Correlates Of Perceived And Experienced Life Stress, Jerry Allan Boriskin
Correlates Of Perceived And Experienced Life Stress, Jerry Allan Boriskin
Theses and Dissertations
Previous researchers employing objective measures of life stress such as the Social Readjustment Rating Scale have demonstrated an association between life change and illness onset. More recently, because of their apparently superior predictive validity, individualized ratings of stressfullness of life events have been employed. The psychological contributors to perception of life events, as well as psychological correlates to the level of experienced stress, are basically unexplored.
The present study investigated the association of perceived stress and experienced stress with the psychological constructs measured by: the Repression-Sensitization Scale, the Adult Nowicki-Strickland Scale, the Hidden Figures Test, and the Mood Adjective Checklist. …

A Study Of Hermann Hesse's Philosophy Of Education: An Analysis Of His Novel Steppenwolf And Its Relationship To Jung's Individuation Process, Richard Lloyd Anderson
A Study Of Hermann Hesse's Philosophy Of Education: An Analysis Of His Novel Steppenwolf And Its Relationship To Jung's Individuation Process, Richard Lloyd Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
With the rise of an existential-epistemological philosophy of modern education, the writings of the poet-author Hermann Hesse have gained in significance as a philosophical concept. Although Hesse never claimed to be either an existentialist or educator, the theme of his "inward journey to self" recurs in most of his ^-orks and generates a philosophy which parallels many of the epistemological concepts of the existentialists. The essence of Hesse’s inward journey, i.e., the discovery and the articulation of the manifold aspects of the self and its relation with all other existence in the universe, found structural articulation in Jung's process of …
Self-Concept In Children Of Alcoholics, David J. Baraga
Self-Concept In Children Of Alcoholics, David J. Baraga
Theses and Dissertations
The progressive deterioration of an alcohol abuser is well documented. As the alcoholic continues to sink into a deeper dependency on alcohol, he experiences devastating physical and emotional repercussions. Not the least of the repercussions is the gradual breakdown of his family system. As the alcoholic moves toward the bottle, his family moves away from him, with the result that alcoholism ranks as one of the leading causes of broken homes. Alcoholism is double-edged; it affects not only the primary victim but it exerts a heavy toll on the spouse and children as well. Only recently has stress in research …

Population Changes Of North Dakota's Rural Trade Centers, 1960-1970, Charles L. Durrenberger
Theses and Dissertations
Research in trade relationships and hinterland analysis has shown that rural trade centers do not exist in isolation, but exhibit an interdependence with other rural and urban places. The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among trade centers by measuring their potential for growth.
The construct selected for growth analysis examines rural trade center population changes in relation to the size of rural trade centers, distance from urban centers, and the size of neighboring trade centers, both urban and rural. Trade centers having populations greater than 2,500 in 1970, were defined as urban. All trade centers considered were …
The Relationship Between Degree Of Sobriety In Male Alcoholics And Coping Styles Used By Their Wives, Jack B. Schaffer
The Relationship Between Degree Of Sobriety In Male Alcoholics And Coping Styles Used By Their Wives, Jack B. Schaffer
Theses and Dissertations
The present study was designed primarily to study the relationship between modes of coping used by wives of alcoholics and the outcome of their husbands' drinking behavior. Previous research had provided some understanding of the wife's personality, but little controlled research had studied the relationship between the wife's behavior and her husband's drinking. Orford and his associates (Orford and Guthrie, 1968, Orford, et aj_., 1975) provided the initial stimulus for this study by demonstrating that relatively consistent modes of coping could be identified.
However, the Orford, et a]_. study found a minimal relationship between modes of coping and the eventual …

The adult population of three rural Minnesota areas was enumerated providing a sample N of 414. These areas were closely matched in all respects except type of television received. The first area receives only Canadian television signals, the second both United States and Canadian television signals, and the third receives only United States television signals. One adult from each household was interviewed in his/her home. High school youths in corresponding areas were also …
The Development And Standardization Of A Reflective Eye Movement Questionnaire, Barbara Ann Arneson
The Development And Standardization Of A Reflective Eye Movement Questionnaire, Barbara Ann Arneson
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have reported that when people are asked a question requiring reflection, they frequently look briefly to one side or the other before answering. The direction of this reflective eye movement has been shown to be a reliable individual characteristic and has been related to various physiological, intellectual, and personality characteristics. Recent reflective eye movement research has focused more specifically on the relationship between gaze shift directionality and cerebral hemispheric functioning. Results of these studies suggest that direction of eye movements is related to the cognitive content of the reflective questions. However, inconsistencies seem to exist between what the various …

