Design Optimization Of Slider-Crank Mechanisms Subject To Coulomb Bearing Friction, Anthony J. Pascuzzi Aug 1982

Design Optimization Of Slider-Crank Mechanisms Subject To Coulomb Bearing Friction, Anthony J. Pascuzzi

Theses and Dissertations

Optimization techniques are applied to the design of slider-crank mechanisms operating as single acting compressors subject to Coulomb bear ing friction. The dynamic force analysis is performed by the solution of a set of nonlinear equations in dimensionless form. The optimization re sults presented are for various cases of inertia, friction, and external loading.

The optimization procedure developed minimizes a weighted sum of the input work and bearing shear stress by adjusting the mechanism's dimensions. The independent dimensions that are varied are the connecting rod length, the offset, and the three bearing radii. The results of the optimization are different …

Maternal Distance Versus Symbiosis And Toddler-Mother Attachment During The Second Year Of Life, Robert A. Harms Aug 1982

Maternal Distance Versus Symbiosis And Toddler-Mother Attachment During The Second Year Of Life, Robert A. Harms

Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken to relate individual differences along a Mahler-derived dimension of maternal distance-symbiosis to Ainsworth's patterns of infant-mother attachment and to assess cross-sectionally the normative appearance of Mahler's subphase of rapprochement (a restoring of close relations with the mother) in the middle of the second year of life. Sixty mother-toddler pairs, 20 each at the toddler ages of 12, 18, and 24 months evenly divided by sex, were observed in the Ainsworth and Wittig laboratory Strange Situation. Toddlers were classified according to the Ainsworth system into Group A (insecurely attached/ avoidant), Group B (securely attached), and Group C …

The Constituency Of Coya Knutson, 1954, Gretchen Urnes Beito Aug 1982

The Constituency Of Coya Knutson, 1954, Gretchen Urnes Beito

Theses and Dissertations

Women rarely seek political office and even more rarely achieve the office they seek. Only one woman has been elected to Congress from Minnesota or its adjacent states--Coya Knutson from the rural Ninth District in 1954 and 1956. While legal barriers to women's participation in politics have been abolished, personal and institutional barriers remain. How Coya Knutson overcame these obstacles--and the penalties she paid for doing so--is the subject of this paper.

Coya Gjesdal Knutson grew to maturity on a successful North Dakota farm, where she learned the value of hard work and perseverance. After completing four years at Concordia …

Informed Consent In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of Current Practices Among Mental Health Professionals, Mark L. Haugen Aug 1982

Informed Consent In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of Current Practices Among Mental Health Professionals, Mark L. Haugen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the current use of informed consent procedures among a systematic sample of social workers and psychologists, as well as a stratified sample of mental health center directors. A brief questionnaire was constructed which listed thirteen of the informed consent issues suggested by several authors in the literature.

A MANOVA and separate univariate ANOVAs were used to assess differences between individual professional and mental health center director groups. Post-hoc analyses revealed that mental health center directors reportedly address three informed consent issues to a greater extent than either individual professional group. These included …

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. The first purpose of this study was to determine the differences in classroom experiences of four mainstreamed preschool children, two handicapped and two nonhandicapped. To determine these differences, three questions were asked: (1) Do teachers and peers interact differently with handicapped than with nonhandicapped children? (2) Is the use of the physical space in the classroom different for handicapped than for nonhandicapped? (3) What are some of the qualitative differences in the classroom experiences of the handicapped and nonhandicapped children?

The second purpose of this study was to draw out the themes that constituted the differences in experiences. The …

It was the intent of this study to determine the relationships among load strength and incremental lamination thickness change while under a continuous load

The study included: (1) a review of literature of related topics related to wood characteristics and lamination principles, which indicated a lack of information pertaining to small laminated members, (2) the procurement of data for laminated member development of specimens were achieved through a state-of-the-art survey of …

Autoclave Studies Of Lignite Liquefaction, Bruce G. Miller Aug 1982

Autoclave Studies Of Lignite Liquefaction, Bruce G. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of time at reaction temperature on the liquefaction of lignite using hydrogen or synthesis gas was studied. A slurry contain ing 200 grams of moisture-ash-free (MAF) lignite, 100 grams of water, and 400 grams of hydrogenated anthracene oil solvent was fed into the University of North Dakota Time-Sampling Hot-Charge Batch Autoclave System with the gas at an initial pressure of 400 psig.

Oil yields and conversions ranged from 0.9 percent to 35.7 percent and 66.7 percent to 90.6 percent, respectively, increasing as the time at or near the reaction temperature (380-420°C) increased. Higher con versions and greater oil …

Perceptual Precedence In Picture Processing, Steven W. Mann Aug 1982

Perceptual Precedence In Picture Processing, Steven W. Mann

Theses and Dissertations

One important assumption of information processing models of human perception is that such processing occurs as a sequence of events or stages which take place over time. Recent investigations (Navon 1977, 1981) have sug gested that the global aspects of a stimulus are perceived at an earlier stage in the time course of processing than are the local elements of the stimulus. Other studies (Kinchla § Wolfe 1979; Martin 1979; Hoffman 1980) have sug gested that neither global forms nor local elements are necessarily perceived prior to the other structural level, but that other factors such as the size of …

Changing Land Use In The Rural-Urban Fringe: A Case Study Of Southwest Grand Forks, Jane M. Wilson Aug 1982

Changing Land Use In The Rural-Urban Fringe: A Case Study Of Southwest Grand Forks, Jane M. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Between 1954 and 1980 significant changes took place in southwest Grand Forks. The predominant land use in 1954 was cultivated cropland, which covered 80.5 percent of the total study area. By 1980 cropland had declined to 26.7 percent of the total, with urban land uses such as single family residential, strip development and shopping center making significant increases. As the area became urbanized, problems devel oped. In 1979 the English Coulee unexpectedly flooded, damaging homes and the acute care hospital in the study area. In 1981 developers owed $2.4 million in delinquent special assessments.

