Perceptions: An Artist's Statement, Stephen Cockrille
Perceptions: An Artist's Statement, Stephen Cockrille
Theses and Dissertations
In the first part of this artist statement I have attempted to explain the point of view which has predominately contributed to the creation of my images. This point of view is in many ways a political point of view. It attempts to articulate various broad cultural determinants and the general affect of these determinants on us as spontaneous and potentially creative human beings.
The second part is concerned with a description of the images that accompany this statement and a clarification of some of the symbols used in these images.

The Effects Of Deficiencies Of Certain Mineral Nutrients On The Activity And Various Properties Of Ribulose-1,5-Diphosphate Carboxylase From Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.), Philip Alan Harrison
Theses and Dissertations
Barley plants grown in Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu deficient media were analyzed for specific activity, total activity and amount of RuDPCase present. Percent dry weight, as well as chlorophyll and soluble protein content were determined. All deficiencies caused lower chlorophyll and RuDPCase concentrations than occurred in the control. Soluble protein content, however, was higher in all deficient plants than in the control, either on a dry or a fresh weight basis. The addition of 18 μM Mn^2+ increased the activity of Mg^2+ containing RuDPCase preparations as much as 133% above normal. The specific activity of RuDPCase from Mg, Mn, …

Fate And Metabolism Of Bas 290-H In A Model Ecosystem, Kuo-Mei Chang
Theses and Dissertations
The use of chemicals to control economic pests has grown in this century both in the amount and the diversity of materials used (Headley and Lewis, 1967). About ten billion pounds of pesticides have been used in the United States since 1945. It is estimated that there are 340 million acres of cultivated lands in the Continental United States. Of this amount, approximately 119 million acres were sprayed with herbicides, 97 million acres were treated with insecticides and 25 million acres were treated with fungicides and other minor pesticides (Matsumura, 1972).

Community Characteristics Of Six Burned Aspen-Conifer Sites And Their Related Animal Use /|Clarry H. Kleinman, Larry H. Kleinman
Theses and Dissertations
Six forest areas destroyed by fire representing different seral stages of aspen development and conifer invasion were studied to determine successional dynamics and the related livestock and big game use. Factors measured were: (a) age, basal area, density and frequency of aspen and conifer trees; (b) density and frequency of under-story species; (c) forage production for forbs, grasses, and browse, and (d) animal-days use for deer, cattle and sheep. Aspen appeared in the community the spring following the fire and conifers appeared fifteen to twenty years later. Conifers had begun to dominate aspen on an eighty-two year old stand. The …

Interaction Between Triiodothyronine (T₃) And Thyroxine (T₄) In The Chick And The Rat, Kurtis George Cornish
Interaction Between Triiodothyronine (T₃) And Thyroxine (T₄) In The Chick And The Rat, Kurtis George Cornish
Theses and Dissertations
The secretion of two hormones with identical function by the thyroid gland has been questioned, What is the relationship between these two hormones? Why does the thyroid secrete two hormones when either one can provide for all the activity of the thyroid (Greer, 1972). Little work has been done on the relationship between the two hormones. There is some evidence showing that thyroxine (T4) is deiodinated to triiouothyronine (T3) at the tissue level in mammals. Chambers (1970) found that there was a negative interaction between T4 and T3 when pharmacologic doses were administered to the rat. The present study was …

Speciation In The Genus Sceloporus Sceloporus (Sauria, Iguanidae) As Determined By Cranial Osteology And Other Characters, Kenneth Rex Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
Numerical statistical methods were used to analyse the species in the genus Sceloporus using cranial osteology, external meristic and numeric characters, karyology, display behavior and geographic distribution. A new phylogeny for the genus is proposed with three main branches or Groups: Group I, a primitive group, evolved from Uta, Urosaurus and Sator in Miocene times. This Group speciated from gadoviae in the south to merriami in the north and contains 7 species in 3 species groups. Group II arose from Group I and evolved from centrally located pictus in all directions throughout Mexico. It contains approximately 19 species in 5 …
Morphogenesis Of Photoreceptors In The Chick Retina: An Electron Microscopic Study, Mark D. Olson
Morphogenesis Of Photoreceptors In The Chick Retina: An Electron Microscopic Study, Mark D. Olson
Theses and Dissertations
An electron microscopic investigation of the morphogenesis of photoreceptor cells in the domestic fowl (Gallus gallus) retina is presented in this study. The fine structural observations illustrate photoreceptor development ranging from five to twenty-one days of incubation and one to two days post-hatching. Retinal tissues were fixed in buffered aldehyde fixative, post-fixed in buffered 2% osmium tetroxide and otherwise conventionally prepared for electron microscopy.
The neural (sensory) retina of the chick is largely occupied by undifferentiated cells within the outer neuroblastic layer from the 5th to 9th days of incubation. This layer is later divided into the inner and outer …

