-in-stories that depicts the lives of eight characters living in a small Connecticut town. This work is one told through varying perspectives. Characters are mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, daughters, sons, and lovers. Their lives intersect physically, and emotionally, and the separate stories reveal the facets and repercussions of events both past and present: the death of a son and brother in a car accident, the life and death of a notorious town figure, the past and tragic future of a young woman, Jules, whose body is found one spring in the Connecticut river. …
Recognition Memory For Emotional Words: An Event Related Potential Study, Catherine C. Balderston
Recognition Memory For Emotional Words: An Event Related Potential Study, Catherine C. Balderston
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Evidence suggests that emotion affects memory often yielding enhanced recall and recognition of stimuli with emotional content. The nature of the relationship between emotion and memory for words has been particularly difficult to parse in part because of the stimulus characteristics. For example, emotional words tend to engender greater levels of physiological and psychological arousal, which have also been shown to enhance memory. Inter item relatedness has also been suggested as playing a part in the observed effects (i.e., emotional words belong to a closed semantic category compared to neutral words and are therefore easier to remember). While the enhancement …
Time Bending: Temporal Malleability And Organizational Response In Crisis Situations, Gary W. Carson
Time Bending: Temporal Malleability And Organizational Response In Crisis Situations, Gary W. Carson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 created a crisis of epic proportions for the airline industry. The attacks, on the heels of the first financial losses in four years, threatened the existence of many airlines. It was incumbent on the CEO to make sense and offer a plan to control the crisis and move forward. There were fewer audiences more attentive to this senemaking activity than the stockholders. On the cusp of the organization, shareholder management is a central job of CEOs in the 21st century. This study focuses on CEO presentations to shareholders for American, Delta and Frontier Airlines before …

The Paleoindian Chipola: A Site Distribution Analysis And Review Of Collector Contributions In The Apalachicola River Valley, Northwest Florida, William D. Tyler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
At the end of the Pleistocene and the beginning of the Holocene, between 12,000 and 10,000 years ago, humans began to spread throughout North America and into many areas of Florida. These first Floridians are known as Paleoindians, and their culture is largely defined by their lithic assemblage, which includes the well known Clovis point. As the Pleistocene ice age came to a close glaciers melted, rivers experienced a drastic increase in water volume and the landmass of Florida began to shrink as the sea level in the Gulf of Mexico rose. This event likely submerged many early Paleoindian sites …
An Electromechanical Synchronization Of Driving Simulator And Adaptive Driving Aide For Training Persons With Disabilities, Rufael Berhane
An Electromechanical Synchronization Of Driving Simulator And Adaptive Driving Aide For Training Persons With Disabilities, Rufael Berhane
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cars have become necessities of our daily life and are especially important to people with disability because they extend their range of activity and allow participation in a social life.
Sometimes driving a normal car is impossible for individuals with severe disability and they require additional driving aide. However, it is dangerous to send these individuals on the road without giving them special training on driving vehicles using an adaptive aide.
Nowadays there are a number of driving simulators that train disabled persons but none of them have joystick-enabled training that controls both steering, gas and break pedal. This necessitates …
Tumor Suppressive Effects Of The Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptor And The Small Gtpase Rhob, Adam E. Carie
Tumor Suppressive Effects Of The Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptor And The Small Gtpase Rhob, Adam E. Carie
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Receptor tyrosine kinases such as ErbB2 contribute greatly to human malignant transformation, but the role that other receptors such as ß2 adrenergic receptor (B2 AR)play in cancer is ill defined. Furthermore, while some GTPases such as Ras and RhoA promote oncogenesis, RhoB has been suggested to have tumor suppressive activity. In this thesis the tumor suppressive activity of ß2 adrenergic receptors through blockade of the Ras/Raf/Mek/Erk pathway is demonstrated. Furthermore, this thesis provides strong evidence in support of a tumor suppressive activity of RhoB, but not RhoA, in delaying EbB2 mammary oncogenesis in a transgenic mouse model.
