The Effects Of Learned Helplessness Upon Appetitive Responding, Thomas R. Foster
The Effects Of Learned Helplessness Upon Appetitive Responding, Thomas R. Foster
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of learned helplessness and its relationship to depression were discussed. It was concluded that if learned helplessness was a valid experimental model for depression it should have detrimental effects on positively reinforced behavior. A number of rats were divided into two yoked groups and these two groups were put on the same food deprivation schedule. The animals were then trained in an aversive situation in a shuttle box. One group received escape training and one group received helplessness training. The yoked pairs received the same mean time of shock exposure. Approximately 24 hours later, both groups were tested …
A Q-Methodological Study Of The Kubler-Ross Stage Theory, Anne M. Metzger
A Q-Methodological Study Of The Kubler-Ross Stage Theory, Anne M. Metzger
Theses and Dissertations
Kubler-Ross (1969) identified a progression through stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance as a completion of the dying process. These stages are encompassed by feelings of hope which extend throughout the course of illness. The present study was designed to investigate the correspondence between the stage changes hypothesized by the Kubler-Ross theory and the perception of the course of illness by seriously ill patients and their spouse. An additional focus of the study was an evaluation of Q-methodology as a research procedure with the terminally ill.
A thirty-six item structured Q-sort was administered on two occasions to …

Dependency Attachment And Exploration: Their Interrelationships In One-Year-Old Children, Elizabeth S. Baraga
Dependency Attachment And Exploration: Their Interrelationships In One-Year-Old Children, Elizabeth S. Baraga
Theses and Dissertations
Attachment and dependency are two important related infant-mother relationships which develop in the first year of life. Attachment has been defined as an affectional bond that one person forms to another specific individual which is both discriminating and enduring. Dependency, on the other hand, has been defined as a class of behaviors learned in the context of the infant's dependency relationship with his mother, reinforced in the course of her care of him and generalized to other caretakers. Operationally, attachment has been defined by proximity- seeking while dependency has been defined by attention-seeking. The purpose of the present study was …
A Comparison Of Conservation Training Procedures And A Proposed Criterion For Diagnosing The Presence Of Conservation Of Weight, David R. Anderson
A Comparison Of Conservation Training Procedures And A Proposed Criterion For Diagnosing The Presence Of Conservation Of Weight, David R. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Sixty first and second grade students were administered Piagetian conservation of weight tasks utilizing materials from the Goldschmid-Bentler Concept Assessment Kit. Ten natural conservers , and fifty nonconservers and partial conservers were identified . The nonconservers and partial conservers were assigned to a no-training control group or one of four training groups where the training procedures were based on invariant quantity principles, reversibility principles, compensation principles, or direct verbal reinforcement. The natural conservers constituted a second control group which did not participate in the training phase of the study . Following training, all subjects were administered a conservation of weight …
The Ticket-Splitter: A New Psephos In The American Electorate, Thomas A. Godzala
The Ticket-Splitter: A New Psephos In The American Electorate, Thomas A. Godzala
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the emergence of a new force in the American electorate: The Ticket-Splitter. The ticket- splitter as a contemporary psephos or voting pebble has filled the ballot box at all election levels during the past two decades with a decision that verifies the sudden and persistent growth of ticket-splitting. Moreover,, this increased ballot-splitting has minimized the strength and influence of the two major political parties. But who actually is this ticket-splitter?
In the past, most voting behavior studies have relied on the self-classification by respondents from surveys in order to obtain the overall political identification of the American …
The Effects Of Manning Level On Behavior Setting Occupants: A Laboratory Experiment, John A. Call
The Effects Of Manning Level On Behavior Setting Occupants: A Laboratory Experiment, John A. Call
Theses and Dissertations
For mare than two decades Roger Barker, Herbert Wright and their associates have been concerned with the habitat, related structural prop erties, and content of human behavior. From their investigations stemmed Barker's theories concerning the subjective and behavioral effects of the greater inherent "claim," or demand for superior occupant performance. This "claim" is hypothesized to be experienced more often in the under manned behavior setting as opposed to the optimally manned behavior set ting. Recently, however, Allan W. Wicker has criticized much of this early research. Wicker concluded that future experimentation dealing with behavior settings would need more precise definitions …

