Postmortem Stability Of Drugs In Blood And Tissues, Barry Steven Levine Jan 1982

Postmortem Stability Of Drugs In Blood And Tissues, Barry Steven Levine

Theses and Dissertations

The delay that occurs between specimen acquisition and analysis in clinical and forensic toxicology requires the establishment that no changes in drug concentration have occurred during this timed interval. In this research, severai groups of common drugs were examined for stability in serum, blood and tissues at room temperature and at 4°C. Specifically, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, lidocaine, procainamide and nortriptyline were studied. Decreases were found in the following drugs: chlordiazepoxide, norchlordiazepoxide, demoxepam, and nitrazepam. No changes were found in the other drugs. More detailed work was performed on chlordiazepoxide (CDP). Two breakdown products, demoxepam and nordiazepam (ND) were identified and quantitated. …

The Influence Of Assertiveness Characteristics Of Raters On Perceived Assertiveness In Others, Elise Heffelfinger Labe Sloan

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the perceptions of assertiveness, limited to the situation of ability to refuse requests, by assertive and nonassertive subjects as they rated assertive and nonassertive encoders. Gender differences were also assessed. Subjects were 40 Caucasion male and female undergraduate General Psychology students at a large urban university. Within each gender group there were 10 high-assertive and 10 low-assertive subjects as determined by their scores on the second part of the Conflict Resolution Inventory. The subjects rated videotaped assertive and unassertive encoders on an attractiveness scale, assertiveness scale, and on the Impact Message Inventory, (an interpersonal assessment instrument). …

Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden Jan 1982

Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden

Theses and Dissertations

The interfacial electrochemistry of horse heart cytochrome c was studied at metal and metal oxide electrodes. Sperm whale myoglobin reactions at metal oxide and surface modified electrodes were also investigated. Emphasis was on the measurement and mechanistic interpretation of the heterogeneous electron transfer kinetic parameters for these electrode reactions.

The motivation for this study stems from the fact that some electron transfer proteins, e.g., cytochrome c, transfer electrons heterogeneously in physiological systems. Specific electrodes may, therefore, serve as suitable models for physiological surfaces. Electrode and membrane interfaces are both electrically charged and both have oriented hydration water layers.

The cyclic …

Supramedullary Afferents To The Nucleus Raphe Magnus In The Rat: A Study Using Transcannula Hrp-Gel And Autoradiography Techniques, Susan Mary Carlton Jan 1982

Supramedullary Afferents To The Nucleus Raphe Magnus In The Rat: A Study Using Transcannula Hrp-Gel And Autoradiography Techniques, Susan Mary Carlton

Theses and Dissertations

The nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) is known to play an important role in a descending antinociceptive system through its projections to the spinal cord dorsal horn and trigeminal subnucleus caudalis. Identifying those nuclei which project to NRM is essential in determining other CNS cell groups which could influence analgesic mechanisms by virtue of their connections with NRM.

In an attempt to define NRM afferents, 19 adult Sprague-Dawley rats were stereotaxically implanted with a pellet of HRP gel within NRM and in adjacent areas. A transcannula technique was specifically developed for the subcortical placement of HRP in a gel form. Use …

Synthesis Of 3-(Substituted-Aryl)-1,2,3,4-Oxatriazolium-5-Olates As Potential Hypotensive Agents, Mary Quinn Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a major cause of illness and death in the United States today.1,2 An estimated thirty-six million people suffer from this disease.3 Prolonged hypertension and its attendant strain on various organs may cause heart failure, brain stroke or kidney damage.4 Usually, a pressure of 140/90 mm Hg is taken to be the dividing line between normotension and hypertension.5,6

The hypertensive condition is generally characterized as either primary (essential) hypertension or secondary hypertension.1 A specific cause can be identified in secondary hypertensive patients, such as, pheochromocytoma or adrenal tumor. These causes …

An Evaluation Of The Central Neurotoxic Effects Of Aroclor 1254, A Commercial Mixture Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, In Mice, Diane L. Rosin Jan 1982

An Evaluation Of The Central Neurotoxic Effects Of Aroclor 1254, A Commercial Mixture Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, In Mice, Diane L. Rosin

Theses and Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are industrial compounds whose ubiquitous environmental contamination has been known since the late 1960's. Incidents of human intoxication have been reported, most notably, the "Yusho" incident that affected over 1600 people in Japan in 1968. A broad spectrum of adverse effects are produced by PCBs, including some neurological symptoms. While examination of the toxic effects of PCBs has received much attention, there has been little work on the neurotoxicity of PCBs. The intent of the experiments presented in this thesis is to provide further information on the central neurotoxicity of PCBs in mice.

