Synthesis Of Style In Gabriel Faure's Preludes For Piano, Jane A. Lien May 1983

Synthesis Of Style In Gabriel Faure's Preludes For Piano, Jane A. Lien

Theses and Dissertations

Gabriel Faure occupies an important position in the history of French music. Through his conscious rejection of the influences of German romanticism he was instrumental in the recovery of artis tic standards which are thought of as typically French— logic, clar ity, moderation, balance— qualities which link Faure to a long line of French classical tradition. His stature in this respect is indis putable. His importance as a transitional figure in the overall course of music history is less commonly recognized. Bridging the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he synthesized a traditional, yet progressive, musical style.

Faure's Preludes for Piano are …

Hemispheric Laterality And Cognitive Style, Christine J. Kuchler May 1983

Hemispheric Laterality And Cognitive Style, Christine J. Kuchler

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to determine the nature and degree of relationship between cerebral "hemispheric style" and several traditional dimensions of "cognitive style." A large battery of laterality preference, cognitive style, verbal and nonverbal ability, and selected additional tests was administered to 97 (52 female, 45 male) right-handed undergraduate volunteers, with subsequent analysis of relationships among the measures by simple correlation, factor analysis, and multiple regression methods.

Laterality measures included the Zenhausern, Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire, and a lateral eye movement observation measure. Data analyses utilized individual laterality test scores as well as a composite "laterality index." Eleven cognitive …

The Prairie Campaign And Kennedy Caucus: A Study Of Amateur Groups In North Dakota, Curt Togstad May 1983

The Prairie Campaign And Kennedy Caucus: A Study Of Amateur Groups In North Dakota, Curt Togstad

Theses and Dissertations

The problem examined in this thesis is the one of whether or not the Prairie Campaign for Economic Democracy and Kennedy caucus members at the 1980 State Democratic-NPL Convention were political amateurs who placed issues and ideology above winning. The Prairie Campaign for Economic Democracy and the Kennedy for President Caucuses were statewide organizations. In this thesis the caucus members are hypoth esized to be amateurs who, when compared to the convention delegates as a whole, had the following characteristics: 1. Were more likely to be under 35 2. Had higher education 3. Perceived issues differently 4. Had lower party …

An Investigation Of Semantic Invariance In Human Speech, David Burton Tarr May 1983

An Investigation Of Semantic Invariance In Human Speech, David Burton Tarr

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation addresses the hypothesis of phonetic symbolism in human speech. As a psycholinguistic and epistemological concept, the phonetic symbol is understood to be a structural a priori in sound which correlates with the semantic properties of physiognomic, muscular tension. An extension of this hypothesis is the assumption that phonemes without conventional meaning in a language can approximate semantic equivalence of ordinary words under appropriate experimental conditions.

This dissertation explores the psychodynamic parameters of phonetic symbol access. Specifically, it makes use of a variety of clinical and experimental tools to tap instinctual processes which could conceivably contribute to phonetic …

The Sex Typed Activities Test: A Supplementary Measure Of Masculine And Feminine Dimensions Of Personality, Steven Harold Weaver May 1983

The Sex Typed Activities Test: A Supplementary Measure Of Masculine And Feminine Dimensions Of Personality, Steven Harold Weaver

Theses and Dissertations

This paper details the development of a personality measure which differentiates among individuals on the basis of their self-reported comfort with a variety of day to day activities. These activities were systematically pre-se lected to be either masculine or feminine in nature. The history of masculinity and femininity measurement is exam ined, and the trend toward increasingly specific measurement devices traced. In line with an emerging multi-dimensional model of masculinity and femininity, it is suggested that a paper and pencil measure of two separate masculine and femi nine dimensions composed of items that are behavioral in terms of content would …

Development Of A Computer-Aided Analysis Package For Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, William E. Warkentin Apr 1983

Development Of A Computer-Aided Analysis Package For Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, William E. Warkentin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an interactive computer-aided analysis package for solving linear elastic fracture mechanics problems. CHILES 2 (an existing finite element fracture mechanics program) was modified to be interactive. The modified program is named CHILES.BYU and is used in conjunction with QMESH.BYU and MOVIE.BYU to form the total software package. An analysis of glass ceramics and glass ceramic/metal interfaces was performed demonstrating the capabilities of the package. This study demonstrates the usefulness of an interactive package of computer programs to allow an engineer to rapidly investigate different crack configurations.

Scrubs.Byu A Two Dimensional Finite Element Package For Continuum Analysis Using Quadratic Isoparametric Elements, Michael Glenn Long

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops a two dimensional, axisymmetric finite element package for solving continuum problems including rubbleization subsidence and nonlinear fracture mechanics. This package includes both a user friendly preprocessor, PRESCRUBS.BYU, and a versatile analysis code SCRUBS.BYU. PRESCRUBS.BYU systematically creates the data file necessary to run SCRUBS.BYU. SCRUBS.BYU provides many options of nonlinear static analysis using either linear or quadratic isoparametric finite elements. Sample problems are presented that demonstrate the capabilities of this package.

