The Construct Of Personality And Hemispheric Usage, Steven L. Dawson Aug 1983

The Construct Of Personality And Hemispheric Usage, Steven L. Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

Studies on the differential contributions of the cerebral hemispheres to human experience and behavior have demonstrated that the hemispheres are lateralized for cognitive strategies and, possibly, for emotional valance. Recently researchers have demonstrated that the hemispheres may also be lateralized for certain personality disorders and personality traits. Using lateral eye movements as a measure of hemispheric activation, Dawson, Tucker, and Swenson (in preparation) have shown that certain self-description questionnaires may serve to discriminate subjects who characteristically utilize one hemisphere over the other, regardless of the relative adaptiveness of the cognitive strengths of that hemisphere for the task at hand.

Breeding Ecology And Productivity Of Red-Necked Grebes In Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Manitoba, Kenneth D. De Smet Aug 1983

Breeding Ecology And Productivity Of Red-Necked Grebes In Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Manitoba, Kenneth D. De Smet

Theses and Dissertations

The breeding biology and productivity of the Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena) were studied in Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Manitoba, during 1980 and 1981. Arrival dates ranged from mid-April to early June. Pre-nesting intervals ranged from 11 o 42 days and averaged about 20 days. Egg-laying commenced in early May and extended until mid-July. The average clutch size (4.95 eggs) was much larger than those found in other studies of the Red-necked Grebe in North America.

Although the nest success rate was low (26.2%), most failed pairs (83.5%) initiated at least 1 replacement clutch, and more than one-half of the observed …

Comparison Of Walleye: Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum (Mitchell), Ecology And Biology From Three Discrete Areas Of Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Randy J. Hiltner

Theses and Dissertations

Various aspects of the ecology and biology of the walleye were examined from three discrete areas of Lake Sakakawea during the summer of 1982. Spatial distribution, predator-prey relationships and species association data were procured by simultaneously placing experimental and 0.5 in mesh gill nets at three depth ranges: 0-10 ft, 11-20 ft and 21-40 ft. Temporal distribution data were collected by lifting and resetting the gill nets approximately every six hours. Four time periods were used: 0600-1200 h, 1200-1800 h, 1800-2400 h and 2400-0600 h. Walleye age, growth and food habit data were also collected from the fish caught.

The Role Of Specific Attentional Influences In Anxiety And Perception, Doug G. Heck Aug 1983

The Role Of Specific Attentional Influences In Anxiety And Perception, Doug G. Heck

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the rela tionships between trait anxiety, visual attention and perceptual closure. A neuropsychological model proposed by Pribram and McGuinness (1975) and elaborated by Tucker and Williamson (in press) is used as a basis for the con cepts of attention, arousal, and cognition used in this paper. Specific, lateralized attentional systems, that of Activation and Arousal, are described and implicated in influencing perceptual closure in trait-anxious subjects. It was hypothesized that high trait-anxious subjects would perform less successfully on the closure task than the low trait-anxious subjects would, while exhibiting a higher eye-movement …

The Effect Of Federal Reserve Interest Rates To Real-Estate Volume And Prices, Dennis K. Allen Jul 1983

The Effect Of Federal Reserve Interest Rates To Real-Estate Volume And Prices, Dennis K. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

This paper concerns two premises: One, that higher interest rates cause lower home sales and selling prices, and two, that Minot is typical of the national pattern and is as responsive to interest rate changes. The task to prove the premises was three-fold: First, the literature was accessed to determine the strength of the opinions of the first premise. Second, statistics were gathered from national and local sources and adjusted for conformity and economic reality. Third, the statistics were compared, local to national, both visually and mathematically to determine the alignment of the two statistical sets.

