In the wake of the Protestant penetration into the Near East, Jacob Spori was sent to Constantinople in 1884 to open a mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. Spori and later his companion, Joseph M. Tanner, preached first to the Europeans of Constantinople, then projected their efforts down into the major cities of Palestine. Among the German colonists, the missionaries found several valuable converts, most of whom emigrated to Utah.
Ferdinand F. Hintze gained the title "Father of the Armenian Mission" through his extensive preaching tours throughout the interior of Asia Minor. He found …

The study of personality and its many facets is one of several significant areas in the field of psychology, which is being studied in detail. Personality, as a construct, is not often well defined and less often well understood, since it is a composite of such varied factors as perception, motivation, learning, culture and so on. Because of this present lack of clarity it must and will be discussed, written about, and experimented with until a clear, operant definition, acceptable to psychology, has been devised.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the catalytic activity in both hydrogenation and hydroformylation reactions of rhenium preparations which have not been previously characterized. Rhenium pentacarbonyl was prepared in good yield from rhenium heptoxide and carbon monoxide. The optimum conditions for preparation were 25 hours per gram of dry rhenium heptoxide at 250° under 3000 psig. (initial) of carbon monoxide. Rhenium chloropentacarbonyl was prepared in 62% yield from potassium chlororhenite and carbon monoxide at high temperatures and pressures. The iodopentacarbonyl was prepared in 29% yield from potassium perrhenate, methyl iodide, and carbon monoxide. The preparation of rhenium hydrocarbonyl …

The purpose of the investigation was to determine the catalytic activity of rhenium blacks obtained by reduction of rhenium salts in alkali metal-ammonia or amine systems. A review is presented on the chemical, physical and catalytic properties of rhenium, and on the rhenide ion, on the nature of the alkali metal-liquid ammonia system, and the reduction of metallic salts therein. The first reduction system studied was that obtained by dissolving sodium in liquid ammonia. The salts reduced in this system were KReO_4, Re_2O_7 and NH_4ReO_4. The reduction of KReO_4 was unsuccessful, and the heptoxide was difficult to handle. The product …

Stanleya pinnata has been identified as an indicator plant for seleniferous soils. The apparent limitation of its distribution to seleniferous soils suggests that selenium may play an essential role in this species. This study is a preliminary investigation of the role of selenium to Stanleya pinnata. When fully ripe, seeds germinated readily. Concentrations of selenium of 100 parts per million and 1000 parts per million retarded germination. Seeds germiuated in lower concentrations were not affected which was probably due to the selenium content of the seed itself, being greater than in the germinating media. Studies On The Periodicity Of Certain Plankton Species Of Salem Lake, Gene A. Pratt

Plankton samples were taken periodically from one station in Salem Lake from the fall of 1955 through the winter of 1957. Other data including the pH, dissolved oxygen content, turbidity, brightness of day, temperature, and time of day were recorded at the time of each collection. The plankton samples were centrifuged and preserved in a 4% formalin solution. They were later examined microscopically, and density, percent density, and percent frequency calculations were made from them for ten selected species and for the five phyla which they represent.

This investigation showed that a single bacterium was capable of sulfide oxidation in exposed ore bodies. This single bacterium was isolated and characterized. It exhibited different characteristics than any previously known organism. It was found to be a chemosynthetic autotroph. An optimum nutrient concentration was determined for pyrite oxidation. The nutrient concentration was determined for pyrite oxidation. The nutrient contains only a source of phosphate and nitrogen. Urea was found to be a better source of nitrogen than ammonium sulfate which had previously been used. The effect of various organic compounds on the oxidation of pyrite was observed. Glucose and …

Using the isotope dilution technique, the distribution of isomers was determined when iodobenzene was sulfonated with sulfur trioxide in liquid sulfur dioxide. The active isotope was S^35. Before this distribution could be established, it was necessary to prepare the pure isomers of iodobenzenesulfonic acid. These were prepared by diazotization of the corresponding aminobenzenesulfonic acids. Since o-aminobenzenesulfonic acid was not readily available, it was necessary that it be synthesized before the diazo reactions could be carried out. Considerable work has been done on the development of a method whereby the bromobenzenesulfonic acids could be synthesized and obtained in pure form. Some …

This study was undertaken to identify, if possible, some morphological characteristics of the U. S. Sitona species that would help simplify the classification of this difficult group. Because of extreme difficulty in obtaining positively identified specimens of all species reported, the scope was limited to eight identified species and one unidentified series. External structures studied include mouth parts, appendages, eyes, wings, and genitalia. The spermathecae were the only internal structures analyzed. Mandibular profiles were compared throughout the species represented and variations were noted. Labia and maxillae were observed but no distinctive differences were noticed. This paper reports the incidence and associations of four species of mites, Paraneonyssus icteridius, Ptilonyssus n. sp. "A", Sternostoma n. sp. "A" , and Speleognathus sp., found in the nasal cavities of the common red-wing blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus ssp.) and Brewer's blackbird (Euphagus cyanocephalus cyanocephalus Wagler) over-wintering in the vicinity of Provo, Utah County, Utah. Three species of mites are reported for the first time from these birds, and two of these three are undescribed species.

The development of Sacropodus opercularis Linnaeus, (Perciformes: Anabantidae), is described from cleavage to five days post hatching. For the most part M. opercularis follows the pattern of typical teleostean development except as noted below: 1. The heart develops under the left eye along the anterior margin of the yolk sac. This is similar to that reported by Ingesoll (1951) for the Blue Gourami, Trichogaster trichopterus. 2. The ear develps from the head mesenchyme alongside the brain rather than from a placode. 3. This paper includes data concerning the influence of relative humidity, temperature, and percentage of engorgement on the pre-oviposition period, oviposition period, post-oviposition period, and incubation period of the tick Dermacentor parumapertus Neumann. The influence of the percentage of engorgement on the oviposition period, oviposition rate, and egg number is considered. Data on the disposition and number of eggs in nature are discussed.

The Dehydrocyclization Of Normal Heptane To Toluene With Supported Rhenium, Platinum And Molybdenum Catalysts, Robert R. Beishline

The dehydrocyclization activity of supported platinum, molybdenum and rhenium catalysts was studied by determining the toluene yield from n-heptane as a function of temperature and metal concentration in the catalyst. The support was 100 to 200 mesh alumina. Metal concentrations of 0.01% to 1.0% platinum, 0.1% to 2.0% molybdenum and 0.1% to 2.5% rhenium were studied in the temperature range from 500° to 600° C. Platinum was shown to be superior to both molybdenum and rhenium at all temperatures and metal concentrations investigated. The rhenium data were somewhat erratic, but showed rhenium to be a poor dehydrocyclization catalyst. The apparatus, …

During the years 1950-51 work was begun on a study of the Coleoptera by the author. In 1955, due to the lack of a workable set of keys to the Coleoptera of Utah, a study was undertaken to find a way to more easily classify the beetles of the state to their respective families. The collection of Brigham Young University was used as the basis for determining the families of beetles actually found in Utah. Then a thorough search of the literature was made to find positive records of Utah families not represented in that collection. It was found that …

Because it seemed likely that teachers of adolescent Latter-day Saint boys and girls might benefit from an up-to-date view about what their students are personally concered, a need was felt for this particular kind of survey. A review of the related literature indicated a dearth of material in this area, particularly in connection with Latter-day Saint youth.
