Supporting Underprepared Writers In An Academic Success Program, Alison Ersheid Jan 2024

Supporting Underprepared Writers In An Academic Success Program, Alison Ersheid

Theses and Dissertations

For decades, colleges and universities have been grappling with the task of closing the readiness gap for underprepared writers entering the higher education system. Traditional developmental education models are costly and inefficient at best, and detrimental to the matriculation of students at worst. Bridge programs have had moderate success, but at a high price tag. Within the last decade, alternate approaches to developmental education, such as accelerated and corequisite models, have emerged. While these approaches have demonstrated success in improving overall student proficiency and confidence, little is known about the specific mechanisms and environments that promote success and improve writing …

In this convergent mixed-methods design study, the researcher explored the self-efficacy beliefs and attitudes of teachers towards using classroom read-alouds to teach social-emotional learning, and how those teacher self-efficacy beliefs and attitudes relate to the amount of time they spend on classroom read-alouds for social-emotional learning. Guided by Social Learning and Self-Efficacy theories, the researcher …

Evaluation Of Microglia’S Structural Variations Within An Organotypic Hippocampal Slice Model After Regionalized Toxic Injury, Jesus Antonio Trejos Jan 2024

Evaluation Of Microglia’S Structural Variations Within An Organotypic Hippocampal Slice Model After Regionalized Toxic Injury, Jesus Antonio Trejos

Theses and Dissertations

The dendritic cells of the CNS, the microglia (MG), are an initiation point of the immunological response within the post blood-brain barrier (BBB) compartment. Microglia morphology drastically changes in response to cell stress to a much different non-dendritic morphology. This investigation postulates that if the first MG responses to toxic injury are isolated and studied in greater morphological detail there is much to be learned about MG metamorphosis from a baseline (M2) to an activated (M1) state. The organotypic hippocampal slice was the experimental setting used to investigate microglial response to toxic injury. This isolates dendritic cellular responses and associated …

Insulin And Dma Suppress The Innate Immune Response Against Aav, Tianxiang Qi Jan 2024

Insulin And Dma Suppress The Innate Immune Response Against Aav, Tianxiang Qi

Interplay Between Rna Editing And Alternative Splicing Modulates Biophysical And Pharmacological Properties Of The Ion Channel Cav1.3, Willy Munyao

Theses and Dissertations

Alternative splicing and adenosine-to-inosine (A-to-I) RNA editing are post-transcriptional mechanisms that promote proteomic diversity in the brain. The impact of RNA editing on brain physiology is underscored by its association with the etiology and pathogenesis of various neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. Alternative splicing of exon 43 within the CaV1.3 C-terminus produces long (CaV1.3L) and short (CaV1.343S) variants exhibiting distinct gating and pharmacological properties. While the physiological role of CaV1.3 A-to-I RNA editing in brain function is still unfolding, recent findings indicate that unedited CaV1.3 channels display larger calcium influx and enhanced neuronal excitability, suggesting that A-to-I RNA editing may act …

Arab Americans, those who themselves or their ancestors have immigrated fromthe Middle East or North Africa to the United States, experience a lot of stress as a result of balancing varying cultures, known as acculturative stress. Due to the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of Arabs in Americans, as well as the taboo that exists in the Arab culture regarding poor mental health and seeking mental health services, the mental health impacts of acculturation stress among this population are scarcely studied. This dissertation aims to further understand ways in which acculturative stress impacts early generational Arab American adults, including immigrants and refugees, …

Modeling The Burden Of Racial Discrimination And Its Effects On Anger Coping: A Latent Profile Analysis, Brandon Dial Jan 2024

Modeling The Burden Of Racial Discrimination And Its Effects On Anger Coping: A Latent Profile Analysis, Brandon Dial

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: Perceived racial discrimination (PRD) is defined as unfair treatment received because of one’s race. Although prior research has established that PRD is a chronic psycho-social stressor with various subdimensions, there is less research exploring whether unique profiles or clusters of discriminatory experiences exist. Further, although research has identified positive relations between discrimination and anger suppression and expression, it is not known if profiles of discriminatory experiences are differentially linked to patterns of anger expression (i.e., anger suppression, outward anger expression, or anger control). Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify profiles of discriminatory experiences in a sample …

Synthesis Of Leishmania Spp Antigens For The Development Of Vaccine Candidates, Dipesh Budhathoki Jan 2024

Synthesis Of Leishmania Spp Antigens For The Development Of Vaccine Candidates, Dipesh Budhathoki

Theses and Dissertations

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite of the genus Leishmania. Presently no vaccine against Leishmaniasis is available, so there is a need for new anti-leishmanial treatments, including an effective preventive vaccine. We focus on developing vaccine candidates based on leishmania’s cell surface carbohydrate antigens. Saccharides heavily envelop the cell surface of Leishmania, lipophosphoglycan (LPG) becoming a significant glycan in most leishmania species. Its intrinsic antigenicity makes this polysaccharide a useful target for developing conjugated vaccine candidates against all leishmaniasis variants. In this report, we present our progress towards the synthesis of the fragments of LPG …
