The Serlogical Specificity Of The Lectin From Lens Culinaris, Deborah Ward Heritage Jan 1973

The Serlogical Specificity Of The Lectin From Lens Culinaris, Deborah Ward Heritage

Theses and Dissertations

Lens culinaris, the common lentil, contains a lectin which has been shown to be specific for a glycoprotein saliva antigen and a glycolipoprotein serum antigen. Both the saliva and serum precipitin reactions with the lectin are directly inhibited with saccharides, especially those related to D-mannose. Electrophoresis of the serum antigen showed that it migrates as three bands, while appearing as a single band in double diffusion precipitin patterns. Quantitative studies of the saliva antigen levels by hemagglutination inhibition titration indicated a polygenic, quantitative mode of inheritance with a minimum heritability of O. 34. Blood group ABH secretor individuals were found …

The latest Cenozoic in northeast Mercer County, North Dakota, is represented by five formations. They are, from bottom to top: the Charging Eagle Formation, the Medicine Hill Formation, the Snow School Formation, the Coteau Formation, and the Oahe Formation.

The Charging Eagle Formation is mainly fluvial sediment. Most of the sediment was derived from the west with only minor amounts from the northeast. It contains the first evidence of glaciation in the area.

The lower Medicine Hill Formation is mainly sediment deposited by a northeast-flowing ancestor of the Missouri River and by melt-water streams. The upp.er Medicine Hill Formation is …

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders Jan 1973

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders

Theses and Dissertations

During the 19th Century, the Mississippi River was the chief commercial highway in the United States. But for two impediments, the Upper and Lower (Des Moines) Rapids, its entire course of 2400 miles would have offered an untroubled thoroughfare to watercraft.

The federal government, as well as private concerns, attempted throughout the better part of that century to alleviate the river of its barriers and to develop its rapids as a source of power. Those attempts were disappointingly unsuccessful, however, and not until the advent of the 20th Century, when the nation had matured both economically and technologically, was the …

Alexander William Doniphan, The Forgotten Man From Missouri, Gregory P. Maynard Jan 1973

Alexander William Doniphan, The Forgotten Man From Missouri, Gregory P. Maynard

Theses and Dissertations

Few men on the Missouri frontier in the nineteenth century exemplified the quality of character, integrity, as well as did Alexander William Doniphan. Whether in his capacity as a lawyer, soldier, legislator or friend, he remained steadfast to his beliefs and principles, though often in the minority.
Several books have been written about Doniphan's military experiences during the Mexican War. But surprisingly this is the only part of his life which so far has been reported in great detail. The other aspects of his career have been treated only in a sketchy manner. It is therefore the purpose of this …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis has been a study of possible lexical Hebraisms occurring in the Book of Mormon in the sections entitled "The Words of Mormon" through "Moroni." A Hebraism was defined as any word or phrase which appeared to be a literal rendering of a Hebrew lexicographic mode of speech, in that the English had a usage or connotation which was not normal; whereas, if translated literally into Hebrew it would represent standard usage.

Nearly two hundred such items were found, some one hundred twenty of which were discussed in the body of the thesis. Of these, nouns contributed over sixty …

At the same time, ways of meeting student needs in a confluent setting were sought.

The review of the literature provided relevant information already available through the efforts of other researchers. A multidiscipline approach in this review resulted in several conclusions:

1. Certain bio-self needs result in feelings that cause behavior.

2. Feelings and learning can be correlated so that behavior change takes place.

3. Learning …

Political Attitudes And Constitutional Revision: A Study Of Delegate Attitudes At The 1972 North Dakota Constitutional Convention, Cynthia A. Rothe

Theses and Dissertations

Formerly, state constitutional conventions have been studied basically by a content analysis of the proposed document. This study undertakes a perusal of the political attitudes of the delegates. These political attitudes fall into two categories: delegate conceptualizations and delegate orientations. Delegate conceptualizations focus on the delegate's basic concept of a constitutional convention. Four specific factors—role, pressure, inclination on change, and orientation toward the convention process—are included within delegate orientations. These political attitudes are analyzed according to various background characteristics of the delegates. To some extent, the political attitudes of the delegates are reflected in their voting behavior. An analysis of …
