Raptor Temperature Regulation And Energetics, James Arthur Mosher May 1975

Raptor Temperature Regulation And Energetics, James Arthur Mosher

Theses and Dissertations

A review of energetics studies of raptorial species introduces four separate studies of temperature regulation by raptors. Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) nest site selection, as influenced by direction of exposure, is discussed. The data show strong directional preferences to the NNW by southern populations and SSE by northern populations. The tarsometatarsus is shown to have a thermoregulatory function in large falcons, and adaptations of this mechanism to varied habitats are examined. Color phase in Screech Owls (Otus asio) is shown to be related to metabolic differences that may explain the distributions of the color morphs. Development of thermoregulation in Flammulated …

The United States And The Territorial Integrity Of The Russian Empire: An Examination Of The Development Of An American Policy Toward Ukraine, Nov. 1917 - Dec, 1920, Michael J. Buryk

Theses and Dissertations

The period 1917-1920 has a special significance in the history of the Ukrainian nation. It witnessed a sisyphean effort on the part of the Ukrainian people to attain independent statehood. This attempt to secure sovereignity by a vital part of the former Russian Empire met with forceful opposition from within the land of the Tsars and from without. In order for Ukraine to stake her claim among the nations of the world, it was essential her that the various factions within her body politic coalesce so that strong allies could be included to support her cause.

Bench Scale Study Of Fast Fluidization, Subramaniam Natarajan

Theses and Dissertations

The technique of fast fluidization in gas-solid contacting was investigated. Behavior of ground sand (44-150 microns), fluid cracking catalyst (30-100 microns), and lignite (5-75 microns) in dense and fast fluidized conditions were studied.

Pressure drop measurements were made in dense fluidized beds of these particles. Incipient fluidization velocity ranged from 0.033 ft./ sec. to 0.066 ft./sec., depending on the properties of the particles. Increase in bed heights were up to 100 percent of the static bed heights.

Pressure drops and bed densities were measured for different air flows and solid flows during fast fluidization of these materials. Critical velocities of …

Maternal Personality Variables And Their Effect On Interaction With Their One-Year Old Children, David Baraga May 1975

Maternal Personality Variables And Their Effect On Interaction With Their One-Year Old Children, David Baraga

Theses and Dissertations

Attachment behavior is defined as the diversity of behaviors which promote proximity, contact and communication with the figure or figures to whom the child is attached. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that personality traits of the mother influence the manner in which she characteristically relates to her child. These traits, therefore, influence the quality of attachment of the child.

To accomplish this task, thirty-six mothers and their one- year-old children participated in a controlled laboratory situation consisting of eight episodes in which the child alternately played with the mother, with, a stranger, and alone. Observations were made …

Changes In Clients' Perception Of "Curative Factors" During A Short-Term Therapy Group, Jack B. Schaffer May 1975

Changes In Clients' Perception Of "Curative Factors" During A Short-Term Therapy Group, Jack B. Schaffer

Theses and Dissertations

Tlic present study was designed to examine participants' perceptions of specific therapeutic mechanisms which may promote learning or behavior change in therapy groups. Yalom (1970) suggests the possibility that such "curative factors" may be therapeutic at different stages of group development, a general hypothesis which provides the basic framework for this study. Drawing from the theoretical literature on group development (e. g . , Martin and Hill, 1957, Tuckman, 1965), hypotheses were also formulated concerning changes in the perceived importance of specific therapeutic mechanisms as the group develops.

A short form of Yalom's Curative Factors Q-sort was administered on four …

Effects Of Background Music On Interpersonal Immediacy, Roberta Schwab Stephens May 1975

Effects Of Background Music On Interpersonal Immediacy, Roberta Schwab Stephens

Theses and Dissertations

The prosent study was designed to demonstrate the e f fects of background music on immediacy behaviors observed during dyadic interaction. I t was predicted that background music introduced during an ongoing male-female interaction would increase interpersonal immediacy re lat ive to a preceding no-sound baseline. I t was further predicted that immediacy would be enhanced more by background music than by "cont ro l " exposures to white noise.

Six male-female dyads were observed during 36 minutes of continuous interaction. Following an A.-B-A.-C design, the interaction period was divided into four 9-minute segments two baseline segments and two treatment …

Themes, Intentions, And Fog: An Artist's Statement, Robert M. Jankel

Theses and Dissertations

My statement *as an artist expresses itself in chronological order: how I as an artist, over an approximate period of a year and a half, sought to bring meaning into my visual expressions even though I worked in a subjective and abstract manner. First, my paper discusses the importance of being aware of basic themes and intentions, and how ones thoughts and emotions affect the whole visual process. Also, I have asserted that an artist can make general statements which visually communicate on more than one level of consciousness.