Provo In The Jazz Age: A Case Study, Gary C. Kunz Jan 1983

Provo In The Jazz Age: A Case Study, Gary C. Kunz

Theses and Dissertations

Many historians have suggested in their writings that much of the social behavior that made the decade of the twenties unique had their origins in the urban centers, leaving the small towns taking no active participation in the Jazz Age.

The purpose of this paper is to show that Provo, Utah, a small, isolated community took a very active part in the Jazz Age, contrary to what has been suggested. There was a considerable quantity of drunkenness, bootlegging, wild dancing and partying in Provo during the decade, much more than historians suggest there should have been in a community the …

Interactions Between Murine Peritoneal Macrophages And Naegleria Fowleri, Leigh Ann Belcher Jan 1983

Interactions Between Murine Peritoneal Macrophages And Naegleria Fowleri, Leigh Ann Belcher

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, we have examined the differences among Corynebacterium parvum-activated, thioglycollate-elicited, and resident macrophages from (C57BL/6 X C3H)F1 mice utilizing two microcytotoxicity assays. Macrophage and Naegleria fowleri were interchangeably employed as effector and target cells. To assess the ability of the macrophage to lyse N. fowleri, the amoebae were labeled with 5 μCi of 3H-uridine per 5 x 10^5 cells for 18 h prior to co-culturing with adherent macrophage monolayers. Although the macrophage-induced lysis was density and time dependent, C. parvum macrophages consistently demonstrated an increased cytotoxic response to N. fowleri after 24 h co-incubation at a 10:1 …

A Nutritional And Morphological Study Of Two Cyanobacteria Free Azolla Ferns, Michael Paul Bonner Jan 1983

A Nutritional And Morphological Study Of Two Cyanobacteria Free Azolla Ferns, Michael Paul Bonner

Theses and Dissertations

The symbiotic association between the aquatic water fern Azolla and its symbiont, Anabaena azollae Straus. has been extensively studied in the past ten years. The cyanobacteria has received much of the attention due to its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen while the fern free of the cyanobiont has been somewhat neglected. The purpose of this research was to determine the nutritional requirements of the cyanobacteria free (CBF) ferns and study the morphology of the leaves and branches of these CBF ferns.

Azolla filiculoides and Azolla pinnata were freed of the cyanobiont using the surface sterilization technique adopted from Duckett, et …

Synthesis Of Mesoionic Nucleosides As Potential Antineoplastic Agents, Shanaz Mohammedali Tejani Jan 1983

Synthesis Of Mesoionic Nucleosides As Potential Antineoplastic Agents, Shanaz Mohammedali Tejani

Theses and Dissertations

During the past few decades, analogs of purine nucleosides have been described that are modified either in the heterocyclic base, sugar moiety or both, and many of these modified nucleosides display antiviral and/or antineoplastic activity. The Class II mesoionic purinones are isosteric with their non~mesoionic purinone counterparts. It is conceivable that the mesoionic purinone nucleosides might constitute an entirely novel class of modified nucleosides with potential chemotherapeutic activity. That the mesoionic heterobases are bioisosteric as well as isosteric with non-mesoionic purinones was realized by demonstrating that certain mesoionic xanthine derivatives, such as Anhydro-8-ethylw-5-hydroxy-7-oxo-l,3,4-thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidinium hydroxide and Anhydro-6-p-chlorobenzyl-8-ethyl-5-hydroxy-7-oxo—l,3,4—thiadiazolo [3,2-a]pyrimidinium hydroxide were comparable …

A mail survey resulted in a useful return of 88 questionnaires, including 81 females.

The Bem Sex Role Inventory was utilized to measure sex role self concept; masculinity and femininity are viewed as two independent dimensions present in every individual. Role conflict was measured by …

Poe Per Se, Robert Williamson Storrs Iv Jan 1983

Poe Per Se, Robert Williamson Storrs Iv

Theses and Dissertations

There are four elements involved in this production of Poe per se which make it interesting and suitable as a thesis: the actor, the subject, the format, and the audience. I will discuss the problems posed by each and the methods of attack I will pursue to those problems. I will then describe the evolution of the script from research through performance. My conclusion will be an assessment of the success of the script in solving my acting problems.

Verging Gardens, Jeffrey Ruggles Jan 1983

Verging Gardens, Jeffrey Ruggles

Theses and Dissertations

Webster's gives as an archaic meaning for the verb design "to indicate with a distinctive mark, sign, or name." For the kind of photograph which is essentially taken, not made, the idea of indicating is more appropriate than concepts of building up from a blank sheet of paper. The correct exclamation when this photographer thinks a success has been completed is "Eureka!": "I have found it!"

This paper identifies the topographic landscape as a type of photographic practice, examines the characteristics of the topographic landscape, and traces its development. The concepts of "density" and "the garden" in the topographic landscape …