The Effects Of Certain Steroids On The Growth Of Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum, Ching-Bun Paul Chen
The Effects Of Certain Steroids On The Growth Of Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum, Ching-Bun Paul Chen
Theses and Dissertations
The cortex of vertebrate adrenal glands secretes two major groups of hormones--glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids, which have an oxygen atom at carbon number 11, increase the rate of gluconeogenesis and increase the mobilization of lipids in mammals (Turner and Bagnara 1971). At the same time there is a decrease in protein synthesis. This latter effect may be homologous to a decrease in fibroblast growth in culture in the presence of certain corticosteroids (Ruhmann and Berliner 1965). The main function of mineralocorticoids, on the other hand, is to retain sodium ions. They have little or no gluconeogenic activity. Interestingly, however, these …
The Effect Of Recreational Uses On Vegetation And Soil In The Buffalo Campground, Targhee National Forest, Island Park, Idaho, Susan Daines Foster
The Effect Of Recreational Uses On Vegetation And Soil In The Buffalo Campground, Targhee National Forest, Island Park, Idaho, Susan Daines Foster
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of trampling on vegetation and soil, as a result of recreational pressure, was studied in the Buffalo campground of the Targhee National Forest, Idaho. Site deterioration was most evident in the forty-two year old site. The tree stand had matured, but there were few young trees and tree reproduction had been reduced to ten seedlings per acre for Pinus contorta. Only two shrub species were sampled with a combined population of eight individuals per acre. Most of the grass species had been seeded; forbs provided 20% of the ground cover, 13% was bare ground and 71% litter. The …
Ultrastructural Investigations Of The Host-Parasite Interface Of Pumpkin Cotyledons And The Fungus Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum, Mark Edward Richtsteig
Ultrastructural Investigations Of The Host-Parasite Interface Of Pumpkin Cotyledons And The Fungus Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum, Mark Edward Richtsteig
Theses and Dissertations
Pumkin seedlings (Cucurbita maxima) were inoculated with the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary. Center regions of non-infected and infected cotyledons of various lengths were cut into 1 x 2 mm strips and processed for ultrastructural investigations. Complementary portions of opposing non-infected cotyledons were also processed as control tissue, and contained fewer storage products in cells than cotyledons of comparable size from non-infected plants. Young non-infected cells contained distinct lipid bodies, protein bodies and electron dense inlusions which were translocated out of older cells by abundant plasmodesmata. Initally, infected cells became plasmolyzed, followed by breakdown of the cytoplasm. Host cells …
Synthesis And Stereochemistry Of 2,6,10-Triazatricyclo [5.2.1.0⁴ ¹⁰] Decane Derivatives, Susan Elaine Foulger
Synthesis And Stereochemistry Of 2,6,10-Triazatricyclo [5.2.1.0⁴ ¹⁰] Decane Derivatives, Susan Elaine Foulger
Theses and Dissertations
The synthesis and stereochemical aspects of derivatives of the new ring system 2,6,10-triazatricyclo [5.2.1.04,10] decane are discussed. Sythesis of 2-nitro-2-methyl-1,3-disubstitutedaminopropanes, followed by reduction of these compounds to 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-disubstituted aminopropanes afforded the necessary starting materials for a cyclization reaction similar to that resulting in already known 2,6-dioxa-10-azatricyclo [5.2.1.04,10] decanes. Reaction of the triamines with 2,5-hexanedione resulted in 2,6-disubstituted-1,4,7-trimethyl-2,6,10-triazatricyclo [5.2.1.04,10] decanes. The stereochemical aspects of this ring system are interesting from the standpoint of nitrogen inversion barriers on nitrogens 2 and 6. Existence of a high inversion barrier for these nitrogens in shown by isolation of different diastereomers of the tricycle. Methods …
The Effect Of Lead And Zinc On Selenium Poisoning In Mice, Cynthia Joy Call
The Effect Of Lead And Zinc On Selenium Poisoning In Mice, Cynthia Joy Call
Theses and Dissertations
Trace elements, because they are effective in catalytic amounts, must be held in delicate balance with each other as well as with the macronutrients of the diet. Disturbances of these balances result in deficiency and toxicity symptoms. Toxic doses of selenium, lead, and zinc, for example, are known to cause anemia (1, 2, 3, 4) and growth depression (5, 3) in experimental animals.

