The purpose of this study was to show the improvements in physical fitness levels between two experimental groups. Experimental Group I consisted of twenty-one athletes and Experimental Group II consisted of twenty-six students in the required physical education program. Intra and inter group comparisons were made from the data collected from a special eight-item physical fitness test.

The null hypothesis was assumed with respect to the difference between the means of both groups. The hypothesis was tested with the "t" technique for checking significance of difference between means, and the F technique for determining the significance of the difference among …

The purpose of this study was to determine the changes, if any, of selected strength factors of typical North Dakota high school wrestlers, as these might be affected by programs of weight reduction or weight control.

Right grip, left grip, push, pull, leg and back strength data of the subjects were recorded using a dynamometer. The subjects were tested five times during and after the season.

The attempt is made in this paper to show that the Appalachian dulcimer is a variant, transplanted form of similar folk instruments which are to be found in northern Europe and that the dulcimer is neither a native American instrument nor English in origin.

The procedure followed is to note the place in which the Appalachian dulcimer fits into the Sachs-von Hornbostel classification of musical instruments and to describe the northern European instruments which also belong there. The northern European instruments and the Appalachian dulcimer are then compared.

A Comparison Study Of The Ecological Distribution Of Small Mammals In Southwestern North Dakota, Lenette K. Svihovec

The objectives of this study were to survey the small mammal fauna from eight habitats typical of southwestern North Dakota and to determine the habitat preference of the species found. Fifteen species were collected and grouped according to their occurrence in areas of varying vegetation densities.

Four species (Reithrodontomys megalotis, Microtus penn- sylvanicus, Sorex cinereus, and Eutamias minimus) were collected in dense vegetation. R. megalotis and M. oennsylvanicus were most abundant and exhibited preferences for cottonwood bottomlands and lowland meadows. S_. cinereus was also limited to lowland meadows, while Eh minimus occurred primarily in brushy coulees.

This study was undertaken to determine the changes elicited by the use of the Exer-genie exerciser as a sprint-start training device.

Ten freshman end varsity sprinters who were members of the University of North Dakota intercollegiate track team served as subjects. The control group participated in the initial and final testing and followed the regularly scheduled track training and practice. The experimental group participated in similar tasting and training, but also worked two or three times per week on a controlled Exer-genie program.

The purpose of this study was to discover a method of administering exercises in a graded physical education program that would not use excessive class time for the calisthenic period. Twenty-four elementary school children from the Benjamin Franklin Elementary School in Grand Forks, North Dakota, participated in the study. Experimental Group One took part in a graded program which included types of calisthenics within the activity. Experimental Group Two exercised for twelve minutes before regular activity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether selected fifth and sixth grade children were capable of increasing their gymnastic skills in an advanced program of instruction in tumbling.

An experimental group was requested to participate in the study. This group of thirty subjects (eight boys and twenty-two girls) experienced an advanced gymnastic program three times weekly for a two and one-half month period. This experimental group was further divided into boy and girl subgroups.

During the fall of 1966 and the spring of 1967, 55 muskrats were trapped along the reaches of the English Coulee, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. These muskrats were necropsied and all ectoparasites and endoparasites collected. The parasites were stained and identified and the number of worms counted to discern the parasite burden.

Eight species of parasites were found. The only ectoparasite encountered was Laelaps multispinosus (89.09 per cent incidence). Four species of trematodes were identified as Echinostoma revolutum (34.54 per cent), Quinqueserialis quinqueserialis (47.27 per cent), Notocotylus urbanensis (41.81 per cent), and Plagiorchis proximus (14.54 per cent). Hematological comparisons were made on the Uinta ground squirrel (Citellus armatus) trapped at different altitudes and during vari ou s stages of seasonal activity in 1965 and 1966. Hematological variation due to sex, sexual activity and body weight were also analyzed. Ground squirrels were secured from the Mt. Timpanogos area near Provo, Utah County, Utah. Erythrocyte count, hematocrit, total blood hemoglobin, mean erythrocyte volume, mean erythrocyte hemoglobin and reticulocyte counts were measured using standard procedures; banding patterns of hemoglobin and serum proteins wer e determined by means of electrophoresis with polyacetate strips.

Hemoglobin, from the erythrocytes of adult and fetal pigs, was isolated and analyzed by carboxymethylcellulose column chromatography and electrophoresis on polyacetate. These techniques demonstrate the existence of four fetal components (F0, F1A, F1B, F1C) and two adult components (A0, A1) based on their elution pH values and electrophoretic mobilities. The shift from-fetal to adult forms is initiated sometime between eight weeks after birth and one year. The change is not completed until sometime after one year and the major fetal forms (F0, F1A) maintain a 15% level in a mature adult. This report is in contrast with the results of …

An ecological study was conducted at Cascade Springs, Wasatch county, Utah from August 1965, to June 1967. The algae and aquatic moss species were determined and ecological information about these organisms was obtained. Physical data were also collected: bicarbonates, carbonates, free carbon dioxide, hydroxides, oxygen, pH, and temperature. The physical environment of the water was found to be very constant. Tests taken at the different study sites were consistently similar, not only during each day, but all year around. No great variation of any kind was found in the water. The sulfonation of chlorobenzene, chlorobenzene-benzene, and toluene-benzene mixtures by sulfur trioxide in liquid sulfur dioxide at -12.5° C. was studied to obtain isomer distribution and relative rate data. The isomer distribution for the reaction on chlorobenzene was determined by an isotope dillution technique. Relative rate experiments were conducted by sulfonating C14 labeled benzene in competition with nonradioactive chlorobenzene and toluene and the count rate of the products was used to determine product composition. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry was also used to investigate variations in isomer distributions as a function of sulfur trioxide concentration. Predation by thrips was referred to as early as 1882 when Pergande discussed their habits. Later, Plank (1936) found Leptothrips mali (Fitch) to be predaceous on lepidopterous eggs, and Sharp (1938) cited it as a being a predator of the pecan nut caseborer, Acrobasis caryae Grote. A letter was used to survey a few selected industrial arts electricity-electronics programs for information regarding the subject. The purpose of the survey was to gather data, opinions, and ideas concerning transistor theory and methods of teaching.

Maturation of the collagen fiber involves aggregation of the tropocollagen molecule through increasing numbers of inter- and intramolecular crosslinkages. Maturation is reflected in the transition of soluble to insoluble collagen. An experimental model, lathyrism, induced by beta-aminopropionitrile (BAPN), alters the normal collagen bonding and produces an increase of the saline-soluble collagen. Conflicting reports have been made concerning bond alteration of the insoluble fiber by BAPN, reverting the collagen to a more soluble state. This study is a content analysis of editorials in the four North Dakota newspapers. Its purpose is to determine the amount of conflict- oriented editorial content of each paper. A representative sample of each of the four papers was chosen for analysis. Two types of content analysis were performed to determine what subjects were discussed, and to determine the direction (whether conflict or cooperation) of the subject matter. Three judges were used to code a sample of the material, and inter-agreement percentages were calculated for each coder. Daily movements of two adjacent microtine populations were correlated with the utilization of various types of microenvironments. Animals were trapped, marked and released on a gridded area which transected three ecological zones, a riparian woodland, an edge, and an old field. Average distance traveled between recaptures and standard diameters were used to estimate activity patterns and home ranges of the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus, and the red-backed vole, Clethrionomys gapperi. Microtus restricted their activity to grassy habitats while Clethrionomys remained in the woodland. There was no ecological overlap between the two species.
