A Study Of Ice Hockey And Its Development In North Dakota Class "A" High Schools, Maurice P. Roberge

The purposes of this study have been to determine the status of class "A” high school ice hockey in North Dakota, and to investigate problems which prevent many schools from introducing a hookey program.

Questionnaires were sent to thirty-three olass "A” high schools in North Dakota. A review of literature involved a presentation of the development of iee hockey to its present status, and ice hockey*s historical development in North Dakota class "A” high schools.

Major conclusions indicated that nine, or twenty- seven percent, of the schools participated in loe hockey on an Interscholas tic basis in 1964-65. Three schools …

In this study thirty college males volunteered to participate in a program of static and eccentric exercise. The subjects were split into two groups and were equated by means of the matched pairs method. Both groups exercised twice each week for eight consecutive weeks. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference, if any, in the retention of strength obtained by taking part in a weight-training program of exercises opposed to a program of isometric exercises.

The subjects selected for this study were freshman and sophomore male students at the University of North Dakota enrolled in the required physical education program. This selection was a random choice of one weight-training class and one isometric class. Both groups participated in their respective exercise programs for a period off eight weeks. In tracing the history and development of the football helmet in its origin and evolution, the study related the changes in design of football headgear, humorous photographic plates included throughout the chronicled data depict graphically the changes which occurred. These photographs provide a proper perspective for an understanding of the present day football helmet.

An account of the explanation proffered by designers of helmets, with reference to selection of style, has been included.

Numerous reports have been published on the taxonomy and distribution of the coprophilous Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes. No known quantitative work has been done, however, on the succession and structure of the communities formed by these higher fungi. This research was undertaken to study those two phases of the ascomycete and basidiomycete communities which grow and fruit on cow dung collected from Santaquin Canyon, Utah.

The results of this study show that section Gilmania (genus Gilia) consists of only two species G. latifolia and G. ripleyi, which are well separated from the rest of the members of genus Gilia by their simple, aristately toothed, obovate to orbicular leaf blades, many, small, brilliant rose, salverform corollas, basally inserted, stout-filamented stamens, and 30 to 100 small, reddish-brown, oval seeds per locule.

The Role Of Thiamine Pyrophosphate In Regulating The Level Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Central Nervous System, Bryant L. Adams

The level of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brains of white rats suffering from thiamine deficiency symptoms resulting from pyrithiamine or oxythiamine antagonism of thiamine or from thiamine deprivation was measured. The level of this amino acid was 17.5% lower in the brains of pyrithiamine-treated rats and 20.0% lower in the brains of thiamine-deprived rats than in the control rats. Daily injections of ten times the required amounts of vitamin B6 in rats treated with pyrithiamine or oxythiamine or by thiamine deprivation had no effect on the level of brain gamma-aminobutyric acid or on the psiological behavior of these rats. The design, construction, and calibration of a precision thermometric titration calorimeter is described. This calorimeter was tested by determining the enthalpy change for ionization of water. The result, 13.34 ±0.03 kcal/mole (standard deviation), is in exact agreement with the best literature values. This standard deviation indicates that, using this calorimeter, ΔH values can be determined with an accuracy of ±0.0.5 kcal/mole. A calorimetric procedure has been developed for the, simultaneous determination of the equilibrium constant, the enthalpy change, and the entropy change for a chemical reaction from a single titration (Entropy Titration). The enzyme ATP:thiamine pyrophosphotransferase (thiamine pyrophosphokinaseJ was purified from acetone powders which were prepared from rat brains up to the chromatography on alumina C_γ step by a modified procedure that Mano (Y. Mano, J. Biochem., 42, 283 (1960)] developed for the purification of the rat liver thiamine pyrophosphokinase. The enzyme was purified 12 fold over that in the original extract of the acetone powder. A spectrophotometric assay for the brain thiamine pyrophosphokinase was developed utilizing brewer's yeast apotransketolase. The transketolase assay was able to detect less than 10^-11 moles of thiamine diphosphate, which was synthesized by the kinase, in the …

The feasibility of applying differential thermal analysis techniques to relate variance in the chemical analysis of fouling and non-fouling lignite ashes to specific differential temperature peaks was investigated.

Analysis was accomplished by heating powdered samples (minus 200 Tyler mesh) at an average heating rate of 13° F per minute from ambient conditions to 1*850° F in an oxidising atmosphere. The samples were contained in a cylindrical nickel sample cell and temperature was monitored with ehromel-alumel thermocouples.
