In recent years, experiments have been carried out to evaluate the performance of water-filled cushion cells used to attenuate energy of automobile collisions. The water-filled cushion cell is a vinyl plastic cylinder of 6 inches nominal outside diameter, 1/4 inch wall thickness, 40 inches length, closed at the bottom by a cast-in-place vinyl plug and partially closed by a bolted-in vinyl diaphragm at the upper end. These cells are designed to be installed in the path of a crashing automobile to absorb and dissipate the kinetic energy of impact. Properly designed cushions could be used as one means of saving …

The purpose of this thesis was the development of a generalized structural-dynamics computer program to calculate the response of multi-degree-of-freedom systems. The user of this computer program, having a limited background in matrix algebra and vibrational analysis, can gain numerical and graphical information concerning the dynamic response of multi-degree-of-freedom structures. The user, with a minimal amount of FORTRAN experience, will find this thesis ideally suited for his needs.

Information was collected on the nesting ecology of the Great Horned Owl, with particular emphasis placed on aspects of its population and distribution, territoriality and predation. The study was conducted for the two years, 1967 and 1968 in the Thorpe and Topliff hills of central western Utah. Nesting densities on the study area were .36 pairs per square mile in 1967 and .40 pairs per square mile in 1968. Nests averaged one mile apart and were distributed in the periphery of the hills, overlooking the desert valleys. A new isothermal titration calorimeter has been designed to facilitate the study of heats of reaction and heats of solution at constant temperature. With this calorimeter, endothermic or exothermic processes can be studied at temperatures constant to ±0.0002°C. Heat effects are compensated by balancing the heat effect of the process taking place in the calorimeter against a variable heat and a constant cooling Peltier device. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and the heat of dilution of aqueous HClO_4 solutions. For these systems heats were measured to an accuracy of ±0.02 calorie. The unsettled status of the Red River Valley during the 1860's made inevitable the establishment of a military post near the 49^th Parallel. The Minnesota Uprising in 1862 caused a band of Sioux Indians, responsible for the massacre, to flee to Canada to escape punishment by the military. In 1863, a hastily organized battalion established a temporary fort at Pembina to capture the renegades. After accomplishing its mission, the battalion abandoned the post in 1864.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the overhand, sldearra or underarm throw was the most accurate. Twenty boys from the Grand Forks, North Dakota, Park Board Babe Huth and Rookie League baseball programs participated in the study. The test activity Included fielding ground balls from different angles and throwing for accuracy using the three methods mentioned. A retest involving seven of the subjects was administered later to determine whether any consistency existed In the methods of throwing being used.

The Effect Of Thiamine And Its Antagonists On Plasma And Tissue Lactic Dehydrogenase In Rats, Dong Hwa Park

The lactic dehydrogenase activity in plasma and tissues was measured in the thiamine-deprived, the oxythiamine-treated and the pyrithiamine-treated rats as well as the control rats. The lactic dehydrogenase levels of brain and kidney were significantly increased by oxythiamine treatment. The enzyme activity in heart was markedly decreased only in the thiamine-deprived rats. Unlike the above tissues, the enzyme levels in liver were decreased by 29-44 per cent in all three types of thiamine deficiency, However, the enzyme activity in plasma was significantly increased only by pyrithiamine administration. The distribution patterns of lactic dehydrogenase isozymes were electrophoretically examined in these deficiencies. …

A possible thyroidal control of water balance in the leopard frog, Rana pipiens, was investigated by (1) chemically thyroidectomizing intact animals by chronic injections of the goitrogen, 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU ), or making animals hyperthyroid with thyroxine injections, and (2) dehydration of the frogs in a flow of air to enhance the rate of water loss through the skin, followed by rehydration in tap water until the animals regained their former weight. The first dry cleaning plants in the state of North Dakota are believed to have been established during the late 1890s. The data used in the study was collected from a sample of full-service dry cleaning plants in North Dakota. A mail questionnaire was employed in the survey.

Multiple unit recording is a relatively new electrophysiological recording technique which records spike potentials from many neurons. In the Halas laboratory and others, systematic changes have been observed during classical conditioning but none under other conditioning procedures . Recently, some have interpreted changes in evoked potentials and multiple unit potentials as due to emotional arousal (fear) and thus related more to a conditioned emotional response (CER) than to conditioning per se. A suitable technique for preparation of lignite ash deposits for electron microprobe analyses was developed. Six samples were prepared and systematically analyzed on the microprobe for chemical concentrations and distribution relationships at four separate positions on the tube deposit. The six samples were collected on air cooled tubes placed in the combustion gas stream during combustion of four high sodium lignites and two low sodium lignites in the Bureau of Mines pilot plant combustor.

Sodium-sulfur compounds were found in a layer completely surrounding the tube. The thickness of this layer was reduced when covered by the bulk of the deposit. …

The development of the gubernatorial veto is outlined, the state constitutional provisions concerning it are presented, and individual performances by governors are indicated. A more detailed account of the veto exercised by the current Governor, William L. Guy, is given.