Chapter 1 describes …
Emotion-Modulated Startle In Major And Minor Depression: The Role Of Mood Severity In Emotion Reactivity, April Taylor-Clift
Emotion-Modulated Startle In Major And Minor Depression: The Role Of Mood Severity In Emotion Reactivity, April Taylor-Clift
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a disorder defined by mood disturbance, but the deficits in emotional reactivity that accompany MDD are not yet fully characterized. Researchers have utilized the emotion-modulated startle paradigm to investigate emotional responding among depressed individuals with mixed results. Inconsistent results may be due in part to the heterogeneity of mood disorders, including variation in mood severity. The current study utilized an emotion-modulated startle procedure with 33 individuals currently experiencing a major depressive episode, 25 individuals currently experiencing a minor depressive episode (mD), and 31 healthy controls. Severity of depression, anxiety, and positive and negative mood states …
Computer-Based Instruction And Remedial Mathematics: A Study Of Student Retention At A Florida Community College, Carol A. Zavarella
Computer-Based Instruction And Remedial Mathematics: A Study Of Student Retention At A Florida Community College, Carol A. Zavarella
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Computer-based instruction including distance learning is fast becoming an integral part of higher education. Much of the current research has found that computer-based instruction is as effective as lecture-based instruction. Despite the wealth of studies that purport that students enrolled in computer-based instruction perform equally well as compared to their lecture-based counterparts, there is a high dropout rate associated with computer-based instruction including distance learning.
The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in students' withdrawal and completion rates in classes delivered via different instructional formats (distance learning, hybrid, or traditional) to determine if student learning style and/or …
Natriuretic Peptides As A Humoral Link Between The Heart And The Gastrointetsinal System, Anteneh Addisu
Natriuretic Peptides As A Humoral Link Between The Heart And The Gastrointetsinal System, Anteneh Addisu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Natriuretic peptides are a family of hormones released by several different tissues and exert various physiological functions by coupling with cell surface receptors and increasing intracellular cyclic gyanylyl monophosphate (cGMP). Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) and B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) are released in response to mechanical stretch of the atrial or ventricular myocardium, respectively and their plasma level is markedly elevated during myocardial infarction and heart failure. Heart failure in turn is associated with symptoms suggestive of perturbed gastrointestinal function such as nausea, indigestion and malabsorption.
Intragastric pressure was monitored using a balloon catheter in anesthetized mice. The pressure before and …
Functional Remodeling Of The Cardiac Glycome Throughout The Developing Myocardium, Marty L. Montpetit
Functional Remodeling Of The Cardiac Glycome Throughout The Developing Myocardium, Marty L. Montpetit
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cell surfaces are replete with complex, biologically important glycans responsible for multiple cellular functions including cell adhesion and cellular communication. Proper protein glycosylation is essential for normal development and often pathologies are marked by altered glycosylation. Here, data showed that the auxillary subunit, ß1, modified voltage-gated Na+ channel (Nav) gating in an isoform-specific, sialic acid dependent, and saturating manner. The regulated activity of the hundreds of glycogenes (glycosylation-associated genes) is responsible for protein glycosylation; this could result in a glycome of thousands of glycan structures. Microarray analyses indicated that glycogene expression was highly regulated throughout …
Characterization Of Risk From Airborne Benzene Exposure In The State Of Florida, Giffe Johnson
Characterization Of Risk From Airborne Benzene Exposure In The State Of Florida, Giffe Johnson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Environmental airborne benzene is a ubiquitous hazardous air pollutant whose emissions are generated from multiple sources, including industrial emissions, fuel station emissions, and automobile emissions. Chronic occupational exposures to elevated levels of benzene are known to be associated with leukemic cancers, in particular, acute myeloid leukemia (AML), though epidemiological evidence regarding environmental exposures and subsequent AML development is lacking. This investigation uses historical airborne monitoring data from six counties in the State of Florida to characterize the environmental cancer risk from airborne benzene concentrations using current Federal and State regulatory analysis methodology, and a comparative analysis based on occupational epidemiological …
A Potential Field Based Formation Control Methodology For Robot Swarms, Laura E. Barnes
