When entering into the subject of turbulent flow, it is essential to understand that the kind of flow with which we deal belongs to a particular class known as shear flow. These types of flow comprise flow fields in which relative velocities have been induced by shear stresses rather than by the action of pressure forces. The Manning Canyon Shale on the eastern slope of Lake Mountain in Utah County, Utah contains an Early Pennsylvanian flora within its upper shales. Many of these fossils appear to be new species. A microscopic study of the tissue remains can be of value in the further classification of these fossils. Selected fossils were macerated in hydrofluoric acid, and the residues were examined microscopically for tissue remains. Objects identified as fossil tissue remains were found in twenty five of the forty-eight specimens examined. Fibers, fiber tracheids, tracheids, and spores were isolated from fossils identified as Calamites. The spores were possibly …

The purpose of this study was to compare and differentiate between the extent of physical fitness of 193 elementary school children in Crookston, Minnesota as achieved by two different types of playground equipment. The experimental equipment consisted of an obstacle course while the control group used conventional equipment.

The statistical procedure used in this study included the matched sample and random sample t test. In using these two procedures, the matched sample t test was computed using a program of related t scores in matrix form for 30 variables with means and standard deviations. Within the last ten years there has been much interest in the field of elasto-plastic behavior of engineering materials. Hie recent popularity of the low-cost light-weight plastically designed structures has added a great deal of impetus to this interest. This thesis deals with one of the aspects of elasto-plastic behavior, namely, the distribution of the residual stresses in a simple member which has been plastically deformed in tension and/or compression,. In particular, an attempt has been made to relate these residual stresses to the well-known but little understood Bauschinger effect.

In recent years there has been much engineering effort channeled toward obtaining higher strength, lower weight and cost product designs. In pursuit of this goal some carefully designed and tested parts have catastrophically failed after a long history of repeated successful service, even though the load at the time of failure was no higher than the part had repeatedly carried previously. These mechanical failures are commonly classified as fatigue failures.

Deer flies have been implicated as mechanical veotors of tularemia in Utah. Although infected flies heretofore have not been tound in nature, there is little doubt of their importance in transmitting tularemia to man. Two species present in this area, Chrysops discalis Williston and Chrysops noctifer Osten Sacken, have been shown experimentally to transmit the disease. Two types of water-soluble complexes of chlorophyll a with organic polymers have been investigated: chlorophyll a coordinately bonded to poly 4-vinylpyridine and a chlorophyll derivative, Mg-chlorin e_6 phytyl methyl ester, covalently bonded to GANTREZ AN (poly (methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride) ). The first complex was observed upon dissolving chlorophyll a and poly 4-vinylpyridine in aqueous ethanol solutions. The Mg-chlorin e_6 diester-GANTREZ AN complex (chlorophyll a/polymer) was made by aminolysing the chlorophyll ring V with 1, 6-hexanediamine to give an intermediate product, Mg-chlorin e_6 -6-N-(6' -aminohexyl) carboxamide, phytyl methyl ester. Charge transfer complexes were studied spectrophotometrically in the liquid state by a modified Benesi-Hildabrand method. TiCl_4 - Benzene and TiCl_4 - diphenyl ether solutions were found to form contact charge transfer complexes, that is complexes with very weak and non-directional interactions. The systems TiCl_4 - anisole and TiCl_4 - diethyl ether form complexes of the types AD and AD_2 where A stands for TiCl_4 and D stand s for the organic donor. The formation constants for the complexes were, for the TiCl_4 - anisole, K_1 = 0.077, K_2 = 0.01; and TiCl_4 - diethyl ether, K_1= 3.0, K_2 = 1.0. …

A method is reported for determining the species formed in solution by ligand replacement reactions. Reactions in dilute aqueous solution were studied in which the Cl^- on HgCl_2(aq) was replaced by hydroxide ion, ethylenediamine, glycinate ion, and methylamine. The species formed by the replacement reactions were established through computer analysis of pH titration data. Various reaction sequences were proposed for each system and log K values were calculated for each sequence. The selection of the correct reaction sequence for each system was based on the premise that only when the correct sequence is proposed will consistent log K values be …
