The Development Of Mechanized Wild Rice Production In Minnesota, Jon N. Efteland
The Development Of Mechanized Wild Rice Production In Minnesota, Jon N. Efteland
Theses and Dissertations
Wild rice is an annual aquatic grass which inhabits many of the shallow lakes and sluggish streams of northeastern North America and is especially abundant in Minnesota. The only source of chis grain in the past was the hand-harvesting of natural stands.
The development of cultivation and harvesting techniques for wild rice during the 1960's has resulted in mechanized endeavors proving economically successful. Extensive bogs and lowlands exist throughout northcentral Minnesota which couj.d be converted into wild rice paddies, thus utilizing acreage which might otherwise remain agriculturally idle.

North Dakota Republicans And The "Revolt" Of The Farmers, 1889, J. W. Bird
North Dakota Republicans And The "Revolt" Of The Farmers, 1889, J. W. Bird
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis responds to Professor Howard R. Lamar's assertion that "farmers" dominated the last territorial legislature, the North Dakota constitutional convention, and the first administration of the state of North Dakota. A closer dating of the stage in the development of Populism in North Dakota at which the farmers in state politics developed a united, conscious movement to achieve Populist goals is needed.
An analysis of new sources suggests different conclusions from those implied by Professor Lamar in his book Dakota Territory 1861-1889 A Study of Frontier Politics. First, the farmers as a class did not form a united faction …
The Temperance Crusade In American Fiction, 1830-1860, David H. Vigeland
The Temperance Crusade In American Fiction, 1830-1860, David H. Vigeland
Theses and Dissertations
The American movement in support of temperance was especially strong from I830 to i860. During these decades, numerous authors used the medium of fiction to convince their readers of the values of abstinence from intoxicants. The purpose of this study is to examine a cross section of this fictional temperance literature in an effort to discover the viewpoints of these writers and to determine the attitudes toward antebellum American society which their works revealed.
In order to investigate more fully the feelings of both the authors and the historically voiceless masses who made their works so popular, such concepts as …

The Effect Of Ascending-Price Electric Power Tariffs On Consumption Of Electricity, James M. Dalglish
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis represents an attempt to evaluate the effects which would result from the inversion of electric power tariff structures. Tariff relationships are presently based upon both the cost and value of service. The unit price for electricity presently decreases as monthly consumption increases.
Electric utilities are required to: (1) supply all reasonable demands for service by those who can pay for it, (2) provide service adequate to the needs of customers, (3) price such service at reasonable rates and without unjust discrimination.
The demand for electricity is a segment of the demand for energy of all types. Growth in …

An Investigation Of The Components Of Platonic And Romantic Heterosexual Relationships, Philip F. Guinsburg
An Investigation Of The Components Of Platonic And Romantic Heterosexual Relationships, Philip F. Guinsburg
Theses and Dissertations
During the past twenty years, heterosexual relationships have been studied extensively by researchers in the field of interpersonal attraction without the attainment of consistent results (Wright, 1968). Wright (1968) stated that there were two methodological problems with this past research which are the treatment of variables used to explain attraction as both the independent and dependent variables in the same study and the use of dyadic indices. Also, Wright (1969) noted that past research has generally not examined heterosexual relationships separately for each sex. Finally, Guinsburg (1970a) found that most research dealing with heterosexual relationships has only examined the "romantic" …

State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson
State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson
Theses and Dissertations
Germinating barley seeds have been shown to take up Bacillus subtilis DNA labelled with 5-bromouracil and tritiated thymidine and retain the DNA in the root system without substantially degrading it. The percentage of bacterial DNA recovered from the total root DNA was independent of the amount of bacterial DNA available for uptake. Four observations indicated the stability of bacterial DNA after uptake into barley roots: (1) the bacterial DNA retained its transforming ability after recovery from the roots; (2) the labelled B. subtilis DNA showed similar CsCl density gradient patterns before uptake and after uptake; (3) most of the radioactivity …
Light And Electron Microscopy Investigation Of Developing Wheat Caryopses Infected By Tilletia, Melvin Douglas Grove
Light And Electron Microscopy Investigation Of Developing Wheat Caryopses Infected By Tilletia, Melvin Douglas Grove
Theses and Dissertations
Caryopses of wheat were studied during infection by Tilletia caries and T. controversa. Initially the pathogens penetrated embryos of the host. After the embryo tissue was consumed by the fungi, endosperm tissue was penetrated and consumed. Initial penetration of endosperm tissue was in localized areas. During infection the fungus mycelium spread intercellularly, but occasionally was seen intracellularly. As the host tissue was consumed teliospores were formed. At maturity a host cell layer 4-6 cells thick remained which retained the mature teliospores. Histochemical studies indicated that carbohydrates and lipids of the host disappeared soon after invasion by the pathogens. Nuclei and …

History Of The Swedish Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints 1905-1973, Carl Erik Johansson
Theses and Dissertations
The study traced major developments in the Swedish Mission. A decided help in this undertaking was the author's own long association with the Mormons in Sweden. The government attempted to prevent Mormon proselyting in the first two decades. This ended in a tacit approval for the Mormons to carry on. The conditions between both world wars induced fairly successful "hold-the-fort" efforts. Youth conferences were especially vital in building a spirit of unity among Swedish Mormons.
The period after the second world war showed several definite trends. Membership increased three-fold to more than 5000. Chapels were acquired. Organizations on the mission …
