The Role Of Salicylates On Thermoregulation And Respiration On The Male Human During Exercise, Riad Mahayni
The Role Of Salicylates On Thermoregulation And Respiration On The Male Human During Exercise, Riad Mahayni
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) upon thermoregulation and respiration. Eight adult males whose ages ranged from 19 to 33 years were asked to engage in this study. The respiratory parameters included oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, respiratory quotient, minute ventilation, and breathing frequency. The thermoregulatory parameters included rectal temperatures and total skin temperatures. Before experimentation commenced, each subject underwent a maximum oxygen consumption test (VO2 max) to determine 60% of their VO2 max. Each of the eight subjects walked at 60% of their VO2 max up an appropriate …
Dignity: A Psychological Construct, Walter Watson Tunstall
Dignity: A Psychological Construct, Walter Watson Tunstall
Theses and Dissertations
A theory was presented which argued that dignity or a personal sense of worth is a distinct dimension of the self concept, and it can be distinguished from self-esteem, a related but different dimension of the self-structure. The theory presented an explanation for how a personal sense of worth originates, and why individuals may differ on the degree to which they feel worthy. An internally consistant, alpha= .85, temporally stable, r = .64, 25 item self-report measure of individual differences in dignity, defined as a social process of mutual and reciprocal validation between interactants, was constructed. The Personal Worth Inventory …
A Descriptive Study Of The Relationship Of Teaching Level And Subject Area Assignment To Teachers' Attitudes Toward Critical Thinking, Patricia Barnes Walker
A Descriptive Study Of The Relationship Of Teaching Level And Subject Area Assignment To Teachers' Attitudes Toward Critical Thinking, Patricia Barnes Walker
Theses and Dissertations
This study describes teachers' attitudes toward critical thinking: their definitions of critical thinking, the importance of critical thinking in their daily lives, how important it is to them that their students use critical thinking in class, whose responsibility it is to teach critical thinking, and who or what has influenced their attitudes about critical thinking. Each of these aspects of critical thinking was analyzed by teaching level (elementary, middle, or high school) and by subject area assignment (English, social studies, mathematics, science, and "other") to determine if relationships exist between these attributes and attitudes toward critical thinking.
The population sample …
The Incidence Of Postoperative Retching And Vomiting In The Adult Patient Undergoing Abdominal Surgery Following Intraoperative Administration Of Droperidol, Gary L. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
The complication of postoperative nausea and vomiting is still one of the most common today. The potential for secondary complications associated with retching and vomiting such as aspiration pneumonitis strain of suture line with possible hemorrhage, and potential fluid and electrolyte imbalance makes prevention of retching and vomiting a primary concern in the management of the postoperative patient.
The use of antiemetic drugs to prevent or control postoperative nausea and vomiting is a long-standing practice. Droperidol, an antiemetic, routinely used since being introduced in 1963, has been found to be successful in treating postoperative nausea and vomiting. This study examines …
Proliferation Of Schwann Cells Induced By Axolemmal And Myelin Membranes, Michael Paul Dinneen
Proliferation Of Schwann Cells Induced By Axolemmal And Myelin Membranes, Michael Paul Dinneen
Theses and Dissertations
Purified Schwann cells were cultured from neonatal rat sciatic nerve using a modification of the method of Brockes (Brockes, J.P. et al, Brain Res. 165(1979) 105-118). Schwann cells and contaminating fibroblasts were unambiguously identified using fluorescent antibodies to 2'3' cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase and the thy 1.1 antigen respectively. The Schwann cells were quiescent unless challenged with mitogens, They proliferated rapidly in response to the soluable mitogen, cholera toxin, or to membrane fractions from rat CNS or PNS, prepared by the method of DeVries (DeVries, G.H., J Neurochem, 40 (1983) 1709-1717). Mitogenic activity was present in both axolemmal and myelin enriched …
Alterations In Blood-Brain Barrier Function Following Acute Hypertension: Comparison Of The Blood-To-Brain Transfer Of Horseradish Peroxidase With That Of Alpha-Aminoisobutyric Acid, Mary Draper Bennett Ellison
Alterations In Blood-Brain Barrier Function Following Acute Hypertension: Comparison Of The Blood-To-Brain Transfer Of Horseradish Peroxidase With That Of Alpha-Aminoisobutyric Acid, Mary Draper Bennett Ellison
Theses and Dissertations
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) selectively restricts the blood-to-brain passage of many solutes owing to unique properties of cerebrovascular endothelial cell membranes. This selective blood/brain interface participates in the maintenance of brain homeostasis by controlling nutrient, gas, and fluid exchange necessary for brain function. Normal BBB function can be altered under various pathological and experimental conditions, allowing the transfer into brain parenchyma of blood-borne solutes normally excluded. To date, experimental study of the BBB has been accomplished primarily through the use of two different methodological approaches. Some investigators have focused on the barrier's morphological correlates and its morphopathological alteration under various …
Dissection Of Microphage Activation Using T Cell Hybridoma Derived Lymphokines, William S. Futch Jr.