A commercial mixture of …

Person-Environment Interaction In Nursing Homes For The Elderly, Stan J. Orchowsky Jan 1982

Person-Environment Interaction In Nursing Homes For The Elderly, Stan J. Orchowsky

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a growing interest in recent years in the study of person-environment interaction in the elderly. Several theoretical models have been proposed in the gerontological literature. Each of these models suffers from one or more limitations, including the restriction of requiring that the person and the environment be measured in the same terms, and the difficulty posed by attempting to empirically test the model.

A new model of person-environment interaction in the elderly is proposed here. The model views life satisfaction as the ultimate outcome variable. Feelings of personal control and choice are seen as intervening between life …

Multivariate Analyses Of Mid-Winter Fattening In Two Species Of Passerine Birds, Michael Harold Shelor Jan 1982

Multivariate Analyses Of Mid-Winter Fattening In Two Species Of Passerine Birds, Michael Harold Shelor

Theses and Dissertations

Although the adaptive significance of daily and seasonal fattening of birds has been studied by many investigators (see Odum, 1965; King, 1972; Blem, 1976a), surprisingly little is known about the interactions of proximate and ultimate environmental factors regulating avian lipid levels. An exception is the study by Evans (1969). He found that lipid levels in Yellow Buntings (Emberiza citrinella) were more closely correlated with long-term temperature averages than with temperatures of the day of capture, or the days preceding or following capture. This is an indication that temperature may be more important as an ultimate control of fattening, through natural …

The American Public Art Museum: Formation Of Its Prevailing Attitudes, Marilyn Mars Jan 1982

The American Public Art Museum: Formation Of Its Prevailing Attitudes, Marilyn Mars

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the art museum's growth in America is presented in this thesis to place the development of the public art museum in the proper context. The museum has absorbed its sense of worth and power from the people who shaped its policy and believed in its ability to accomplish positive feats. Its growth as a force in the art world was subtle and studied, but amazingly complete. The museum which doubts its ability to persuade, convince, educate and entertain does not long survive. Examining the people and their attitudes with whom the museums had the most contact and …

Is There A Significant Relationship Between Teacher Credibility And Teacher Effectiveness?, Blake D. Madsen Jan 1982

Is There A Significant Relationship Between Teacher Credibility And Teacher Effectiveness?, Blake D. Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis was designed to determine if a significant relationship exists between credibility and effectiveness in seminary teachers.
Teacher credibility was determined by an adaptation of McCroskey's semantic differential scales used for measuring teacher credibility. Teacher effectiveness was determined by a matching scripture test.
Chi square tests produced significant relationships between teacher credibility and the following: student religiosity, teacher influence and class attitude. The tests also produced significant relationships between teacher effectiveness and these variables: sex, student religiosity, teacher influence and class attitude. These relationships largely were what one would expect. The chi square test also produced a significant relationship …

The Communicational Function Of Wearing Apparel For Lady Missionaries Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Alice W. Buehner Jan 1982

The Communicational Function Of Wearing Apparel For Lady Missionaries Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Alice W. Buehner

Theses and Dissertations

Because the need exists for a professional image among lady missionaries, this thesis will define what knowledge concerning communication of clothing is necessary in order to create a desirable image of professionalism. The term "professional" is derived from available research describing the most appropriate attire for women business executives. In lieu of an experimental study by this author, the interpretation of the professional look is supported by Molloy's extensive research on women's wearing apparel. His research shows that beyond a doubt, the skirted suit and blouse give women "a look of authority and a sense of presence in business." In …

Four Utah Mormon Artists As Authors, Roxie Dale Trimble Jan 1982

Four Utah Mormon Artists As Authors, Roxie Dale Trimble

Theses and Dissertations

In researching the literary and visual art forms of four Utah Mormon artists/authors, considerable evidence supports the prognosis that natural parallels do exist between the written and visual works of artists/authors. Recent as well as past historical data also confirms this hypothesis.

To implement research personal interviews and written questionnaires were submitted. The resultant data compiled supports the prognosis that this parallelism does exist.