A Study Of The Nickel Catalyzed Rearrangement Of 1,4-Dienes, Harry J. Golden
Theses and Dissertations
Two types of rearrangement are afforded by the reaction of 1,4-dienes with a catalyst formed from tra ns-d i chIoro- bis(tri-n-butyIphosphine)Ni( I I ) and di isobutyI a I urninum chloride. Type I is exemplified by the rearrangement of I,4-pentadiene to 2-methyI - I,3-butadiene. Type II is exemplified by the rearrangement of 3-methyI - I ,4-pentadiene to I,4-hexadienes. The catalyst is thought to be a nickel hydride or its chemical equivalent.
This study was primarily concerned with the type II rearrangement. Two possible routes for the type I I rearrangement were considered. (I) A 1,2-nickel hydride addition to the terminal …
The Effect Of Information And Experience On Preference For Complexity, Stanley Richard Gunn
The Effect Of Information And Experience On Preference For Complexity, Stanley Richard Gunn
Theses and Dissertations
One area of research that has received a great deal of empirical and theoretical attention is preference for complexity. Two major conclusions may be drawn from a survey of the relevant literature in this area. First, there is a greater preference for the intermediate ranges of complexity than for the extreme levels, and secondly, preference for complexity is a function of the interaction of both stimulus and subject variables. The role of stimulus variables in preference for complexity has been repeatedly studied. This is also true of the subject variable "experience," which is usually defined in terms of the subject's …
Growth Stocks, Rates Of Return And Price-Earnings Ratios, Gilbert F. Lembree
Growth Stocks, Rates Of Return And Price-Earnings Ratios, Gilbert F. Lembree
Theses and Dissertations
One of the assumptions that is made in Chapter II of this paper is that the stock market operates without friction. But the market is not frictionless, and this reduces the efficient allocation of capital, which in turn is detrimental to the health of the economy. So, to the extent that friction in capital markets can be reduced, the economy will benefit.
One of the present sources of friction may be due to investors' reluctance to act on the basis of what they know because the tools they have to evaluate their knowledge are limited. The question: "Should high priceearning …
Psychogenic Factors In Menstrual Symptomology, Glen Gruba
Psychogenic Factors In Menstrual Symptomology, Glen Gruba
Theses and Dissertations
In this study correlations were obtained between personality characteristics and menstrual manifestations in order to test the following psychogenic hypotheses regarding the etiology of menstrual symptomatology: (1) dependence, as a personality characteristic, is basic to the elaboration of moderate or severe menstrual symptoms, (2) a psychosomatic process, involving psychic control over somatic functions, underlies certain forms of menstrual symptomatology, and (3) menstrual symptoms, particularly as they are more pronounced, represent exacerbations of prevailing personality patterns.
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ, which contains eight menstrual symptom scales) were administered to 60 female university students …

An Investigation Of The Length Of Observation Necessary To Obtain A Representative Sample Of Clinician-Client Interaction, Beverly A. Laird
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the length of time necessary to obtain a representative sample of clinician-client interaction during a therapy session when using the Analysis of Behaviors of Clinicians (ABC) System to record clinical behavior. Subjects used were ten children receiving articulation and/or language therapy and their student clinicians. All clients were seen on an individual basis. A total of ten fifteen-minute clinician-client sessions were studied. It was concluded that a three-minute period was sufficient to obtain a representative sample of clinician-client interaction during an articulation and/or language therapy session involving student clinicians and children.
Painting And Painting Symbols, James Joseph Hendrickx
Painting And Painting Symbols, James Joseph Hendrickx
Theses and Dissertations
The written part of this project is primarily comprised of short elaborations on my experience, feelings and perceptions, first as a painter, then as a person. It is a description of occurrences which reflect my general level of motion around and within the time of the creative act. These pages also harbor negative feelings for tradition, it has become burdensome and restraining in a reality which is never motionless and therefore never constant, and so is subject to continuous variations.
In short, it involves all the rational and irrational activity of myself as an artist and how environmental circumstance may …
An Investigation Of Perceived And Actual Attitude Agreement, Stimulation Value And Total Friendship, Robert J. Bateen
An Investigation Of Perceived And Actual Attitude Agreement, Stimulation Value And Total Friendship, Robert J. Bateen
Theses and Dissertations
The investigation was designed to explore the relationship between attitude dissimilarity and strength of friendship. It was hypothesized that those who perceived their acquaintance as being high in Stimulation Value (SV) would perceive their acquaintance as more dissimilar from themselves than those perceiving their acquaintance as low in Stimulation Value. Since it was felt that SV is part of Total Friendship, it was predicted that those who had estimated that a strong friendship existed between themselves and their acquaintance would perceive their acquaintance as being less attitudinally similar to- themselves than the pairs who scored low on Total Friendship.
