Edwin Fremont Ladd, a native of :Maine, migrated to North Dakota in 1890 to join the chemistry faculty of the Agricultural College. In the following three decades, his work in the pure-food crusade and in the fight for fair grain grading and reasonable rail rates earned him a reputation for personal courage and devotion to agriculture. His reputation led the Nonpartisan League to endorse him for the United States Senate in 1920. Following his victory over Senator Asle J. Gronna in the Republican primary, Ladd defeated his Democratic opponent in the general election.

Due to a lack of taxonomic and distributional information concerning the Common Crow Corvus brachryhynchos Brehm inhabiting the Great Basin of North America, Johnston (1961) in one of the most recent revisions on crows, was unable to include this area in his work. Between 1965 and 1967, field trips were taken throughout the Great Basin to secure specims, and to determine to what extent the area was being utilized by crows. Ecological information such as habitat prference, nesting behavior, and interactions with other species was collected where possible. Forty-eight birds were collected from the Great Basin. One species of lichen from each of three different families (Collema wyomingensis , Caloplaca elegans (Link)T. Fries, and Parmelia molliuscula Ach.) was studied to determine whether or not these lichens can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Samples of these three lichens were collected in the early spring of 1967. Samples of each species were placed in 20-ml glass tubes which contained 5 ml of glass wool saturated with 0.5 M nitrogen-free Hoaglands nutrient solution. These tubes were sealed by heat onto a gas manifold system and evacuated. An N15- enriched atmosphere (22 atoms % N15) was introduced into the tubes from the …

In the cross, S. cereale ♀ x S. africanum ♂, near normal seeds were formed. They showed 40% germination. In the reciprocal cross, S. africanum ♀ x S. cereale ♂, the seeds were dry, brittle, extremely shrivelled at maturity and none germinated. Reciprocal differences as sharp as those in crosses between S. cereale and S. africanum were not noted in crosses of S. cereale with S. montanum or with S. vavilovii. Seeds from the cross S. cereale ♀ x S. montanum ♂ showed 81% germination, whereas seeds from the reciprocal cross S. montanum ♀ x S. cereale ♂ showed 77% …

The term water clarifier as used in this text refers to a versatile water treatment unit which combines flocculation and coagulation, clarification and positive sludge removal in a single tank. Water clarifiers are very compact units which are being used in municipal and industrial water treatment for the removal of turbidity, algae, color, iron and silica; lime or lime-soda softening; magnesium precipitation; brine clarification; and waste water clarification with or without chemicals. Water clarifier units have found wide use in the sanitary field, providing high removals in the pre-treatment of sewage and in secondary sewage treatment through addition of coagulants.

This study was undertaken to examine the operation of the United States Court of Military Appeals, and the effects of that Court's decisions upon military justice in the armed services. Of particular interest was the Court's concern for safeguarding the constitutional rights of military personnel.

Extensive study of cases revealed an improving trend in the administration of military justice at the trial and investigative level and an increasing concern at all command levels for fairness and impartiality in military judicial proceedings. In this investigation a comparative study is made of the dynamic behavior of rigid and elastomeric bearings of a model bridge subjected to eccentric vibratory loading.

Bor the experimental portion, static and vibration tests were conducted using an approximate one-third scale model bridge 25 ft long and 10 ft wide, with a composite section of steel girders and concrete bridge deck slab. A counterrotating eccentric weight oscillator was used to produce oscillatory loads on the bridge. Tests were conducted with three types of bearing conditions: curved steel sole plates, 64 durometer and 49 durometer hardness neoprene pads.

The purpose of this research was to record the early life and political career of the former Attorney General, Governor, and Senator from North Dakota, William Langer. Due to the magnitude of his career, the study was focused on his youth, his education, his first political campaign and election as Morton County States Attorney, his work as States Attorney, and his campaign and election as Attorney General of North Dakota in 1916.

The reduviid bug, Triatoma infestans, was Investigated as a possible vector of Rauscher murine leukemia, since these insects are closely associated in nature as inhabitants of rodent burrows.

The effect of triatomid ingestion of leukemic blood was tested by maintaining insects fed on leukemic mice for various periods, and then injecting whole-insect homogenates into test mice. The viremic period for mice injected with Rauscher virus was determined by inoculating a large group of mice and sacrificing them over an 18-day period. Blood and spleen preparations were assayed for presence of virus by inoculating test mice. Biological and mechanical transmission was …

The study consisted of a comparison of two methods of teaching the elementary backstroke to beginning swimmers. Students of the University of North Dakota "Upward Bound" project volunteered as experimental subjects. The instructor pre-tested the students to see that those participating fell in the beginning swimming classification. The students were taken through the beginning swimming progressions as outlined by the American Red Cross. After they had progressed sufficiently in basic swimming skills, the subjects were arbitrarily placed into two experimental groups.

In this thesis the writer has considered types of convergence in an arbitrary topological space. Three types of convergence are considered, convergence of sequences in the real numbers with the usual topology, convergence of Moore-Smith sequences in an arbitrary topological space, and convergence of filters in an arbitrary topological space.

In Chapter II, we show that sequences are inadequate to describe limit points of sets and hence the topology in an arbitrary topological space. The idea of a sequence is generalized in this chapter to Moore-Smith sequences and in Chapter III to filters.

Much of the data was obtained from personal interviews with executives of five North Dakota advertising agencies. Such agency topics as clients, services, media used, billings, and false and misleading advertising laws adhered to by North Dakota agencies were described.

The depth distribution of goldeye, Hiodon alosoides, and yellow perch, Perea flavescens. was studied in Moccasin Bay on the Little Missouri Arm of Garrison Reservoir, North Dakota, using a specially constructed vertical gill net (June through August, 1966). Ten other species were captured in relatively small numbers. Throughout the summer nearly all goldeye were caught at night in the upper ten feet of water. Indications were that goldeye depth distribution was affected more by light and feeding habits than by the limnological factors measured. Small numbers of yellow perch caught in June indicated no distinct depth preference; however, all yellow …

Liquor control and prohibition were the most conspicuous moral issues to face the legislature and the electorate, but other measures to regulate Sunday movies and baseball, smoking, and dancing were introduced. Observations and collections on the breeding biology and life history of Rana pretiosa pretiosa Baird and Girard have been made in central Utah from 1962 to 1967. The frogs' activities were followed from their spring emergence untril the tadpoles metamorphosed and hibernated in the fall. Collections and observations were made at regular intervals through the entire period of summer activity. Data were gathered at the ponds and samples of the life history stages were taken to the laboratory where they were analyzed and studied. Emergence is normally during the middle of March.