A Potential Field Based Formation Control Methodology For Robot Swarms, Laura E. Barnes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A novel methodology is presented for organizing swarms of robots into a formation utilizing artificial potential fields generated from normal and sigmoid functions. These functions construct the surface which swarm members travel on, controlling the overall swarm geometry and the individual member spacing. Nonlinear limiting functions are defined to provide tighter swarm control by modifying and adjusting a set of control variables forcing the swarm to behave according to set constraints, formation and member spacing. The swarm function and limiting functions are combined to control swarm formation, orientation, and swarm movement as a whole. Parameters are chosen based on desired …
Opportunities For Spiritual Awakening And Growth In Mothering, Melissa J. Albee
Opportunities For Spiritual Awakening And Growth In Mothering, Melissa J. Albee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My experiences as a mother have been enhanced by spirituality and my spirituality has been transformed through the practice of mothering. I will argue that part of the transformation available in mothering is that one can go from thinking of oneself as an individual with free will, self autonomy, and independence to believing maybe we are all more connected and dependent upon each other than we thought. I intend to explore my personal spiritual journey from an academic perspective in order to gain and share knowledge. Intense emotional experiences such as childbirth, learning how to take care of a person …
Altogether Governed By Humors: The Four Ancient Temperaments In Shakespeare, Caitlin Jeanne Fahey
Altogether Governed By Humors: The Four Ancient Temperaments In Shakespeare, Caitlin Jeanne Fahey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hippocrates, and later Galen, hypothesized that a person's character was influenced by a combination of four humors that governed the body: black bile, phlegm, yellow bile, and blood. Centuries later, the Elizabethans adopted these ideologies to their medical practices, and associated each humor with one of four temperaments: melancholy, phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. References to the four temperaments may be found embedded in a number of William Shakespeare's texts, most notably Hamlet, Henry IV, Part 1, Macbeth, and Twelfth Night. While many figures in Shakespeare embody many humoral traits, allowing for character development throughout the play, …
Multiple Modes Of Mdmx Regulation Affect P53 Activation, Daniele M. Gilkes
Multiple Modes Of Mdmx Regulation Affect P53 Activation, Daniele M. Gilkes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
MDMX has emerged as a negative regulator of p53 transcriptional activity following DNA damage, loss of ribosomal integrity, and aberrant mitogenic signaling. Disruption of rRNA biogenesis by ribosomal stress activates p53 by releasing ribosomal proteins from nucleoli which bind MDM2 and inhibit p53 degradation. We found that p53 activation by ribosomal stress requires degradation of MDMX by MDM2. This occurs by L11 binding to the acidic domain of MDM2 which promotes its E3 ligase function preferentially towards MDMX. Further, unlike DNA damage which regulates MDMX stability through ATM-dependent phosphorylation events, ribosomal stress does not require MDMX phosphorylation suggesting p53 may …
Effects Of Electric Field On The Functions Of Cell Membrane Proteins, Zhongsheng Zhang
Effects Of Electric Field On The Functions Of Cell Membrane Proteins, Zhongsheng Zhang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The most important and most common channels on cell membrane are voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels. In so-called "excitable cells" like neurons and muscle cells, these channels open or close in response to changes in potential across the membrane in order to accomplish muscle contraction and transmit signals. By controlling the membrane potential, we observe extraordinary inactivation behaviors of the voltage-gated Na+ channels and the voltage-gated delayed rectifier K+ channels, which shows that electric stimulation pulses can temporarily close the Na+ and K+ channels, just as drugs, like tetrodotoxin (TTX) and tetraethylammonium (ETA), do.
The Na/K pump is essential for …
Interactions Of Neurons, Astrocytes And Microglia With Hucb Cell Populations In Stroke Models: Migration, Neuroprotection And Inflammation, Lixian Jiang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies demonstrated that intravenous administration of human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) cells could improve behavioral and neurological recovery of stroked animals following middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). In addition, HUCB cell recipients had less of an inflammatory response with less leukocyte infiltration. In these studies we explored how HUCB cells change the inflammatory response of neurons, astrocytes, and microglia to hypoxia/ischemia. Initiation of the inflammatory response occurs with the expression of chemokines. We determined that monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and macrophage inflammatory protein 1alph (MIP-1a), which are upregulated in the brain early after a stroke, induce migration of HUCB …

Drug Resistance To Topoisomerase Directed Chemotherapy In Human Multiple Myeloma, Joel G. Turner
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Human multiple myeloma is an incurable hematological malignancy characterized by the proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Myeloma represents approximately 20% of all blood cancers. In this research we have explored examples of both intrinsic and acquired drug resistance in myeloma.
