The Buell Military Commission: A Microcosm Of The Union Command Problem, Mark Peine
The Buell Military Commission: A Microcosm Of The Union Command Problem, Mark Peine
Theses and Dissertations
This paper is a study of Union military philosophy during the American Civil War. Its specific purpose is to identify and establish clearly what is classified here as the Union command problem. Simply stated, the command problem was due to the fact that there were two schools of generalship, both inadequate; this meant that top leadership was usually mediocre since, for different reasons, Union commanders had an incomplete idea of war.
The procedure used to study this command problem is, first, to examine its origins in eighteenth century European military theory and then to study its appearance on the battlefield …
The Use Of Paradoxical Anxiety Instructions In An Interview Setting: An Analogue Study, Peter C. Peterson
The Use Of Paradoxical Anxiety Instructions In An Interview Setting: An Analogue Study, Peter C. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
The paradoxical techniques of encouraging and scheduling symptoms have "been used by therapists from a variety of theoretical orientations including communication systems, psychoanalysis, behavior modification, and existentialism. The various techniques have in common the scheduling of problematic behavior tmder specific conditions to promote behavior change. The study examined the effects of paradoxical instructions on state anxiety in an interview ajia- logue setting, The experiment was undertaken to assess the immediate impact of paradoxical instructions in a controlled situation. Existing studies are primarily of the case report variety and are hopelessly confounded with uncontrolled factors such as adjunctive chemotherapy, psychotherapy, and …

The Piano Works Of Franicis Poulenc, Diana Skroch Jewett
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study was a familiarity with Poulenc's com- I positions for piano and a greater understanding of his style of writing for that instrument. To this end, a survey was made of nine elements of his work: (l) form (2) harmony (3) melody (4) tonality (5) rhythm and tempi (6) ornamentation (?) texture (8) dynamics and (9) pedal. The survey is prefaced by a biographical sketch and a study of the influences in Poulenc's music and his stylistic characteristics,
Conclusions reached as a result of this survey can be grouped, into five major areas.
First Conclusion: Poulenc's …
Modality Specific Predicate Usage And Imagery Vividness, Joann C. Russell
Modality Specific Predicate Usage And Imagery Vividness, Joann C. Russell
Theses and Dissertations
Bancller and Grinder (1975, 1976) propose a model oE communication and change which is based on the assumption that the language used by an individual directly reflects the sensory nature of his conscious experience. A preference for some mode(s) over others for representation of experience is purportedly evidenced by relatively more frequent occurrence in the person's speech of predicates specific to the favored mode(s). Further, imagery is said to be more vivid in preferred representational systems.
The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between modality specific predicate usage and vividness of sensory imagery. Subjects were 42 undergraduate students …
Personality Characteristics And Effeciveness Of Paraprofessional Addiction Counselors, James H. Thrower
Personality Characteristics And Effeciveness Of Paraprofessional Addiction Counselors, James H. Thrower
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine how personality traits measured by the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS) are related to the effectiveness of paraprofessional addiction counselors. Thirtyone counselors from three in-patient treatment centers in North Dakota and Minnesota participated in the study. Four measures of effectiveness were used: ratings by peers, rankings by peers, ratings by supervisors, and rankings by supervisors.
A method of pattern analysis, hierarchical classification by generalized distances was used to analyze the data. The results indicate that the most effective paraprofessional addiction counselors score higher on the EPPS scale of Dominance and lower on …
An Investigation Between Field Dependence, Sex Role Identification And Attitudes, Male Versus Female Dominated Career Choice, And Dependency Behavior, Patricia A. Torness
An Investigation Between Field Dependence, Sex Role Identification And Attitudes, Male Versus Female Dominated Career Choice, And Dependency Behavior, Patricia A. Torness
Theses and Dissertations
One rather consistent finding from field dependence studies is that males are more field independent, more articulated in their approach to certain perceptual tasks, than females. It appears that cultural factors and the encouragement of independent behavior are related to the development of field dependence or field independence. If society plays a role in the development of individual differences in field dependence, a change in society such as the present movement toward greater equality in sex roles could possibly influence sex differences in field dependence. The present study was designed as a correlational study to assess sex role identity, attitudes, …
Curriculum Research In Marketing Education, Robert F. Wood
Curriculum Research In Marketing Education, Robert F. Wood
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis deals with an evaluation of the University of North Dakota's marketing program. The evaluators are past marketing, retail merchandising, and distributive education students who graduated from UND during the years 1965 to 1974 and employers of these graduates.
Most graduates believed the objectives of marketing education had been accomplished. However, the graduates and employers of these graduates felt that more emphasis should be placed upon improving the communication and human relation abilities of students.
A majority of the graduates felt that their marketing courses benefited them to some degree and indicated only one course as having little or …
A Comparison Of Attitude Change In Senior Citizen And College Age Subjects, Carl R. Westphal
A Comparison Of Attitude Change In Senior Citizen And College Age Subjects, Carl R. Westphal
Theses and Dissertations
The present study was designed to examine the validity of generally held assumptions of decreased attitudinal flexibility in the aged. A preliminary study preceded the formal study and identified a target attitude, sources of varying credibility, and evaluated self-esteem as a possible confounding variable. Subsequently 40 college age and 40 senior citizen subjects' attitude toward the Equal Rights Amendment were measured by a paper and pencil survey. Two weeks later an anti- E.R.A. attitude change message, attributed to sources of varying age and credibility, was presented and its impact measured by a posttest survey. Follow-up measures were taken three weeks …

