Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of paratuberculosis in dairy cattle in ElazİÛ and the surrounding villages. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based on IS900, an insertion sequence specific to Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis, was used to detect mycobacterial DNA in milk samples of 500 dairy cows. The detection limit of the PCR was assessed by spiking a known negative milk sample with a dilution series (1x10 9 to 10 bacteria/ml) of reference M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis culture). In the agarose gel examination of the PCR amplified products, approximately 50 bacteria/ml were detected. In the examination …

A Morphological Investigation Of The Postnatal Development Of The Syrinx In The Quail, Güner Bayram, Nari̇n Li̇man

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The morphological and structural development of the syrinx was studied with a light microscope in 100 female and male Japanese quails from 1 to 60 days old and adults. The quails had a tracheobronchial syrinx since it was based on both tracheal and bronchial elements. Two tracheal syringeal cartilages were attached at both ends to the pessulus in the tympanum. In this species the tympanum had a slightly increased diameter. The pessulus was a wedge-shaped cartilage, its blade lying dorsoventrally so that it divided the airway vertically. The pessulus examined histologically at 35 and 42 days post-hatching showed marked and …

Evidence That The Neurokinin 1 Receptor Is Expressed In Spinal Neurones Which Do Not Synthesize Nitric Oxide In The Rat, Mümtaz Nazli, Richard Morris

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The co-localization of the distribution of the neurokinin 1 receptor with nitric oxide was investigated in laminae I-II, III- IV, X and in the intermediolateral horn of the spinal cord in thirteen adult rats. Silver-intensified gold and standard immunocytochemical labelling or standard double immunocytochemical labelling were employed in 40µm-thick sections of the spinal cord. There were many NK1 receptor-expressing neurones in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, but none of these expressed NOS. Although neurones expressing the NK1 receptor and NOS were in close proximity in LX and IML, co-localization of the NK1 receptor and NOS in single neurones …

Cost Of Mastitis In Scottish Dairy Herds With Low And High Subclinical Mastitis Problems, Cengi̇z Yalçin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to estimate the cost of mastitis and the contribution of each cost component of mastitis to the total mastitis induced cost in herds with low and high levels of subclinical mastitis under Scottish field conditions. It was estimated that mastitis cost £140 per cow/year to the average Scottish dairy farmer in 1996. However, this figure was as low as £69 per cow/year in herds with lower levels of subclinical mastitis, and as high as £228 cow/year in herds with high sub- clinical mastitis. The magnitude and proportion of the cost components in the total …

Protein bands of hydatid fluids of sheep liver were determined by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, and this was followed by the determination of specific bands of hydatid cysts for sheep and humans. For diagnostic purposes, 30 positive and 20 negative sheep sera, 1 commercially obtained non-infected sheep serum, and 10 posi- tive and 10 negative human sera were used in this experiment. According to our results, the specific protein band for hydatid dis- ease in sheep was determined as 116 kDa, while the specific protein bands for hydatid disease in humans were determined as 68 and 8 kDa. We determined …

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (Egfr) Immunolocalization In The Male Rat Reproductive Tract During Pre-And Postnatal Periods, Celal Kaloğlu, Hüseyi̇n Eray Bulut, Bi̇lge Onarlioğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A number of recent studies suggest the effects of several growth factors as well as genetic factors on the development and differentiation of the testes and excretory ducts. One of the most important growth factors affecting the development and differentiation of the above-mentioned organs may be epidermal growth factor (EGF). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of EGF on the development of the testes and excretory ducts of male rats by determining the immunolocalization of EGF receptors in these organs during foetal and postnatal periods. To do this, testicular and excretory duct tissue samples …

A Study On The Effects Of Chilling On The Microbiological Quality Of Poultry Carcasses And Surface Decontamination With Lactic Acid, Hali̇l Tosun, Abdurrahman Üsame Tamer

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Effects of immersion chilling on the microbiological quality of poultry carcasses and cross contamination of Salmonella were studied. Levels of aerobic mezophilic bacteria, coliform, Escherichia coli and the incidence of Salmonella were determined prechill and postchill. The level of coliform and E. coli were reduced by immersion chilling (P0.05) but there was an increase in Salmonella incidence in carcasses exiting the immersion chiller indicating that this may be the point of most significant cross contamination in broiler processing plants. Experiments on microbial decontamination of poultry carcasses with lactic acid were performed. The microbial levels of poultry carcasses were reduced significantly …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Multiple regression analysis was utililised to estimate the relationship between somatic cell counts (SCC) and milk yield using the data of 1687 quarter milk samples collected weekly from 20 cows at the Dairy Unit of A.U. Veterinary Faculty's Research Farm between May and October 1998. The findings of this study supported the results of similar previous studies on that there is a negative relationship between SCC and milk yield, the relationship between milk yield and lnSCC (natural logarithmic form) is not linear. It was found that milk yield loss from SCC vary considerably according to the level of SCC. The …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Changes in the level of malondialdehyde (MDA, a degradative product of lipid peroxidation) and in the antioxidant defense system in rats with carbon tetrachloride-induced liver cirrhosis were studied, in order to determine whether there is any relation between these parameters and the disease. Liver cirrhosis was induced in Wistar-Albino rats by carbon tetrachloride (0.15 gr/100 gr body weight) which was injected subcutanously three times a week for six weeks. In the liver, the level of tissue malondialdehyde was analysed according to Yagi's method; and glutathione peroxidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, pyruvate kinase activities according to Beutler's method. The level of liver malondialdehyde …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The possible influence of factors such as depth of insemination, cervico-vaginal mucus production and reflux of semen in the vagina after insemination in German merinolandrace were considered. Fresh diluted semen was inseminated intracervically. The results obtained for non-return-rate, lambing rate and fecundity are 49.01%, 39.75% and 64.55% respectively. The year had a significant effect (p ² 0.05) on non-return-rate and lambing rate but not on fecundity. The other parameters considered did not affect prolificacy significantly.

The effects of isofluran on cardiac performance in dogs with experimental acute hemorrhagic anemia (AHA) were inves-tigated. A local anesthetic agent was administered to dogs in the control group (=2) and isofluran to dogs in the experimental group (n=6). Left ventricle systolic and diastolic blood pressure with filling and ejection time before and 15 min after AHA were deter-mined in all dogs. While left ventricle systolic blood pressure decreased (from 114±3 mm/Hg to 54±4 mm/Hg) and diastolic blood pressure decreased (from 88±6 mm/Hg to 40±2 mm/Hg), filling time increased (from 0.16±0.025 mm/sec to 0.40±0.065 mm/sec, p