Dissection Of Microphage Activation Using T Cell Hybridoma Derived Lymphokines, William S. Futch Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Macrophage phenotype/function can be modulated by various T-cell lymphokines (LK). The alteration of macrophage phenotype is a result of LK concentration, duration of exposure, and the level of macrophage activation when obtained from in vivo sources through elicitation by either sterile irritants or immune cellular mechanisms. In order to dissect macrophage activation into discrete signals T cell hybridomas were constructed by fusing HAT sensitive BW5147 cells with nylon-wool purified, con A stimulated T cells. The resulting T cell hybrids were screened for their ability to: (a) protect macrophages from the cytopathic effect of Naegleria; (b) induce class II MHC gene …

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of needle play in reducing pre-school children's anxiety concerning injections. The Pre-school Observational Scale of Anxiety was used to measure the degree of anxiety experienced by the children. The hypothesis stated that there would be a significant decrease in anxiety of pre-school children who participated in needle play as compared with the anxiety scores of pre-school children who did not participate in needle play. The sample consisted of 20 pre-school children who were receiving routine health care and injections for immunizations or PPDs (purified protein derivative) at a county health department …
Warren Stone Snow, A Man In Between: The Biography Of A Mormon Defender, John A. Peterson
Warren Stone Snow, A Man In Between: The Biography Of A Mormon Defender, John A. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Warren Stone Snow was an early convert to the LDS church who during the Church's first four decades was often involved in defensive roles as Mormonism encountered various conflicts on the American frontier. While he protected the lives of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and defended Illinois Saints from houseburning mobs and took a leading role in the Battle of Nauvoo, his greatest defensive contributions took place after the Mormons settled in Utah. As commander of the Sanpete Military District, he was one of the leading figures in Mormon defensive efforts during the Utah War in 1857 and later as …
The Mormon Waldensians, Diane Stokoe
The Mormon Waldensians, Diane Stokoe
Theses and Dissertations
The Waldensians are ancient Protestant Sectarians who have inhabited the Piedmont Region of the Cottian Alps for centuries. They claim to be the oldest Protestant Church in the world. Having survived 700 years of persecution, the Waldensians finally achieved religious liberty in 1848. Two years later Mormon church leader Lorenzo Snow and some other Elders entered the Protestant valleys on a proselyting mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One hundred-eighty-seven Waldensians were converted to Mormonism. Twenty years later, one-third of these Mormon Waldensians had been excommunicated, one-third had emigrated to Utah and one-third became inactive or …
Elder Stephen L. Richards On Peace And War: An Examination Of Elder Richards' Views On The Causes Of War And His Prescription For Peace, Based On The Analytical Framework Contained In Kenneth N. Waltz' Man, The State And War, Gordon John Stirling
Theses and Dissertations
In Man, the State and War, Kenneth N. Waltz claims that for a peace prescription to be valid, it must be based on a proper view of the causes of war. Waltz analyzes the validity of three basic causes of war: man himself, the characteristics of the nation-state, and the international system.