Locus-Of-Control In An Interactionist Approach To Behavior, Christopher Jacob Reiss Jan 1982

Locus-Of-Control In An Interactionist Approach To Behavior, Christopher Jacob Reiss

Theses and Dissertations

The impetus for this empirical study is: 1) to provide further construct validity for the I-E scale; and 2) to advance the locus-of-control construct as an important concept in the growing theoretical model of interactionism. The main models in personality psychology are compared and contrasted with interactionism.

The literature on locus-of-control, implicating its importance for understanding the interactionist perspective, is reviewed. Because anxiety and anagram tasks are utilized as person and situation variables in the present study they also are reviewed prior to stating specific hypotheses. 2 The major hypotheses are: 1) that the state anxiety of subjects with scores …

The Development And Application Of A Chronology For American Glass, Ronald William Deiss Dec 1981

The Development And Application Of A Chronology For American Glass, Ronald William Deiss

Theses and Dissertations

This research was concerned with the development of a glass chronology based upon manufacturing and stylistic attributes. In the past glass chronologies have not provided the continuity required for classification development, attribute comparison, and site interpretation results. The emphasis of this chronology is in the origins, developments, and industrial changes in glass technology and stylistic trends focusing on documented processes of formation, lipping, and finishing, trends in color, embossing, pattern, style, function, and maker's marks. These attributes provide relatively accurate date ranges of manufacture contributing to the interpretation of glass assemblages. Applied to two historic period sites in Illinois, this …

Hemisphericity And Flexibility In Problem Solving Strategies In Creative Test Performance, Mark D. Schuler Dec 1981

Hemisphericity And Flexibility In Problem Solving Strategies In Creative Test Performance, Mark D. Schuler

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to provide further data regarding the contribution of hemisphericity to the creative process. A flexibility variable was suggested as another contributing factor in the creative process. A set of four questionnaires yielding seven scores reflecting behavioral, personal preference, and personality indices was used to assess hemisphericity. A concept formation task that would theoretically reflect analytic and holistic processing was developed to assess flexibility in problem solving strategies. The hemisphericity and flexibility measures, along with the creativity measure, were administered to 37 females and 13 males. All subjects were right handed with no familial sinistrality.

The …

Water analyses were completed following standard methods. Parasitic infections were confirmed in 87.3% of the total number examined. The Devils Lake collection included 96 fish from the summer season only, whereas those fish collected from the Souris River contained 20 of each dominant species for all seasons. These samples were structured to examine the seasonality …

The Structure And Rhetorical Effect Of Seven Questions In Koine Greek, Peter E. Unseth Dec 1981

The Structure And Rhetorical Effect Of Seven Questions In Koine Greek, Peter E. Unseth

Theses and Dissertations

Most of the latest work in understanding Koine Greek questions has concerned itself with taxonomies based on the dichotomy between real and rhetorical questions, as epitomized by John Beekman and John Callow (1974). However, some are now pointing out that other factors, beyond the grasp of this taxonomy, enter into questions within conversations.

In an effort to look at these questions in more depth, this paper applies two analytical models to seven questions in Koine Greek. The first is the illocutionary force model, particularly as formalized by John Searle (1977). The second is the rules of Repartee as formulated by …

Ability And Flexibility In Reading Comprehension, Dee Rene Doeling Dec 1981

Ability And Flexibility In Reading Comprehension, Dee Rene Doeling

Theses and Dissertations

The process by which a novice reader becomes a fluent reader is an important area of investigation. Many theoretical models of reading comprehension have been suggested and much research concerning individual differences in reading has been published.

One strategy used by good readers is to spend additional time viewing or reading information which is relevant to their goals or purpose. Additional viewing time of goal-relevant information should lead to superior retention of this information, at the expense of information which is irrelevant to the reader's goals. One way to detect different strategies used by good and poor readers is to …

A Finite Element Computer Model Of The Captive Column, Craig P. Kipp Dec 1981

A Finite Element Computer Model Of The Captive Column, Craig P. Kipp

Theses and Dissertations

This report describes the computerized mathematical modeling of a composite structural assemblage referred to as a "captive column". The captive column is a potentially useful structural member (beam, column, or torsion member) which exhibits a high strength-to-weight ratio. The captive column consists of three basic components: a lightweight core section, the principal load bearing elements referred to as caps, and a filamentous wrap, helically wound around the other two members. Together the three elements act as an integral unit and can be constructed in mul- tigeometrical cross sections and diverse lengths.

A linearly elastic finite element computer model was developed …