Habitat Partitioning In A Community Of Passerine Birds, Robert C. Whitmore
Habitat Partitioning In A Community Of Passerine Birds, Robert C. Whitmore
Theses and Dissertations
Habitat partitioning was studied in a community of passerine birds in the Virgin River Valley of southwestern Utah. Ten habitat structure variables were measured for each of 24 species of passerine birds and several multivariate statistical techniques were used to determine the extent of habitat partitioning. Ordinations of species distributions along known environmental gradients were constructed using Principal Component Analysis and Stepwise Discriminant Analysis. Stepwise Discriminant Analysis was also used to determine which habitat variables were important in species separation. It was found that percent canopy cover was the most important variable. Two hundred seventy six pairs of species were …

Analysis Of Macroinvertebrate Samples From Ten Rocky Mountain Streams, Fred A. Mangum
Theses and Dissertations
This study was an attempt to evaluate the effects on ten Rocky Mountain streams from management activities on U.S. Forest Service lands. Macroinvertebrate and water chemistry data were collected. Data analysis methods included: three diversity indices, a numerical taxonomy system of multivariate statistical analysis, numbers and biomass per selected taxa, percent composition per order, and total numbers and biomass. None of the methods of analysis were found to be adequate if used alone, but by using a combination of dendograms, biomass, and numbers data in addition to the diversity indices (SCI and d) stream stress could be detected. Although organic …
Steady State Fluidics: The Static Matching Of Fluidic Amplifiers And Loads, Frank J. Redd
Steady State Fluidics: The Static Matching Of Fluidic Amplifiers And Loads, Frank J. Redd
Theses and Dissertations
"Fluidics" is the title applied to a relatively new technology which is concerned with the control of fluid power and the processing of information through the use of the fluid mechanical properties of the fluid medium itself. The absence of moving parts and the relatively low sensitivity to enviromental conditions suggest the probability that fluidic systems will prove to be faster and more reliable than the mechanically controlled (valves, diaphragms, springs, etc.) fluid systems which they are designed to replace.

Bionomics Of Two Bark Beetles : Genus Chaetophloeus (Coleoptera : Scolytidae), John Wendell Aaron
Bionomics Of Two Bark Beetles : Genus Chaetophloeus (Coleoptera : Scolytidae), John Wendell Aaron
Theses and Dissertations
Shrubs are important as browse and cover for game animals and songbirds in the desert-shrub and chaparral plant communities in the Great Basin (Plummer, 1968). They also play a major role in soil binding and watershed maintenance (Colby and Weissert, 1975). Therefore, an understanding of the agents which affect the health and survival of the shrubs is important. Insects-have a great impact on the health and reproductive capacity of shrubs. Pollinators, defoliators, borers, etc. must be studied and known for proper management.

The Effectiveness Of Different Methods For The Control Of Muscle Tension, Carmen Rita Kaimann
The Effectiveness Of Different Methods For The Control Of Muscle Tension, Carmen Rita Kaimann
Theses and Dissertations
Several methods of training in muscle control are utilized, singly or concurrently, to facilitate tension reduction in both student and clinical populations. Electromyographic methods involving audio and/or visual feedback, verbal instructions in tension- relaxation exercises, and autogenic suggestions are the three most common procedures employed to reduce muscle tension. However, several studies in this area (Paul, 1969 ; Cleaves, 1970; Haynes, 1974) have shown conflicting results regarding the effectiveness of the various methods of muscle control training. Psychologists, such as Green, Green, and Walters (1970) interested in utilizing biofeedback procedures have made clinical applications combining some form of verbal instruction …
A Natural Phonology And Morphophonemics Of Chimalapa Zoque, Lyle M. Knudson Jr.
A Natural Phonology And Morphophonemics Of Chimalapa Zoque, Lyle M. Knudson Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes, by means of a modified natural phonological model, the phonological component of the Chimalapa Zoque language spoken in southern Mexico. An analysis of the processes occurring in the production of Zoque speech has resulted in the conclusion that a system of interrelated hierarchically-ordered rules and processes exist which generate the speech output of a native Zoque speaker. Four distinct sets of phonological rules are described herein. Morphophonemic rules are those applied earlier to an abstract underlying form due to their grammatical conditioning and more radical changes. Following those rules are the careful speech allophonic processes which are …