Topoisomerases are enzymes that are critical for cell division, especially in rapidly dividing cells such as are found in cancer. Topoisomerase poisons are a common group of drugs that are used to treat cancer. Topoisomerase I and II poisons used in the treatment of multiple myeloma include topotecan, mitoxantrone, doxorubicin, and etoposide
In order for topoisomerase drugs …
The Inflammatory Consequences Of Stress And Adiposity, Cathy A. Bykowski
The Inflammatory Consequences Of Stress And Adiposity, Cathy A. Bykowski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The inflammatory process is important in protecting the body against the invasion of pathogens, but recent research has suggested that a long-term inflammatory response may lead to chronic diseases (e.g., Black, 2003; Wu, Dorn, Donahue, Sempos, & Trevisan, 2002). Two factors that have been implicated in the inflammatory and disease processes are stress and obesity (Black, 2003). While their individual lines of research continue to grow, few researchers have attempted to integrate these factors into one model to explain their effects on inflammation. This study aimed to replicate previous findings suggesting relationships between stress, obesity and inflammation and test an …
The Interplay Of Economic, Climatic And Cultural Change Investigated Through Isotopic Analyses Of Bone Tissue: The Case Of Sardinia 4000-1900 Bc, Luca Lai
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the broader aim of reconstructing long-term resource use and ecological history for better policy making in times of environmental change, this study is an attempt to decode the mutual effects of human subsistence practices, climate and socio-cultural organization in Sardinia between 4000 and 1900 BC. Was economy changing due to climate change? Was the environment changing due to economic practices? And how were economic practices and socio-cultural factors interacting? The answer is complex, and some convergence of complex systems theory, historical ecology and agency supports this. Diet, at the interface of all of these as fulfilling biological needs constrained …

Five elementary school students identified as at-risk for reading failure participated in the study with their mothers. Baseline data for each student was collected before parents were trained by the researcher in implementation of the intervention procedure. Parents implemented the intervention four times per week for five weeks, while the researcher continued to collect assessment data twice per week. Follow-up data were then collected for each student two weeks after the intervention ended. The effects of the intervention were evaluated using a multiple baseline across participants …
Analysis Of Glycerol 3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase And Sarco/Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium Ion Channel Atpase For Use In Deep Metazoan Phylogenetics, Terry G. Campbell
Analysis Of Glycerol 3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase And Sarco/Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium Ion Channel Atpase For Use In Deep Metazoan Phylogenetics, Terry G. Campbell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Genetic sequence data have been widely used to analyze metazoan phylogenies for two decades, and numerous datasets have been generated for testing relationships at many different taxonomic levels. The rapid divergence of major metazoan body plans during the Cambrian explosion confounds the determination of phylogenetic relationships among metazoan phyla. Few molecular analyses at this level have used both multiple genes and broad taxonomic representation. Furthermore, most studies have relied exclusively on the small ribosomal subunit rRNA gene (SSU). Many of the other genes that have been examined have possessed substitution rates that are inappropriate for resolving the relationships among metazoan …

A Novel Biostable 3d Porous Collagen Scaffold For Implantable Biosensor, Young Min Ju
A Novel Biostable 3d Porous Collagen Scaffold For Implantable Biosensor, Young Min Ju
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder whereby the body loses its ability to maintain normal glucose levels. Despite of development of implantable glucose sensors in long periods, none of the biosensors are capable of continuously monitoring glucose levels during long-term implantation reliably. Progressive loss of sensor function occurs due in part to biofouling and to the consequences of a foreign body response such as inflammation, fibrosis, and loss of vasculature.
In order to improve the function and lifetime of implantable glucose sensors, a new 3D porous and bio-stable collagen scaffold has been developed to improve the biocompatibility of implantable glucose …