The questionnaire was followed up by numerous personal interviews and telephone calls directed mainly at those dealers who are no longer in business. Finally, research was conducted to determine …

Personality Needs And Patterns Of Friendship, Robert J. Bateen May 1975

Personality Needs And Patterns Of Friendship, Robert J. Bateen

Theses and Dissertations

Several approaches to the study of friendship based on Murray’s (1938) need model have been suggested. Winch (1955) proposed that a person who is high on one need would be attracted to another who is high on a complementary need. Izard (1960a) failed to support Winch's hypothesis but found instead that friends tended to have similar needs. Izard suggested that people who were striving for the same goals could engage in mutual need satisfaction and would therefore be attracted.

Since need satisfaction is a theme common to both Winch's and Izard's approaches, the current author suggested an approach which would …

Small Mammal Survey In Two Geographically Separated Aspen Areas, Apichart Thammaruxs Apr 1975

Small Mammal Survey In Two Geographically Separated Aspen Areas, Apichart Thammaruxs

Theses and Dissertations

Small mammal surveys were conducted in two geographically separated aspen areas, in the Chicken Creek Watershed Management Unit, Utah, and Break Neck Flat, Wyoming. Four small mammal species, Peromyscus maniculatus, Clethrionomys gapperi, Zapus princeps and Eutamias minimus were caught most often in both areas of the aspen ecosystem. Peromyscus maniculatus was usually the most abundant animal trapped at all locations indicating the success of this species in aspen communities. The proportion of each species trapped, however, fluctuated, likely in accordance with responses to periodic biotic and abiotic factors. This data will serve as baseline information for the U.S. Forest Service …

The Effects Of Suggestibility And Expectancy On Systematic Desensitization, Dennis L. Johnson Apr 1975

The Effects Of Suggestibility And Expectancy On Systematic Desensitization, Dennis L. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the effects of subject suggestibility and instruction induced expectancies in systematic desensitization. It was hypothesized that subject suggestibility, instruction induced expectancies, and the interaction of suggestibility and expectancies would affect the outcome of systematic desensitization. Students in introductory psychology classes were asked to fill out the Suinn Test Anxiety Behavior Scale (STABS). The Barber Suggestibility Scale (BSS) was later administered to 105 high STABS scorers. High and low BSS scorers were then selected for further participation in the study. High and low suggestibility subjects were randomly assigned to each of the three treatment groups: the high …

Folate Content Of Bacillus Subtilis, David Nelson Hintze Apr 1975

Folate Content Of Bacillus Subtilis, David Nelson Hintze

Theses and Dissertations

Bacillus subtilis can synthesize deoxythymidylate via either of two pathways. The working hypothesis is that the two reactions are very similar, differing only with respect to specificity for the type of folate required as substrate. The folates from B. subtilis were isolated and were determined by gel chromatography to be derivatives of pteroyltriglutamate and pteroyldiglutamate. Kav values for the two folate species are reported. Conjugase treatment revealed no other highly conjugated folates present. It was also observed that mutants deficient in one or the other of the two pathways grow at the same rate as wild-type cells under conditions allowing …

A Comparative Investigation Of Mammalian Serine Transhydroxymethylases, Sanha Panichajakul Apr 1975

A Comparative Investigation Of Mammalian Serine Transhydroxymethylases, Sanha Panichajakul

Theses and Dissertations

Serine transhydroxymethylase was purified one thousand-fold from bovine brain and one hundred and twenty-fold from bovine liver. Both enzymes were yellow due to the presence of the coenzyme pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the liver enzyme showed one major band containing 95% of the protein, while in the case of the brain enzyme two major bands of nearly equal intensity were observable. The specific activity of the crude liver enzyme was about sixty times higher than that of brain. The liver enzyme was also more heat stable than the brain enzyme. The purified enzymes exhibited L-allothreonine and L-threonine aldolase …

Ecology Of The Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo Regalis) In Central Utah Population Dynamics And Nest Site Selection, Neil D. Woffinden

Theses and Dissertations

Research was conducted to determine the effect of prey numbers on the nesting success of the Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis). Conditions associated with nest site selection were also established. Frequent visits were made to active nests to determine clutch sizes, hatching dates and fledging success. Prey remains were collected from nests and analyzed. Kilometer square transects were made throughout the study area in 1974 to determine jackrabbit densities. A drastic decline in numbers of Ferruginous Hawks occurred. The number of young fledged also declined throughout the study while nestling mortality increased. Jackrabbit numbers were high in 1972 and then declined …