I have examined the views of Elder Stephen L Richards on peace and war in the context of the Waltz framework. Elders Richards believed that the failings of men were the primary causes of war. His prescription for peace was widespread acceptance of the Gospel. He disagreed …
Early Mormon Millenarianism: Another Look, Grant Underwood
Early Mormon Millenarianism: Another Look, Grant Underwood
Theses and Dissertations
Whether in its earliest or its most recent formulations, Mormon millennialism is essentially premillennial. At no time can it be considered postmillennial or a millennial. Along with a millenarian ideology, Latter-day Saints of the 1830s maintained a polarized perception of society and salvation. Apparently, it was not until the 1840s that Mormons began to explore the millennial implications of the "Vision" of the three degrees of glory. Other strands of thought unique to the earliest years of Mormonism are also considered. Furthermore, it is shown how millenarianism informed Mormon perceptions of Native Americans, missionary work, persecution, the Apostasy, and Zion. …
Incremental Repetition Within J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth: Shadow, Light, And Silmaril Within Mortal-Immortal Marriages, Nancy Lynn Hayes
Incremental Repetition Within J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth: Shadow, Light, And Silmaril Within Mortal-Immortal Marriages, Nancy Lynn Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the use of incremental repetition to emphasize points of both syntactic and thematic importance within the Middle-earth works of J.R.R. Tolkien. By studying three specific terms: shadow, light, and Silmaril, and how their meaning changes with each occurance, it is possible to see how much Tolkien's mythology owes to his syntactic structure.
Through my research, I have concluded that not only was Tolkien's use of incremental repetition deliberate, but that it was also an essential part of his skill in creating his mythology.

Influence Of Physically Attractive People On Consumers In Advertising, Rick W. Caylor
Influence Of Physically Attractive People On Consumers In Advertising, Rick W. Caylor
Theses and Dissertations
When meeting another person for the first time, the most prominent factor in formulating an impression is the person's physical attractiveness. It has been stated that "A person's physical appearance, along with his sexual identity, is the personal characteristic most obvious and accessible to others in the social interaction" (Dion, Berscheid, and Walster 1972). There are numerous studies in this area and they will be examined and analyzed with respect to their immediate and long-term implications within the marketing and advertising arenas of the business world.

Ormsby Macknight Mitchel And The Railroad: A Study Of The Significance Of Lines Of Communications In The Civil War, 1861-1862, Michael Robert Terry
Ormsby Macknight Mitchel And The Railroad: A Study Of The Significance Of Lines Of Communications In The Civil War, 1861-1862, Michael Robert Terry
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes a minor campaign of the American Civil War, but one which illustrates the importance of the railroad, as a line of communications, to strategy. In the Spring of 1862, the Union Army in the west concentrated at Pittsburg Landing, in Tennessee, preparatory to an advance south on Corinth, Mississippi. General Ormsby Macknight Mitchel, in command of the Third Division of the Army of the Ohio, was given the defensive duty of safeguarding the Federal left, which included Middle Tennessee, against any Confederate threat from Chattanooga. Instead, Mitchel advanced to and captured Huntsville, Alabama.
This action provided several …
Study Of Longitudinal Landing Flying Qualities Evaluation Using Pilot Model Theory, Eric D. Didomenico
Study Of Longitudinal Landing Flying Qualities Evaluation Using Pilot Model Theory, Eric D. Didomenico
Theses and Dissertations
Control Anticipation Parameter (CAP), used in MIL-SPEC-8785C as a longitudinal handling qualities criterion does not adequately distinguish between different flight phases. Recent flight test data from the Landing Approach Higher Order Systems (LAHOS) study further indicate the inadequacy of the second order approximations for higher order longitudinal landing flying qualities. Nine Aircraft that fall within the Level 1 boundary reveal pilot ratings ranging from 1.5 to 10 (Cooper/Harper). These nine aircraft are studied by combining their longitudinal dynamics with pilot modelling to examine a better method of landing flying quality prediction and evaluation. Pilot model theory (cross-over pilot model) is …

Adult Age Differences In Recall And Reading Times For Prose, Dee Rene Ramsel
Adult Age Differences In Recall And Reading Times For Prose, Dee Rene Ramsel
Theses and Dissertations
One strategy used by good college-age readers is to spend additional time viewing or reading information which is relevant to their goals or purpose in reading. Additional viewing time of goal-relevant information then presumably leads to superior retention of this information, at the expense of information which is irrelevant to the reader's goals. One way to detect different strategies used by younger and older readers is to measure how much viewing time readers allot to goal-relevant information and how much of this information is recalled. Relevant information can be designated as that material which contains answers to previously-memorized questions or …

In order to better predict those areas whicd' have the po tential to be developed more rapidly than others, research concerning physical land use character isti ;s which determine current lakeshore patterns needs to be implemented. This study is designed to assess which physics . land use/cover characteristics have affected lake home development at Peli can Lake in north central Minnesota.
