Planning For The On-Orbit Servicing Of Military Spacecraft, Michael E. Russell, Robert M. Tayloe Sep 1984

Planning For The On-Orbit Servicing Of Military Spacecraft, Michael E. Russell, Robert M. Tayloe

Theses and Dissertations

On-orbit spacecraft servicing for military programs is examined. The military community appears to be somewhat reticent to embrace or, in some cases, to even consider on-orbit servicing. The civilian community appears enthusiastic about the potential of on-orbit servicing and the majority of economic studies of civilian missions show servicing strategies to be an attractive alternative to most expendable spacecraft strategies. A model called SATSERV is presented. This model can be used to conduct economic comparisons from an overall standpoint between expendable and servicing strategies. The model is implemented in a microcomputer spreadsheet format for rapid implementation and application along with …

Measurement Of Air Force Fire Department Productivity: An Evaluation Of Efficiency/Effectiveness, Timothy A. Byers, Susanne M. Waylette

Theses and Dissertations

This research was sponsored to develop a method of evaluating the productivity of Air Force Fire Departments. Using the tasks developed by the Fire Department Workshop, input and output measures were defined and used in a new model of efficiency called Constrained Facet Analysis (CFA). The advantage of this methodology over others considered was that it can simultaneously evaluate multiple inputs and multiple outputs using empirical data with no a priori weighting. The results of the analysis provided an efficiency rating for each fire department and information about marginal rates of substitution and marginal rates of productivity for inefficient units …

Reading Ability And Perception, Christopher J. Revis Aug 1984

Reading Ability And Perception, Christopher J. Revis

Theses and Dissertations

Skilled reading can be partly understood as a set- of interrelated component processes (Perfetti & Lesgold, 1979). The efficiency with which any one of these component pro cesses operates could limit or improve the efficient opera tion of the other component processes. However, there is some controversy over which of these component processes are important in showing differences in overall reading ability. The processes of interest in this study are those at the perceptual level. The purpose of the existing study was to examine the relationship between perceptual processes involved in reading and individual differences in reading ability among college …

Chapter 11 Reorganization: Creative Management Or An Abusive Of The System?, William R. Zilliot

Theses and Dissertations

Recent developments within the Bankruptcy Court system are controversial. Several of the largest corporations in the United States are currently undergoing reorganization. To some companies, Chapter 11 is the only way out of staggering debt, to others Chapter 11 is a means to stall liability suits, and to still others Chapter 11 represents a way to force wage concessions in the place of honoring union contracts. The entire Bankruptcy Court system itself has been successfully challenged as being Unconstitutional, and continues to operate only by a special dispensation from Congress.

When these developments are placed in an historical context, they …

The Effect Of Two Catalysts (Ammonia And Quinoline) On The Liquefaction Of North Dakota Lignite, Chia-Shiun Lee Jun 1984

The Effect Of Two Catalysts (Ammonia And Quinoline) On The Liquefaction Of North Dakota Lignite, Chia-Shiun Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of two disposable catalysts on liquefaction of lignite were evaluated by comparison of overall conversions and yields of distillate. All experiments were conducted using a tubing bomb reactor at temperatures ranging from 400˚C to 440˚C for a period of twenty minutes.

Using ammonia, a reaction temperature of 420˚C and a reducing gas of either synthesis gas or carbon monoxide gave the maximum yield of distillate. While ammonia promotes the formation of distillate, overall conversion is not increased. Quinoline had no significant effect on the overall conversion and distillate yield, except in the presence of hydrogen at 420˚C.
