Studies Of N⁵, N¹⁰-Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase From Porcine Kidney And Mouse L1210-Induced Tumor Tissues, Purification And Interaction With Antifolates, David W. Jayme Dec 1975

Studies Of N⁵, N¹⁰-Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase From Porcine Kidney And Mouse L1210-Induced Tumor Tissues, Purification And Interaction With Antifolates, David W. Jayme

Theses and Dissertations

Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase has been purified 1000-fold from porcine kidney and 400-fold from mouse L1210-induced tumor tissue by classical methods. The enzyme preparations have been demonstrated to be essentially free of contaminating methionine synthetase and serine transhydroxymethylase activity. Studies of the kinetic properties of the kidney and tumor enzymes, with respect to the reverse reaction using N5-methyl tetrahydrofolate as the variable substrate, have indicated Km values of 2.0 and 2.4 x 10-4 M, respectively. Inhibition of this key branch point enzyme in folate metabolism by a number of antimetabolites indicates that several of these antifolate compounds exhibit enzyme inhibition superior …

The Effect Of Dependency On Acceptance Of Positive And Negative Generalized Personality Interpretations, Richard L. Templeton Dec 1975

The Effect Of Dependency On Acceptance Of Positive And Negative Generalized Personality Interpretations, Richard L. Templeton

Theses and Dissertations

The study examined the relationship between dependency and acceptance of generalized personality interpretations (both positive and negative). It was hypothesized that (1) positive interpretations would be accepted more readily than negative interpretations by both dependent and independent subjects; (2) independents and dependents would not differ in their acceptance of positive interpretations; and (3) independents would accept negative interpretations less readily than would dependents.

Results from two data analyses based on rating scales showed that positive interpretations were rated as significantly more accurate than negative interpretations. A third analysis based on subjects' open-ended responses revealed no differences between subjects who received …

The Effects Of Training In Rapid Reading On The Reading Rate And Comprehension Of Braille And Large Print Readers, Myrna R. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of rapid reading training (as described by Vearl McBride) on the reading rates and comprehension of large print and braille readers. Of specific interest were comparisons among a group taught by McBride and two taught by the researcher under McBride’s tutelage, furthermore, it was a purpose of this study to investigate differences that exist between informal and formal tests given before and after sixteen hours of rapid reading training. Informal testing consisted of oral reporting on individually chosen prose fiction to achieve an estimated "book report" comprehension. This is the …

Calorimetric Determination Of The Interaction Of Cu, Fe, And V Oxides With So₂ And Measurement Of Sulfur (Iv) And Sulfur (Vi) In Particulate Samples From Utah Valley, Douglas F. Cannon

Theses and Dissertations

The adsorption of SO2 by metal oxides suspended in decane were studied by calorimetric titration. The adsorption per surface area decreases in order CuO > Cu2O > Fe2O3 > V2O5. An Andersen High Volume sampler was used to obtain particulate samples from five sites in Utah County. Particulate sulfur (IV) and sulfur (VI) was analyzed by thermometric titration with K2Cr2O7 and by a direct injection enthalpimetric determination using BaCl2. Results show that little oxidation of the S(IV) occurs after it is released from the Kennecott smelter stack.

Human Resource Accounting: An Aid To Managerial Decision Making, Stephen H. Vanderver

Theses and Dissertations

Human Resource Accounting, although not entirely new to the field of accounting, is finding resistance in becoming established. Certain problems must be settled before HRA can be completely accepted by accountants and managers alike.

The many proposals that have emerged, both the traditional approaches and those departing from traditional accounting, have not been fully tested. Only a few instances are reported wherein Human Resource Accounting applications have been attempted. However, much more research and testing will be needed in · order to make HRA a fully acceptable form of accounting. Until such time, Human Resource Accounting can be effectively used …

The Effect Of Altitude On Thyroid Function Of The Uinta Ground Squirrel (Citellus Armatus), Wendell Lee Wells

Theses and Dissertations

Thyroid uptake and distribution of 125I, concentrations of T4 and T3 in serum and thyroids and concentrations of TSH in serum and pituitaries were measured to determine thyroid function of Uinta Ground Squirrels (Citellus armatus) native to 5,400 and 9,000 feet elevations to evaluate alterations in the state of the thyroid due to increased altitude. Uptake of 125I was 60 percent lower by squirrels from 9,000 feet. Incorporation of 125I into T3 was greater at the higher elevation, but absolute thyroid T3 concentrations were similar at both elevations. No significant differences were found in serum T3 concentrations, but squirrels living …