Photosynthetic Fractionation Of Oxygen Isotopes, A Study With Elodea Canadensis, Glen E. Martin
Photosynthetic Fractionation Of Oxygen Isotopes, A Study With Elodea Canadensis, Glen E. Martin
Theses and Dissertations
Bubbles of oxygen from Elodea canadensis were collected and found 5 per mil enriched in 0-18. This confirms the results of both Dole and Vinogradov, who found 0-18 enrichment of photosynthetic oxygen relative to its source, i.e. water. Photosynthesis and respiration appear to have produced the Dole effect, i.e. the 22 per mil 0-18 enrichment of atmospheric oxygen relative to ocean water, its probable source. These results are contrary to findings for both UV photolysis and electrolysis of water both evolving oxygen found depleted in 0-18.

Theses and Dissertations
In the San Juan Archipelago, cancer oregonensis (Dana) Rathbun (Fig. 1) is abundant and distributed from the low intertidal zone to -435 m subtidally (Rathbun, 1904). Ricketts and Calvin (1974) refer to c. oregonensis as the most common Cancer species in this area.
Leaf Litter Processing In Aquatic Systems Two Variable Model, Boyd Jay Hanson
Leaf Litter Processing In Aquatic Systems Two Variable Model, Boyd Jay Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
The adequacy of the negative exponential model with one independent variable, days or accumulated time, as a descriptive equation for aquatic leaf litter processing was examined. The effect of adding a second independent variable, degree days or accumulated temperature, to the model was also examined. The two variable negative exponential model was shown to have at least two advantages over the single variable model. The two variable model adequately fits litter processing data for more cases than the single variable model. The expanded model also allows determination of rate coefficients for various temperature levels of the experiment rather than assuming …
Algal Response To A Thermal Effluent : Study Of A Power Station On The Provo River, Utah, Usa, Lorin E. Squires
Algal Response To A Thermal Effluent : Study Of A Power Station On The Provo River, Utah, Usa, Lorin E. Squires
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of a thermal effluent on the attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977. Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed. Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora. The thermal effluent significantly affected the algal flora in a section of river 100 to 135 meters long immediately below the discharge point. Cladophora growth was increased and Hydrurus was absent in this area. In addition, diatom production was often higher and diversity lower than in the rest of the river. Community structure was unique from all other adjacent …

Effects Of Length Of Residence On Resident Adjustment In Nursing Homes, Jeanine Elaine Kotschwar Entingh
Effects Of Length Of Residence On Resident Adjustment In Nursing Homes, Jeanine Elaine Kotschwar Entingh
Theses and Dissertations
Institutionalization is a process which affects 20% of Americans over 65 years. The research in the area has shown that, at least in some cases, this process may have deleterious effects on the elderly. Some suggest that relocation alone can be harmful, and may result in increased mortality or decreased adjustment. Others state that these effects may be moderated or reversed under the proper conditions. Still others propose that a person-situation match is the important factor in adjustment to an institution.
This study is a cross-sectional comparison of people who have lived in a nursing home for under one year. …
Computer Graphics: Conversion Of Contour Line Definitions Into Polygonal Element Mosaics, Thomas W. Sederberg
Computer Graphics: Conversion Of Contour Line Definitions Into Polygonal Element Mosaics, Thomas W. Sederberg
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a disparity between the conventional method of describing topographic surfaces (i.e. contour line definition) and a format of surface description often used in continuous-line computer graphics (i.e. panel definition). The two differ enough that conversion from contours to panels is not a trivial problem. A computer program that performs such a conversion would greatly facilitate continuous tone display of topographical surfaces, or any other surface which is defined by contour lines.
This problem has been addressed by Keppel and alluded to by Fuchs. Keppel's is a highly systematic approach in which he uses graph theory to find …
Steam Navigation On The Red River Of The North 1859-1881, Donald S. Lilleboe
Steam Navigation On The Red River Of The North 1859-1881, Donald S. Lilleboe
Theses and Dissertations
Steam navigation on the Red River of the North began in 1859 when Anson Northup, motivated by a monetary bonus from St. Paul businessmen , placed a steamboat bearing his name upon the river. Navigation continued on a fairly regular seasonal basic between Georgetown and Fort Garry (Winnipeg) for the next three years, highlighted by the appearance of a new vessel, the International, in 1862. Because of low water, Indian problems, and management difficulties, however, the rest of the decade brought years of general lethargy and inconsistency.
In 1870 James J. Hill became directly associated with the St. Paul- Winnipeg …