The Sage Creek Mountain Local Fauna Of The Bridger Formation Near Lonetree, Wyoming, Steven W. Barker
The Sage Creek Mountain Local Fauna Of The Bridger Formation Near Lonetree, Wyoming, Steven W. Barker
Theses and Dissertations
The Bridger Formation in the Green River Basin has been divided into two members, the lower Black's Fork member and the upper Twin Buttes member. 'Ihe Black's Fork member is composed of' biostratigraphlc zones A and Band the Twin Buttes member is com-posed of biostratigraphic zones C, D and E. Recent workers have found that zones A and B contain the same fauna and therefore represent just one biostratigraphic zone (McGrew 1971, Robinson 1970). Future studies of the biostratigraphic zones of the Twin Buttes member are necessary to determine if the C, D and E zones are valid. Some are …
High Pressure Liquid Chromatographic Methods For The Separations Of Derivatized Alpha-Keto Acids And Thiamine Phosphate Esters, Bruce Clark Hemming
High Pressure Liquid Chromatographic Methods For The Separations Of Derivatized Alpha-Keto Acids And Thiamine Phosphate Esters, Bruce Clark Hemming
Theses and Dissertations
Improved methods have been developed for separation of a-keto acid derivatives and for thiamine and its phosphate esters. Linear gradient reverse phase chromatography using ion-pair formation provides baseline resolution for a seven-component homologous series of a-keto acid dinitrophenylhydrazones having increasing carbon chain lengths. Branched-chain keto acids can also be separated. Aldehyde derivatives were examined as possible interfering compounds. Peak identification in biological material was confirmed for pyruvate by an enzymic peak shift technique. Monitoring near 365 nm permits low nanogram detection. Preliminary studies of keto acids in biological material illustrate the method's applicability. The same system with slight changes separates …
Plant Dioecy, Ecology, Evolution And Sex Reversal, D. Carl Freeman
Plant Dioecy, Ecology, Evolution And Sex Reversal, D. Carl Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
The distribution of dioecious species among forty-four plant communities of western United States was examined. The dioecious habit is most prevalent in harsh environments. In many communities, over 20 percent of the species and 40 percent of the individuals are dioecious. Dioecy is most common among woody species which are pollinated by wind. It is concluded that inbreeding depression alone is insufficient to account for all known facts concerning dioecy. Disruptive selection acting upon differential success of gametes produced on sites of differing quality appears to have played a major role in producing separate sexed individuals. Dioecious species reported to …
Drosophila Pseudoobscura Of The Great Basin, Monte E. Turner
Drosophila Pseudoobscura Of The Great Basin, Monte E. Turner
Theses and Dissertations
Four Utah populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura from the Wasatch Mountains in Utah were sampled and characterized for third chromosome gene arrangements. The original samples in this area were taken in 1940 and 1950. At that time the populations were essentially monomorphic for the Arrowhead arrangement, with small percentages of Pikes Peak and Chiricahua also found. The current samples show these populations to contain eight third chromosome arrangements; seven previously described (AR, PP, CH, ST, TL, OL, EP) and a newly discovered endemic arrangement (American Fork, AF), with breakpoints 63E and 70D. The frequency of AR had decreased to 25% in …

Bionomics Of A Subterranean Gall Midge (Diptera : Cecidomyiidae) From Artemisia Ludoviciana, Ranasinghe
Theses and Dissertations
Bionomics of a gall midge that emerged from nodulelike structures of herbaceous sage, Artemisia ludoviciana Nutt., was studied as a part of a larger investigation on possible nitrogen fixation by this plant. Infested plants collected from the field were regularly examined in the laboratory where some of them were grown in a liquid nutrient medium. In the laboratory, adult midges were reared from the pupae and induction of infestation was attempted. Apparent nodulation on these plants is caused by the subterranean bud galls of a previously unknown gall midge species, Rhopalomyia subhumilis Gagne. The life history of this midge is …
Millon's Active-Passive And Independent-Dependent Personality Dimensions As Predictors Of Behavior In A Competitive Task, Kenneth M. Carlson
Millon's Active-Passive And Independent-Dependent Personality Dimensions As Predictors Of Behavior In A Competitive Task, Kenneth M. Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
Millon (1969) has attempted to create a single theory of personality from which the major varieties of psychopathology can be derived logically. This personality classification scheme has two dimensions. The first dimension has to do with sources of reinforcement. In Millon's personality system, sources of interpersonal feedback sought by the individual form an INDEPENDENT-DEPENDENT dimension. The second dimension concerns styles of instrumental behavior, or the manner in which an individual seeks to obtain reinforcements (an ACTIVE- PASSIVE dimension). These two dimensions (four sources of reinforcement and two styles of instrumental behavior) combine to describe eight personality patterns forming the basis …