The Effect Of Nitroalkanes On The Electrolytic Oxidation Of Tertiary Butyl Amine And Tertiary Amyl Amine, Karl Lloyd Bergen Aug 1975

The Effect Of Nitroalkanes On The Electrolytic Oxidation Of Tertiary Butyl Amine And Tertiary Amyl Amine, Karl Lloyd Bergen

Theses and Dissertations

The electrolyses of tert.-butyl and tert.-amyl amines were run with a voltage of approximately 3v., as measured across the cell, with and without the presence of 1-2% nitro-tert.-alkane. A graphite anode was used; the supporting electrolyte was NaClO4; the solvent was the reacting amine(s) with 10-20% water to solubilize the NaClO4. The products were azo compounds, azoxy compounds, 1,3-disubstituted ureas and traces of nitroso compounds. In the case of tert.-butyl amine di-tert.-butyl carbodiimide was also shown to be a product. The presence of nitro compounds increased the yields of azoxy and nitroso compounds and decreased the yields of azo compounds. …

Touching In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Cassandra L. Tyson Aug 1975

Touching In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Cassandra L. Tyson

Theses and Dissertations

There is a wide range of opinion among psychotherapists as to the appropriateness of physical contact between therapist and client. Some suggest that touching facilitates the development of the therapeutic relationship; others, however, argue that potentially harmful effects far outweigh possible benefits.

In the present case study, touching was manipulated using an ABA reversal design during each of four initial meetings of a male therapist and female client. Dependent measures included therapist and client immediacy and speech production, and client self-disclosure. Time series data for each dependent measure were examined to determine whether client and/or therapist behavior changed in response …

A Critical Analysis Of Bennett Reimer's Philosphy Of Music Education, James William Hildebrand Aug 1975

A Critical Analysis Of Bennett Reimer's Philosphy Of Music Education, James William Hildebrand

Theses and Dissertations

The study is a critical analysis of Reimer's expressionistic philosophy of music education. The purpose of the study is to determine the ontological nature of the ar-symbol which evolves out of Reimer's philosophy of music and music education. The result is a developmental and evaluative perspective regarding the contemporary music educator as the listener, the performer, and the composer.

This study traces inductively the origins of Reimer's philosophy to Benedetto Croce's concept of the expressionistic mind, John Dewey's concept of an art work, and Susanne K. Langer's concept of the art-symbol. reier synthesizes these origins into three basic concepts: creation, …

The Relationship Between Pulse Rate And Speed As A Measurement Of Performance For Competitive Swimmers, Hugh S. Gordon

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose for this study was to determine the relationship between pulse rate and speed of performance in competitive swimmers and to determine whether the ratio of time/pulse rate was indicative of the level of efficiency for the performance.

The goal of competitive swimmers and coaches was to increase maximum heart rate and decrease swimming time. Since pulse rate was indicative of performance, it was expected that a high level performance would produce a high pulse rate. The effort involved in swimming practice therefore must be maintained at a high level. As a measure of performance efficiency, the best performance …

The Literary Achievement Of Esquire Magazine During The Great Depression, Clarence Adolph Bina Aug 1975

The Literary Achievement Of Esquire Magazine During The Great Depression, Clarence Adolph Bina

Theses and Dissertations

Although Esquire has been in publication for forty-one years, few attempts at serious critical evaluation of its merit as a popular culture magazine or its significance as a literary magazine have been made. Because it was a magazine which confronted the major political, moral, and aesthetic issues of the 1930's and because it established a new type of male entertainment magazine characterized by literary and sexual sophistication, such serious critical evaluation is crucial to an understanding of life and literature of the Great Depression.

For quantitative information I went to the magazine itself, reading every issue from 1933 through 1941. …

The Divorce Process And Psychological Adjustment, Gary R. Hackney Aug 1975

The Divorce Process And Psychological Adjustment, Gary R. Hackney

Theses and Dissertations

Divorce has become more and more prevalent. Despite the fact that the number of divorces is rapidly increasing, scientific researchers have not taken this opportunity to thoroughly study divorce in general and the divorced in particular. At present, the main body of psychological literature in this field has been predominantly focused on the children and their reactions and future adjustment patterns as a result of going through the unfortunate experience of a parental divorce. Although researchers and laymen alike readily agree that the divorce process is also very difficult on the two spouses, no one has actually researched or defined …