Human Resource Accounting: A Current Assessment, Luise Correa
Human Resource Accounting: A Current Assessment, Luise Correa
Theses and Dissertations
In the late 60s and early 70s, the human resource accounting concepts were considered to be in a period of development and transition. Many believed that further research was necessary before the concepts were to be considered of significant value to management. A lot of people felt that the concept of recognizing the value of humans in organizations was a sound one. However, we find ourselves in the late 70s and I sense that not too much has been progressed toward furthering our knowledge of the HRA concepts. Prior AFIT work in the subject focused primarily on the methodology of …

The Accumulation And Metabolism Of Triphenyltin Hydroxide (Du-Ter) In Crayfish (Procambarus Clarkii) In A Model Ecosystem, John Gary Hollingshaus
The Accumulation And Metabolism Of Triphenyltin Hydroxide (Du-Ter) In Crayfish (Procambarus Clarkii) In A Model Ecosystem, John Gary Hollingshaus
Theses and Dissertations
Triphenyltin hydroxide (TPTH) appears to be relatively stable in soil. Only minor partitioning into water occurred because of the insolubility of TPTH in water and its adsorption to soil. Residues in the water were also relatively stable. The concentration. of TPTH in the tissues of crayfish exposed to 1.0 ppm of TPTH in the soil was 0.1 ppm or 10% that of the environment. Crayfish exposed to 0.01 ppm of TPTH in the soil had 0.005 ppm TPTH in their tissues or 50% that of the environment. Greater than 80% of the residue in the muscle tissue appeared to be …

Ethionine-Resistant Mutants Of The Filamentous Blue-Green Alga Plectonema Boryanum /|Cby Wayne M. Hentsche, Wayne M. Hentschel
Theses and Dissertations
Ethionine-resistant mutans of Plectonema boryanum have been isolated and partially characterized. The mutant strains exhibit at least 100-fold increase in resistance to L-ethionine. The nature of the change which confers ethionine resistance is not known, but appears to result from the inability of the resistant strains to incorporate ethionine into acid-precipitable material. Initially, ethionine has no effect on the growth rate of the wild-type or the resistant strains, but several hours of exposure to the analog at a concentration greater than 0.5 μg/ml causes a marked inhibition of growth and bleaching in the wild-type cells. The onset of bleaching precedes …

A Comparison Of The Age And Growth Of Yellow Perch, Perca Flavescens (Mitchill) In Lake Audubon And Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, 1978, Steven W. Kelsch
Theses and Dissertations
The age and growth of yellow perch, Perca flavescens (Mitchill), were compared in two lakes which are part of a large Missouri River mainstem reservoir. Forty-five and one hundred and two perch were captured from Lake Sakakawea and Lake Audubon, respectively, by using experimental gill nets and frame fets. Longevity, condition, back- calculated annual growth, and length-weight relationships of the two perch populations were compared.
Studies of length-weight, annual growth, and condition revealed a relatively slow growth rate, reduced longevity, and poor condition in Lake Sakakawea; being on the order of a stunted population. Perch in Lake Audubon lived longer, …

Moral Judgments And Peer Group Cooperation: Are They Related?, Roberta A. Schwab-Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
The present study identified specific observable and measurable behaviors in Deer group interactions that contributed to cooperation among the group members. A determination as to whether groups of children who scored high on a moral judgment measure interacted more cooperatively than groups of children who scored low on the same measure was desired. It was expected that groups of children scoring high on a test of moral judgment would exhibit more behaviors contributing to group cooperation than groups scoring low.
There were two parts to the study: initially, six specific behaviors found in peer group interactions that seemed to contribute …
The Relationship Of Social And Maturational Variables To Development Of Field-Dependence In Preschoolers: A Longitudinal Study, Elizabeth S. Baraga
The Relationship Of Social And Maturational Variables To Development Of Field-Dependence In Preschoolers: A Longitudinal Study, Elizabeth S. Baraga
Theses and Dissertations
This study was an initial attempt to relate theoretically and empirically three heretofore independent developmental concepts— differentiation, attachment and competence. Borrowing from Mahler's thesis of separation-individuation, differentiation is thought to be a process which begins when the child separates himself from mother. It is hypothesized that differentiation begins at about six months within the context of a mother-child symbiotic relationship.
Once the infant has formed initial body boundaries he is then capable of forming a specific bond to his primary caretaker. This mother-child bonding has been labelled attachment by other theorists and is hypothesized to occur at about 9 months. …

Theses and Dissertations
Arches National Park, located in southeastern Utah, lies in a transition zone between the southwestern hot desert and the western cold desert, but it is floristically most similar to the hot desert. The major plant communities are as follows: Juniper-pinyon, blackbrush, grasslands and sand dune association. Other community types occur but occupy very limited areas. All of the communities studied have a high degree of uniqueness and merit recognition as separate entities. Blackbrush showed the greatest overall similarity to other communities and was most similar to the sand dune communities. The hanging gardens were the most distinctive and covered the …