In order to describe the land …

Consensus Information In The Newspaper Advice Columns, Danel E. Rubanowitz Aug 1982

Consensus Information In The Newspaper Advice Columns, Danel E. Rubanowitz

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the naturalistic use of consis tency, distinctiveness and consensus information, which are the three information variables in Kelley's (1967) covariation model of attribu tion. Newspaper advice columns were used as a naturalistic source of social data.

The first question addressed in this study was whether or not Kelley's (1967) three information variables are ecologically valid. If perceivers in the "real world" actually use covariation information to support or defend their attributions, then it should be possible to reliably locate these pieces of information. If the information is used, it would be possible to examine whether perceivers …

"Over The Horizon Of The Years": Laura Ingalls Wilder And The Little House Books, Janet Spaeth May 1982

"Over The Horizon Of The Years": Laura Ingalls Wilder And The Little House Books, Janet Spaeth

Theses and Dissertations

"'Over the Horizon of the Years': Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House Books" consists of five essays, each of which focuses on an aspect of Wilder's writing which has been overlooked in critical analyses of her writing. The title is taken from the ending of The First Four Years: "'it is better farther on' . . . over the horizon of the years ahead." "Horizon" is a key word in a study of the Little House series, for Wilder had to examine the horizon behind her to write the books, which are autobiographical fiction, while projecting the optimism contained …

A Dialect Analysis Of Hymns And Poems To The Virgin And Christ And Other Religious Poems From Ms. Lambeth 853, Steven A. Weiler May 1982

A Dialect Analysis Of Hymns And Poems To The Virgin And Christ And Other Religious Poems From Ms. Lambeth 853, Steven A. Weiler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a dialect analysis of a select group of hymns and poems to the Virgin and Christ and other religious poems from MS Lambeth 853. It thoroughly examines the phonology of the vowels in words of Old English origin found in the MS and records all these words except for most of the unstressed conjunctions. It restricts examina tion of consonants to those phenomena which are considered conclusive in respect to dialect. It has both a compiled list of all pronoun forms according to person, number, case, and gender and an examination of such forms that are important …

Bromine Chloride Treatment Of Aqueous Gasifier Effluent, Theodore T. Poppke May 1982

Bromine Chloride Treatment Of Aqueous Gasifier Effluent, Theodore T. Poppke

Theses and Dissertations

The feasibility of treating slagging gasifier wastewater with bromine chloride was studied. The aqueous effluent was collected from the spray washer of the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center's slagging fixed-bed gasifier during run RA-94.

It was found that slagging gasifier wastewater is only partially treatable using bromine chloride as the principal treatment step. After a pretreatment scheme consisting of lime addition and ammonia stripping, bromine chloride was unable to reduce the total carbon concentration of the wastewater to acceptable discharge or reuse levels.

Bromine chloride addition as an aqueous solution, a liquid, and a vapor was investigated. Bromine chloride vapor …

Movement And Behavior Of Walleye, Stizostedion Vitruem Vitreum (Mitchell), In Jamestown Reservoir, North Dakota, As Determined By Biotelemetry, Clinton B. Hall

Theses and Dissertations

Radio biotelemetry was used to study the movements and behavior of walleyes in Jamestown Reservoir during the summer of 1980. Four walleyes weighing from 1.7 to 4.4 kg were surgically implanted with radio transmitters. Only one fish could be successfully tracked. It was found that conductivity prevented the reception of radio signals from water deeper than 4.5 m. In 1981, eight walleyes were surgically implanted with ultrasonic transmitters. The ultrasonic transmitters performed as expected. Seven walleyes were successfully tracked throughout the summer. Two of the walleyes appeared to be nomadic and did not form activity areas. Five walleyes formed activity …

Mechanisms Underlying The Digoxin-Quinidine Interaction, Jonathan D. Geiger May 1982

Mechanisms Underlying The Digoxin-Quinidine Interaction, Jonathan D. Geiger

Theses and Dissertations

The clinically relevant interaction between quinidine and digoxin was investigated using unanesthetized and unrestrained guinea pigs for in vivo pharmacokinetic and tissue disposition as well as in vitro [’H]-digoxin binding studies using brain region preparations from dog, guinea pig and rat. Quinidine (3 mg/kg) caused significant elevation of plasma levels of digoxin as early as 5 minutes post-injection and the increase persisted for at least 8 hours. Significant decrease (20%) in the volume of distribution of digoxin was observed in quinidine treated animals. The decreased volume of distribution appeared to be due to displacement of digoxin from tissue stores by …

The Interpretation Of Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment As It Applies To A Philosophy Of Leadership For The Educator/Administrator, Fereshteh Nazerzadeh Kermani Gransar May 1982

The Interpretation Of Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment As It Applies To A Philosophy Of Leadership For The Educator/Administrator, Fereshteh Nazerzadeh Kermani Gransar

Theses and Dissertations

The present study has aimed to explore and uncover educational leadership insights which exist in Feodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. This study involves four major parts: a relatively comprehensive literature review, important aspects of the study areas, main disciplinary concepts, and the general status of the knowledge in this area.

Dostoevsky was fascinated by man. He once wrote: "Man is mystery. This mystery must be solved, and even if you pass your entire life solving it, do not say you have wasted your time. I occupy myself with this mystery, because I want to be a man."1

His master work, …
