The Effects Of Conceptual Factors On Visual Masking, Damon G. Labarbera May 1982

The Effects Of Conceptual Factors On Visual Masking, Damon G. Labarbera

Theses and Dissertations

Potter (1975, 1976) has shown that visual masks can exert effects both at the level of the icon and at higher levels of processing. Her methodology involved presenting pictures in a sequence at very fast rates, in order to mimic naturalistic saccadic viewing. The present study used similar methodology in order to investigate whether a picture which violates an expectation about pictures in that series exerts more of a masking effect than a picture which coincides with the expectation.

Each of 38 subjects was shown 36 sequences of eight pictures. In nine trials, every picture in the trial was drawn …

Teacher Attitudes Toward The Gifted: A Survey Of Grand Forks Elementary Schools, Carol Senger Korynta May 1982

Teacher Attitudes Toward The Gifted: A Survey Of Grand Forks Elementary Schools, Carol Senger Korynta

Theses and Dissertations

This research was designed to explore the perceptions of educators in regard to the gifted. Research indicates that there are often misconceptions toward the gifted and a fear of elitism. There is an attitude that a specially gifted child can succeed without special services. However, research shows that one out of five high school dropouts are gifted indicating that the gifted do not succeed on their own. These children's needs can be nurtured through accurate identification and the provision of proper environments organized by knowledgeable educators.

A survey, Teacher Attitude Toward Gifted Education, was constructed specifically for use in this …

Arts Education In A Teacher Education Curriculum: A Model Based On Comparative Analysis Of Arts Education Theories, Jean A. L. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

In this study the historical role of the arts in America was briefly traced as well as the history of federal interest in the arts and arts education. The importance of arts education for the individual, the school, and society was stated. Four basic tenets of arts education were derived from research and literature which provided criteria for effective arts activities and strategies. These tenets suggest that arts education (1) should be based on experiential, discovery-based, process-oriented approaches; (2) should be viewed as a developmental activity; (3) should focus on the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of learning; and (4) …

Health Risk Appraisal And Health Promotion Behavior In Young Adults, Diane L. Hanna Jan 1982

Health Risk Appraisal And Health Promotion Behavior In Young Adults, Diane L. Hanna

Theses and Dissertations

Health Risk Appriaisal (HRA) is gaining widespread popularity as a health promotion strategy. Yet there are limited studies to date to assess the impact of HRA on health behavior, particularly among young populations. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of individual HRA results as a stimulus for young adults to pursue health promoting behavior. It was hypothesized that young adults exposed to the results of their personal HRA would demonstrate a significantly higher health habits change score than would young adults given the HRA, but not exposed to its results.

A pretest-posttest, control group design was …

Nuclear Envelope Proteins: Chemical Characteristics And Molecular Interactions Of The Lamins, David Lee Cochran Jan 1982

Nuclear Envelope Proteins: Chemical Characteristics And Molecular Interactions Of The Lamins, David Lee Cochran

Theses and Dissertations

The lamins are a group of proteins in a residual nuclear envelope fraction derived from the nuclear lamina. The absence of specific functional assays for the two predominant species, lamin A and lamin B, has complicated their biochemical characterization. Initial studies reported in this work involved the enzymic cleavage of isolated lamins A and B and another lamina protein with a molecular weight of 61,000-daltons. The results obtained with each of three enzymes indicated strong similarities between the three nuclear envelope proteins.

Further chemical characterization of the lamins has been achieved. Lamins A, B and C have been separated by …

Electrochemical Determination Of The Heterogeneous Electron Transfer Kinetics Of Soluble Spinach Ferredoxin, Charlene D. Crawley Jan 1982

Electrochemical Determination Of The Heterogeneous Electron Transfer Kinetics Of Soluble Spinach Ferredoxin, Charlene D. Crawley

Theses and Dissertations

The application of electrochemical techniques to biological systems has become an attractive method for characterizing the redox and electron transfer behavior of biomacromolecules. This study focuses on the role of soluble spinach ferredoxin (Fd) in photosynthesis where it functions as an electron carrier to membrane bound species in the plant chloroplast. An electrochemical model is used where in Fd now serves as a soluble redox species which undergoes oxidation and reduction via electron transfer at an electrode. This type of model is significant in that both the membrane and electrode reactive sites are characterized by charged bilayer interfacial regions which …

