Normative Influences On Pastors' Friendships (Loneliness, Pedestal, Propriety)., Tegan J. Blackbird Jan 1985

Normative Influences On Pastors' Friendships (Loneliness, Pedestal, Propriety)., Tegan J. Blackbird

Theses and Dissertations

Although the problem of ministerial loneliness is widely acknowledged in the literature, there is a conspicuous dearth of empirical research investigating the nature of the difficulty. Based on a review of the literature and exploratory interviews with several local pastors in the Grand Forks area, a study was designed to investigate ministerial loneliness by qualitatively assessing and comparing both the nature of the friendships of a population of pastors vs. those of matched control laymen, and the nature of existing normative structures for these two groups. The relationship between the friendship variables and normative variables for both groups were analyzed …

Preserving The Source: Early Microfilming Efforts Of The Genealogical Society Of Utah, 1938-1950, Kahlile B. Mehr Jan 1985

Preserving The Source: Early Microfilming Efforts Of The Genealogical Society Of Utah, 1938-1950, Kahlile B. Mehr

Theses and Dissertations

The Genealogical Society of Utah initiated a worldwide microfilming program at the advent of modern microfilm technology. It succeeded in negotiating for and filming records because of the religious commitment of its leaders and workers, the financial assistance of the LDS Church, the increased concern for records loss as demonstrated by World War II, the maturation of microfilm technology after the war, and the concentration of many religious records in civil archives. Religious commitment enthused the Society's leaders to persist in their efforts in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The resources of the Church permitted the filming to continue without …

Mormons, Lds Theology And The Nuclear Dilemma, Michael Henry Ballow Jan 1985

Mormons, Lds Theology And The Nuclear Dilemma, Michael Henry Ballow

Theses and Dissertations

LDS doctrine establishes three courses of action in conflict resolution: a) selective pacifism, b) action as proxy for God as prescribed under the doctrine of continuous revelation and c) absolute pacifism. Of these three, only absolute and selective pacifism are of practical use to the modern member of the LDS Church. Of the remaining two, government political decisions and technological momentum have moved current U.S. defense strategy and weaponry away from a defensive to an offense posture, thus invalidating the case of the selective pacifist and leaving only the absolutist's stand. Despite this development, however, the number of vocal pacifists …

Petrology Of The Beulah-Zap Lignite Bed, Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), Mercer County, North Dakota, David R. Kleesattel

Theses and Dissertations

The Beulah-Zap lignite bed is one of several economically important lignites in the Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene). This lignite occurs as a subsurface unit in the Knife River Basin of Mercer and I Oliver counties of North Dakota. The Beulah-Zap lignite is a heterogeneous carbonaceous rock unit composed of megascopic and microscopic I components, which are lithotypes and macerals, respectively. Relationships between the maceral contents of the lithotypes follow patterns similar to those of bituminous coals. Coal petrology, the study of maceral and lithotype occurrence and I distribution, was applied to determine: 1) mode of coalification, and 2) depositional environment …

Chemical Studies On Oxomolybdenum(Vi,Iv) Complexes As Bioinorganic Models For The Molybdenum Oxidases, James Thomas Lyon Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis, characterization, and chemical properties of Mo(VI)o2(5-X-SSP) and Mo(VI)o2(5-X-SSE), (5-X- SSP2- = 2-((5-X-salicylidene)amino)benzenethiolate; 5-X- SSE2- = 2-((5-X-salicylidene)amino)ethanethiolate; X = Br, Cl, H, CH3O), which contain tridentate (ONS) Schiff base ligands is described. The chemical properties of these molybdenum complexes are compared with those which possess tridentate (ONO) Schiff base ligands. Cyclic voltammetry was used to obtain cathodic reduction potentials (EPC) for the quasi-reversible reduction of the cis-dioxomolybdenum (VI) complexes. Although the reductions are quasi-reversible, trends are observed in EPC both within series and when different series are …

Women Homesteaders In Utah, 1869-1934, Jill Thorley Warnick Jan 1985

Women Homesteaders In Utah, 1869-1934, Jill Thorley Warnick

Theses and Dissertations

Much of Utah's history is the story of the relationship of humans and the land. Human perceptions of Utah's land have changed over time and affected the way it has been used. The homestead movement was an important phase in the use of Utah's land. Through federal settlement acts many Utahns obtained title to public land. This study is an attempt to learn more about the relationship between women and the land and about the lives of women in Utah.
The study is based on Utah land records from 1869-1934. Most homesteading activity in Utah took place during this period. …

A Study Of Chymotrypsin By Active Site Labeling (Fluorescence, Infrared, Modification, Titration, Quenching, Urea)., Jeffrey Lynn Carlson Jan 1985

A Study Of Chymotrypsin By Active Site Labeling (Fluorescence, Infrared, Modification, Titration, Quenching, Urea)., Jeffrey Lynn Carlson

Theses and Dissertations

In order to characterize the environmental and ionic nature of the active site of chymotrypsin (Chy), a number of derivatives were prepared and investigated using direct titration, FTIR and fluorescence spectroscopy. Chymotrypsin anthranilate (CA) fluorescence and it quenching was studied as a function of pH, ionic strength and urea concentration. The emission maximum of CA exhibits a blue shift with increasing pH and titrates with a pK(,a) of 7.7. This pK(,a) decreases for CA derivatives with surface carboxyls blocked. The titration of His 57 is likely responsible for this pH shift. Acrylamide was a better quencher at pH 8 than …