Analysis involves the interpretation of aerial photo graphs from the years 1939, I960, 1969, and 1978 which were used to map location and extent of land use/cover change in the Pelican Lake area. Archival data is utilized in order …
The Structure Of Reflexive Clauses In Michif: A Relational Grammar Approach, Larry Lee Lovell
The Structure Of Reflexive Clauses In Michif: A Relational Grammar Approach, Larry Lee Lovell
Theses and Dissertations
Work in Relational Grammar has made possible the characterization of such notions as 'passive' and 'reflexive' in terms of grammatical relations and relational changes. More recent work in Italian has revealed evidence supporting the notions of retroherent advancement and cancellation.
This study examines reflexive clauses in Michif, a language with Algonquian verb morphology. It shows (1) that the conditions for the occurrence of the reflexive morpheme and the passive morpheme may be formulated simply using concepts available in RG, (2) that the structure of reflexive Passive clauses involves retroherent advancement, and (3) that there exist initially unaccusative clauses in Michif …
The Omnibus Bill Of 1889: Statehood For Dakota Territory, Julie Marvyl Andresen Koch
The Omnibus Bill Of 1889: Statehood For Dakota Territory, Julie Marvyl Andresen Koch
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the Statehood history of the present-day states of North and South Dakota. They were part of the Territory of Dakota during the years of 1861-1889, their ultimate division occurring only after a long and bitter eighteen-year struggle.
The prime objective of this thesis is to pinpoint precisely the reasons why statehood for the Dakotas took so many years. It seeks to determine who supported and who opposed admission, both in Dakota Territory and in the United States Congress, and investigates the reasons admission was so long delayed. Specific investigation of the Fiftieth Congress, 1888-1889, is necessary because …
Solution To Eigenvalue Problems Of Antisymmetric Cross-Ply And Antisymmetric Angle-Ply Laminated Plates Using Affine Transformations, Zaffir A. Chaudry
Solution To Eigenvalue Problems Of Antisymmetric Cross-Ply And Antisymmetric Angle-Ply Laminated Plates Using Affine Transformations, Zaffir A. Chaudry
Theses and Dissertations
Using affine transformations and suitably recasting the buckling vibration differential equations, the eigenvalue problem of anti-symmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated rectangular plates has been reduced to a function of two strong material constants, the generalized rigidity ratio, whose range is in the closed interval from 0 to 1, and the ratio of principal lamina stiffness. With the reduction in number of constants an exhaustive parameter study of buckling and vibration solution trends, is possible. The buckling coefficients decrease with decreasing value of generalized rigidity ratio for both antisymmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminates. For a given aspect ratio, and …

Heuristics, Schemas And Biased Social Judgement: An Explanation Of The Reports Of The Sources Of Self-Knowledge, David L. Nash
Heuristics, Schemas And Biased Social Judgement: An Explanation Of The Reports Of The Sources Of Self-Knowledge, David L. Nash
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated subjects' reports of the sources of self-knowlege in light of the growing literature about the shortcomings of social judgment. The hypothesis of this study was the subjects' tendency to report self-observation at the expense of feedback and social comparison as the best source of self-knowledge is based on an implicit evaluation bias similar to Schlenker's (1980) notion of "self-projection" and Jellison and Greens' (1981) "norm of internality". It was predicted that subjects' intuitive notions about the sources are such that self-observation is seen as a generally "better" method of self-knowledge than feedback which, in turn, is better …