The Synthesis Of Novel Macrocyclic Multidentate Compounds From Dioxodioic Acids (1), R. Elliott Asay
Theses and Dissertations
A series of novel macrocyclic multidentate crown compounds have been prepared from a series of dioxodioic acids. The dioxodioic acids were prepared by treating various oligoethylene glycols or amines with maleic, succinic, citraconic, and glutaric anhydrides. The crown compounds were then synthesized from the dioxodioic acid chlorides obtained from the diacids and various oligoethylene glycols or ethylene diamine.
Real-Time Computer Optimized Scanning Potential Coulometry For Multi-Component Trace Analysis, Norman W. Petty
Real-Time Computer Optimized Scanning Potential Coulometry For Multi-Component Trace Analysis, Norman W. Petty
Theses and Dissertations
The instrumentation and methodology for real-time computer controlled scanning potential coulometry for multi-component trace analysis is described. The sensitivity limit was determined to be 10^-8 F for electrochemically reversible constituents. The sensitivity limit could be extended if measures were taken to compensate for the periodic signal found on the electrolysis current. Non-linear least squares curve fitting methods accurately resolved iron-platinum and silver-iron interferences to give accurate determinations for iron and silver. The resolving capability of this method was tested using theoretically generated scanning potential coulograms. The computer resolved sample constituents with a 1 to 100 concentration ratio and a formal …
A Photochemical Study Of S-Triazolo[4,3-B] Pyridazine And 3-Diazo-4-Oxo-3,4-Dihydroquinoline, John Timothy Carlock
A Photochemical Study Of S-Triazolo[4,3-B] Pyridazine And 3-Diazo-4-Oxo-3,4-Dihydroquinoline, John Timothy Carlock
Theses and Dissertations
When subjected to ultraviolet radiation in the presence of an alkene, s-triazolo[4,3-b]pyridazine (STP) undergoes an unusual 3 + 2 photocycloaddition wherein the alkene adds to the 1 and 8 positions of STP with concommitant N4-N5 bond cleavage yielding 5,6-disubstituted-6,7-dihydro-7-methylene (and 7-cyanomethyl)-5H-pyrrolo[1,2-b]-s-triazoles. Amides and esters of indole-3-carboxylic acid have been synthesized by a novel reaction employing the ultraviolet irradiation of 3-diazo-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinoline (QDA) in the presence of amines or alcohols respectively. QDA, when irradiated, is postulated to undergo an internal Wolff Rearrangement to Indole-3-ketene which can add any amine or alcohol to form the corresponding amide or ester in modest to good …

A Revision Of The Herbaceous Members Of The Genus Atriplex (Chenopodiaceae) For The State Of Utah, K. H. Thorne
Theses and Dissertations
The herbaceous Atriplex species which occur in Utah are revised. This study is based on herbarium specimens and field observations throughout the state. My treatment largely follows that of Rall and Clements (1923). A brief discussion of the history, diagnostic characteristics and phylogeny is given. A descriptive key that includes all taxa has been prepared: type locality, synonyms, general habitat and distribution is reported for each entity. Illustrations and maps are included. One variety is described as new.
The Mammals Of Zion National Park With Emphasis On Ecology And Distribution Of Twelve Species Of Rodents, Paul A. Gardner
The Mammals Of Zion National Park With Emphasis On Ecology And Distribution Of Twelve Species Of Rodents, Paul A. Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Information concerning the mammals of Zion National Park was needed for management purposes and general information. During the summers of 1975 and 1976, mammals observed throughout the park were recorded and habitat structure was measured for each animal at the immediate observation site. Ordinations based on stepwise discriminant analyses of the data on 12 rodent species were constructed and substantiated by Bray-Curtis analyses. The results showed that amounts of cover and boulders contrasted the habitats of Peromyscus eremicus, P. maniculatus, P. crinitus, P. boylii and P. truei. A second group of species--Eutamias minimus, E. umbrinus, Spermophilus variegatus, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, Dipodomys …
