The Ballades Of Frederic Chopin, Janell E. Brakel
The Ballades Of Frederic Chopin, Janell E. Brakel
Theses and Dissertations
The four Ballades of Chopin occupy a unique position within his output and in the repertory of keyboard music. Although Chopin was not the only composer to utilize the form, he is credited as being the first to adapt the ballade to the piano. His efforts resulted in the creation of a unique type of single-movement piano piece characterized by an inherent narrative quality.
Several individuals and events were influential in shaping the musical personality of Chopin. Adalbert Zwyny and Joseph Elsner provided piano and theory instruction in Chopin’s youth. The virtuosity of Hummel, Paganini, and Field affected Chopin as …

Crisis Marketing: The Mcdonnell Douglas Dc-10, Scott F. March
Crisis Marketing: The Mcdonnell Douglas Dc-10, Scott F. March
Theses and Dissertations
The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft has been plagued by a series of problems throughout its history that has shaken customer confidence and resulted in many cancelled orders. Since the DC-10 represents a large portion of the corporation's revenue, it is essential that the firm continue to sell the aircraft near previously projected rates. This has created a case of crisis marketing for the company.
This study will use the DC-10 case to present a general crisis marketing model. This model will be a step-by-step framework that can be applied to most crisis marketing situations.
By using this model and seeing …

Accounting For Inflation, Bruce M. Kinney
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to condense an abundance of technical accounting literature on the problem of inflation in accounting and how to deal with it in the financial reports of business enterprises, in hopes of presenting an important but difficult subject in a manner that investors and students can use when confronted with inflation adjusted statements.
Chapter I presents an overview of the problem of the problems that have been created by inflation
Chapter II provides a discussion of the specific problems of historical-cost accounting in the inflammatory environment and the distortive effects it has on financial statements. …
Perceptual Focusing And The Sources Of Self-Knowledge, David L. Nash
Perceptual Focusing And The Sources Of Self-Knowledge, David L. Nash
Theses and Dissertations
The present study, a replication and extension of Schoeneman (1981), investigated college students* reports of the sources of self-knowledge as a function of a perceptual focusing-salience hypothesis. Self-awareness manipulations (exposure to a video camera, a mirror, or a no stimulus control condition) were used in an attempt to change the perceptual salience of the sources, hence changing subjects’ self-reports, to test the hypothesis that subjects were responding because of the perceptual salience or availability of sources. Across all three conditions half the subjects completed personally worded questionnaires and half completed impersonally worded ones in order to see if questionnaire wording …
The Father Role: Development Of An Attitude Assessment Instrument, Robert Daniel Olson
The Father Role: Development Of An Attitude Assessment Instrument, Robert Daniel Olson
Theses and Dissertations
This study attempted to create a psychometrically sound assessment instrument to measure fathers' attitudes toward their role as a father. Social learning theory and sex-role theory provided a conceptual framework for viewing the father role. Four aspects of fathering were discerned from the literature: Cl) relationship of fatherhood to child rearing; C2) relationship of fatherhood to the marital dyad and the family as a whole; C3) relationship of fatherhood to the man's self- identity; and (4) relationship of fatherhood to wider societal, cultural and familial influences. Items reflecting each aspect were generated for a questionnaire by interviewing fathers and scanning …

Self-Esteem, Locus Of Control, And Sex-Role Attitudes In Battered Women, Michelle E. Penland
Self-Esteem, Locus Of Control, And Sex-Role Attitudes In Battered Women, Michelle E. Penland
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, there have been numerous approaches to the study of wife abuse, e.g., sociological, psychoanalytic, and environmental. An approach recently suggested by Walker (1977-78, 1978, 1979a, 1980) incorporates the notion of learned helplessness. Her conceptualization of the psychological characteristics of abused women suggests that such women have a traditional attitude toward the female sex-role, a predominantly external locus of control, and low self-esteem. The present investigation was an attempt to validate Walker's model.
Responses to the Attitudes toward Women Scale (AWS), the Rotter Internal-External locus of control scale (RIE), and the Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBI) were gathered …
Initial Settlement Patterns In The Vicinity Of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Kurt Paul Schweigert
Initial Settlement Patterns In The Vicinity Of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Kurt Paul Schweigert
Theses and Dissertations
The concept that the Great Plains environment has altered or repelled basic institutions of the society which settled the region is examined in this thesis by means of evaluation of the initial settlement patterns in an area of east-central North Dakota. The thesis seeks to identify differences in the traditional or chosen exploitive practices of distinct ethnic or national groups within a sample of Euro-American and American Indian settlers, by means of examination of the ecological sub-zones chosen by each group for settlement locations. The non-ecological historical factors of railroad construction, relative time of settlement, and influences of the Indian …

