Foraminifera From Outcrops Of The Pierre Shale (Upper Cretaceous) Of North Dakota, Everett E. Wilson

In North Dakota the Pierre shale was deposited in all portions of the State except the southeastern corner, where it was either never deposited or removed by pre-Pleistocene erosion. In the western part of North Dakota the Pierre is overlain by later Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments, but to the east of the Missouri River, where it forms the bedrock, it is mantled by glacial drift. However, numerous exposures of the Pierre are present, generally in road cuts and river valleys of the southwestern and northeastern corners of the State. It is the writer's opinion that deviation from temple marriage in the Mormon culture brings to bear a direct and indirect social pressure so strong that it effects deviation in other areas of the culture. This contention is partly borne out by a tested hypothesis that "Members within the Latter-day Saint Church who were married in the temple would have characteristic patterns of behavior which would differ from patterns of behavior of those members who were married by a Church official or by a civil authority". This hypothesis was tested mainly with respect to behavior after marriage.

No formalized philosophical system has officially represented the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to this time. Some claim there is need for one while others believe that none is forthcoming or necessary. Let the question be argued elsewhere. It is to be observed that metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and science are all essentially represented in mormonism and should at least be recognized in comparison with their kind.
The useful practices of various epistemologies were employed for verification purposes although authoritarianism dominated the acquisition of knowledge in the infant Church. This need not indicate that the submitting authority was …

The majority of critics who have opposed the Book of Mormon have claimed the book is the product of one man because of the uniformity of style throughout. If these charges were true, Joseph Smith's claim of divine origin for the book and its contents would be in jeopardy.
Studies have shown Semitisms, enallage, and constructions amidst the Book of Mormon writings which seem to indicate that it is a fairly literal translation. If it is such, style differences among the writers should be evident to some degree.

The forces in the campaign that was to bring prohibition to Utah in 1917 had become identified with the prohibition movement by the spring of 1908. On the side of the drys were the various temperance organizations, the churches of Utah and the major political parties. Allied agaist the prohibition group were the combined liquor interests. Uncommitted to either side were the authorities of the Mormon Church, although both groups could seemingly lay claim to the support of the Church authorities when conflicting statements and actions of that body were put before the public view.

A major objective of the Unified Church School System is to facilitate improved student personal and social adjustment in the seminary program. Little research, as yet, has been completed in the area of seminary guidance services, yet these services offer a prodigious potential for student personal and social adjustment.
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent that seminary students of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would change in their problems of social adjustment during a nine-week period of seminary classroom attendance wherein selected group guidance techniques were used. This study was proposed to analyze articles referring to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the national magazine press. A "symbol coding" form of content analysis was used, in which each pertinent word or name was categorized, counted as indulgent or deprivatory and classified as to the thematic nature of the text.

A Historical Analysis Of Territorial Government In Utah Under Alfred Cumming, 1857-1861, Charles S. Peterson

From earliest days, Utah Territory was the scene of violent disagreement between federal officers and Mormon citizens. By 1857 returning officers reported that a rebellion existed in Utah. On the strength of these reports, President Buchanan appointed Alfred Cumming as Governor and dispatched Albert S. Johnston's army to install the new executive. Johnston's army started late and had not arrived in Salt Lake City by autumn. The Mormons further delayed the expedition until winter snows forced Johnston to encamp at Fort Bridger.

Students and scholars of the L. D. S. Scriptures have long been aware of differences existing in the various publications of the material in our Book of Moses. To our knowledge no one has ever carefully isolated or analyzed these changes nor has any explanation been given either to justify or condemn them.
Our first objective has been to make a linear comparison of all significant publications of the contents of the Book of Moses. By "significant" we refer to those publications in which there are additions or omissions of words. All changes are then considered in the light of …