There was overwhelming literary …

A Theoretical Model For Captive Columns In Bending, Michael J. Gilberg May 1983

A Theoretical Model For Captive Columns In Bending, Michael J. Gilberg

Theses and Dissertations

A theoretical model for the determination of the beam stiffness of a captive column loaded as a simple-supported beam with a concentrated midspan load is described. A captive column is a high strength, light-weight composite structural member. Due to the composite nature of a captive column, the deflection due to shear forces, which is neglected in typical beam applications, must be included in the determination of the lateral deflection. The total deflection is obtained by setting the elastic strain energy stored in the captive column equal to the work that is applied to the column. The effects of changes in …

Values And Academic Achievement Among Rural Indian High School Students In North Dakota, Janet Lee Clark May 1983

Values And Academic Achievement Among Rural Indian High School Students In North Dakota, Janet Lee Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Literature relating to American Indian formal education reveals that throughout much of history, the majority culture has stressed assimilation in the educational process. Indian students have been encouraged to give up their values and embrace the values of majority culture members. However, for the majority of Indian people, the goals of assimilation have not been realized. Indians have retained unique cultural values.

This study was designed to systematically investigate the role of differential values in the educational process of rural North Dakota Indian high school students. High school students and their teachers from seven schools were surveyed in group testing …

Client Views On Confidentiality, Stephan Podrygula May 1983

Client Views On Confidentiality, Stephan Podrygula

Theses and Dissertations

This study is part of the growing interest in ethical issues in clinical practice. Confidentiality is of particular concern, being regarded by many mental health professionals as a prerequisite for successful treatment. However, conflicts of interest inevitably arise and confidentiality must be weighed against other values. How to deal with these dilemmas has been a matter of considerable debate among professionals; interestingly, the views of clients on these issues have rarely been investigated.

The purpse of the study was to explore the attitudes and expectations of human service/mental health center clients regarding confidentiality. A 36 item scale, consisting primarily of …

The Relationship Between Integrated Electromyography And Torque At Varying Joint Angles And Intensities Of The Static Contraction Of The Rectus Femoris Muscle In Normal Female Subjects, Mary Lee Metelak Leikas May 1983

The Relationship Between Integrated Electromyography And Torque At Varying Joint Angles And Intensities Of The Static Contraction Of The Rectus Femoris Muscle In Normal Female Subjects, Mary Lee Metelak Leikas

Theses and Dissertations

Sports medicine specialists, researchers, and rehabilitation specialists are frequently concerned with quantifying muscular activity for the purpose of studying muscle function. Two instruments that are currently used are the Cybex II Isokinetic Unit and integrated electromyography (IEMG). The Cybex measures torque and IEMG measures the neuro-muscular activity associated with a contracting muscle.

When measuring muscle function on the Cybex and IEMG, one would not expect linear relationship to exist between the two values if biomechanical, anatomical, and physiological factors are allowed to change. One would expect a linear relationship to exist if these factors were held constant.

The hypotheses were …

Ultrasonic Continuous Wave Spirometer, Todd A. Ell May 1983

Ultrasonic Continuous Wave Spirometer, Todd A. Ell

Theses and Dissertations

There exists a problem of accurately performing spirographic measurements under physical stress situations. Existing systems, which use mechanical structures in the measurement process, have response times that are too slow, or are too bulky to be considered portable.

The proposed system solves these problems and has a number of attractive characteristics. The system uses relatively inexpensive solid state electronic components which implies a minimal of mechanical parts; portability; and a linear, fast response time.

The system presented in this thesis determines the velocity and temperature fluctuations of the human breath by measuring the difference and sum of the transit times …

Perceptual Styles Of Left- And Right-Lookers, Joann C. Russell May 1983

Perceptual Styles Of Left- And Right-Lookers, Joann C. Russell

Theses and Dissertations

The left and right hemispheres have unique modes of processing data: the former verbal-analytic, the latter spatial-holistic. Dominant direction of lateral eye movement on answering reflective questions has been interpreted as indicating differential contralateral hemispheric activation and, by inference, predominant reliance on one or the other mode.

This study tested the hypothesis that neurological organization of the brain underlies and unifies individual perceptual, cognitive, and personality style differences. Right-lookers were expected to be more obsessive-compulsive and to obtain a predicted pattern of test scores congruent with left hemispheric characteristics, while left-lookers were expected to be more hysteroid and to obtain …