Enflagellation Of Naegleria Fowleri, Terry Wayne Woodworth Jan 1982

Enflagellation Of Naegleria Fowleri, Terry Wayne Woodworth

Theses and Dissertations

Organisms of the genus Naegleria differentiate from feeding, dividing amebae into temporary swimming flagellates when deprived of nutrients. Factors critical for enflagellation of the pathogenic species, N. fowleri, were delineated and optimal conditions established for evoking reproducible conversion of N.fowleri populations. N. fowleri enflagellation differed from that of N. gruberi in its dependence upon growth phase, population density during enflagellation and in the timing and extent of the conversion. N. fowleri amebae from stationary phase cultures grown at 37°C, washed free of medium and suspended in nutrient~free ameba saline, acquired flagella and converted to mature flagellates in a synchronous manner …

Effects Of Pulsed Electric Fields On Mammalian Cell Membranes, Guy K. Smith Jan 1982

Effects Of Pulsed Electric Fields On Mammalian Cell Membranes, Guy K. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of pulsed electric fields on cell membranes were studied to investigate the effects of an electric field, per se, on biological systems, without the densometric and other technical problems associated with other forms of nonionizing radiation. Exposure of mouse splenocytes to a high voltage pulse resulted in an increase in membrane permeability to K+ that was dependent on both the electric field strength and the pulse duration. Exposure to a 2 μsec, 3.0 kV/cm pulse elicited a 50% loss of intracellular K+ indicating that the critical transmembrane potential (Vm) at breakdown was 1.26 volts …

Theses and Dissertations

The Ratcliffe interval in North Dakota is a log marker-defined unit in the Williston Basin. It is Mississippian in age and crosscuts the lower Charles and upper Mission Canyon Formations of the Madison Group. Study of cross-sections, well core, and thinsections show that the Ratcliffe is comprised of six major facies: 1) brachiopod-bryozoan-echinoderm wackestone/packstone, 2) peloid packstone/wackestone, 3) oolite-peloid packstone, 4) laminated mudstone, 5) quartz siltstone packstone, and 6) anhydrite-dolomite mudstone. These facies were deposited in a regressive setting.

The initial deposition consisted mainly of marine limestones. The environment gradually became more restricted and deposition of large amounts of anhydrite …

Carbonate Bodies Within The Basal Swift Formation (Jurassic) Of Northwestern North Dakota, Tina M. Langtry Jan 1982

Carbonate Bodies Within The Basal Swift Formation (Jurassic) Of Northwestern North Dakota, Tina M. Langtry

Theses and Dissertations

The carbonate bodies of the basal Swift Formation (Upper Jurassic) occur as anomalous deflections on a relatively uniform mechanical well log section. The areal distribution, stratigraphic relationships, and genesis of the carbonate bodies were determined by using the gamma ray log, the spontaneous-potential log, the resistivity log suite, and megascopic and microscopic core analysis.

The carbonate bodies of the basal Swift Formation are coarsening upward sequences composed of predominantly sand-sized, recrystallized mollusk grains. These grains were transported by strong bottom cur rents across the irregular sea floor of the shallow epicontinental Jurassic sea, and were deposited under agitated water conditions …

Depositional Environment And Diagenesis, Birdbear Formation (Upper Devonian) Williston Basin, North Dakota, Peter T. Loeffler

Theses and Dissertations

The Birdbear Formation is a subsurface unit that is present throughout North Dakota except where truncated by post-depositional erosion. An angular unconformity is present between the Birdbear and younger strata in areas where the Three Forks Formation does not overlie the Birdbear. An isopach map of the Birdbear, constructed from drill-hole log data, indicates that the formation generally thickens gradually from the erosional limit to a maximum of 119 feet north of the center of the Basin. A structure map o~ the top of the Birdbear shows a basin that reaches 9000 feet below sea level.

The Birdbear is predominantly …