Word-Shortening In Southeastern Tepehuan, Elizabeth R. Willett
Word-Shortening In Southeastern Tepehuan, Elizabeth R. Willett
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a technical description of the phonological rules and processes of Tepehuan, with many examples in the practical orthography. By taking the position that vowel length and open syllables are underlying in SET, I predict accent placement on all forms. In addition, phonetic forms of stems are predicted by a set of rules coordinating with accent. This phonological system has the result of reducing the length of words and highlighting their accent centers.
All final single vowels drop; this reduces the length of the word by one syllable, and makes the penultimate syllable into a closed final syllable. …
The French Of The French Cree (Michif) Language, Mary J. Peske
The French Of The French Cree (Michif) Language, Mary J. Peske
Theses and Dissertations
French Cree is a language with a verb system based primarily on a Plains Cree dialect and with noun phrases stemming almost entirely from a French dialect or dialects. This study focuses on the French portion of the language and its historical origins. To determine these origins, phonological and semantic features that distinguish French Cree French from standard French are presented and compared with modern French of France and of Canada, archaic French dialects of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, and a few other North American French dialects. The considerable amount of literature dealing with the historical development of …
Winter And Spring Staging Ecology Of Mallards In South Central Nebraska, Dennis Gerald Jorde
Winter And Spring Staging Ecology Of Mallards In South Central Nebraska, Dennis Gerald Jorde
Theses and Dissertations
Large numbers of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) winter in or migrate through middle and northern latitudes of the midcontinent region in North America. Although an intensively studied species, the wintering and staging ecology of mallards north of traditional areas has received limited attention, leaving waterfowl administrators with limited information for developing management guidelines for mallard populations during these periods of the year.
Mallard activity patterns, foraging strategy, and physical condition were studied on the Platte River in south central Nebraska from mid-December to early April, 1978-80. Local movements, time budgets, food habits, physiology, and energetics during winter and early spring provided …

Simultaneous Feedback Versus Oral-Written Feedback: A Comparison Of Two Supervisory Procedures, Kim Wigness Williams
Theses and Dissertations
The need for quality supervision in th» field of speech- language pathology has ling been recognized. "There is a lack of information regaiding use of simultaneous feedback as a supervisory approach in clinical training in speech-language pathology. The purpose of this study was to compare the generalization by student clinicians of supervisory training provided under two methods of supervisory feedback, simultaneous feedback and oral-written feedback.
Two qualified, experienced clinical supervisors applied simultaneous supervisory feedback to two clinician-supervisor relationships and oral-written feedback to two other supervisor- clinician relationships. The clinicians were evaluated and trailed in the use of antecedent and subsequent …
Marking Grammatical Relations In Southeastern Tepehuan, Thomas L. Willett
Marking Grammatical Relations In Southeastern Tepehuan, Thomas L. Willett
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes, from a Relational Grammar point of view, the usages of several verb suffixes of Southeastern Tepehuan that deal with the relationships among the central arguments of the predicate of a clause. The verb word in Southeastern Tepehuan contains all the information of tense, aspect, and mode, and is modified by adverbial elements of time, manner, and location. Nouns and pronouns can be used to identify one of the arguments; and conjunctions coordinate the resulting clause with, or subordinate it to, other clauses.
Only two affixes are used to denote person and number of the central arguments (terms) …
