The Espionage And Sedition Acts 1917-1918: A North Dakota Analysis, Eric Furuseth

Theses and Dissertations

The period of World War I is also the time of Nonpartisan League control in North Dakota. The period is of extreme interest to historians of the state as North Dakota's:experiment with the radical government was unique in the nation at the . time and a marked departure from the state's own political traditions. On both sides of the political fence, Nonpartisan and conservative, a kind of extremism existed which was unusual within the state.

The United States government passed the Espionage and Sedition acts of 1917 and 1918 as a means of legally ensuring the patriotism of its citizens; …

Study Of Char Particle Combustion Using Thermogravimetric Analysis, Mihir Manookumar Patel May 1987

Study Of Char Particle Combustion Using Thermogravimetric Analysis, Mihir Manookumar Patel

Theses and Dissertations

Combustion of North Dakota Beulah lignite char (82.5 microns) has been studied on a DuPont 951 Thermogravimetric analyser. Three oxygen partial pressures of 5, 10 and 20 % in nitrogen, and seven different temperatures from 598 K to 923 K were utilized in isothermal combustion experiments. Slow pyrolysis at 1023 K for 5 minutes greatly reduced the reactivity of the original char. Temperature had a definite effect on reaction rate and the higher the temperature, the greater the rate. Two distinct reaction zones were observed. At lower temperatures, chemical control dominated with an activation energy of 28 to 34 kcal/gmole, …

A Marketing Plan For A Mature Dental Practice, Linda C. Keup May 1987

A Marketing Plan For A Mature Dental Practice, Linda C. Keup

Theses and Dissertations

The market faced by a dental practitioner today is radically different from the one twenty years ago. Thus, the mature dental practice must adapt and change in response.

The cultural, social and legal issues which have created today's dental marketplace are examined through a review of the literature.

By means of an internal audit of the staff and a survey of current patients, attitudes toward one dental practice were acquired. Results of those surveys are explored for predictability. Demographic data was also gathered from the surveys, and the market currently served is identified. Additional target markets are identified and appropriate …

The Effects Of State And Trait Anxiety On Visual Attention To Photographs, Damon Gary Labarbera May 1987

The Effects Of State And Trait Anxiety On Visual Attention To Photographs, Damon Gary Labarbera

Theses and Dissertations

Antes (1974) described two stages of typical picture viewing behavior. First, subjects scanned, making long saccades to highly informative areas which were briefly fixated. Second, informative areas become "bases of operation" from which shorter saccades were made to less informative regions which were fixated for a longer time. The present study addressed anxiety's effects on this pattern. Research suggests that increased arousal, of which anxiety is one type, narrows attention to the most task salient or informative cues (Hockey, 1970). The pattern of attention described by Antes whereby details of progressively less informativeness are attended might therefore be affected by …

An American Reaction To Apartheid, Melvin D. Sorg Jr. May 1987

An American Reaction To Apartheid, Melvin D. Sorg Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Just what is the American reaction to apartheid, and how does one make generalizations about those perceptions and the values they imply? In approaching these questions the method chosen was to look at the visible reactions of those opinion leaders in the administration, press, and Congress that the American public took their cues from in forming attitudes in this area of foreign relations. Written articles and public statements reported by the press and in professional magazines and journals were examined, first to see if the reaction of these opinion leaders to the issue of apartheid and related concerns could be …

Construction Of A Biotyping System For Differential Identification Of Strains Of Staphylococcus Aureus., Judy Kae Magnuson

Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive, catalase-positive, coagulase positive, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic coccus usually arranged in irregular clusters that commonly causes pustules, carbuncles, impetigo, cellulitis, and post-surgical wound infections. S. aureus also causes septicemia, endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, exfoliative skin disease, scalded skin syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, and food poisoning. The method currently used for distinguishing among strains of Staphylococcus aureus is bacteriophage typing. The goal of this research was to develop a biotyping system for differentiating among strains of S. aureus. The parameters selected for the biotyping system included: DNase, phosphatase, gelatinase, urease, arginine decarboxylase, fermentation of mannitol, galactose, lactose, maltose, …

Comparison Of Virulent And Avirulent Legionella Pneumophila And Evaluation Of Fish As A Potential Environmental Reservoir/Experimental Model, Sandra Reading Sommer

Theses and Dissertations

Legionella pneumophila was first recognized as a cause of human pneumonia in 1976 . Since then, much has been learned about the microbiology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of this organism. The features which permit one strain but not another to invade human lung tissue and produce disease remain incompletely understood. This study e valuated several attributes of a virulent and an avirulent strain of L. pneumophila in an attempt to identify characteristics which would distinguish the two. Evaluation of a new medium, buffered egg yolk agar, showed that virulence was maintained after 26 passages, which was the same as the buffered …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this prospective study is to examine the effects of differences in utilization controls on HMO enrollees' health, satisfaction with quality of care and access, and disenrollment. Previous studies of alternative care systems have shown that they are able to decrease costs (Luft, 1981; Anderson, Herald, Butler, Kohrman, & Morrison, 1985), but have not examined the organizational structure within the organization that oversees utilization. No prior studies have examined the effects of different types and degrees of utilization controls on the health, satisfaction, and access of enrollees.

For this investigation, Williamson's (1975) theory of organizations, transaction costs economics, …

Metamorphism In The Wabigoon Subprovince In The Vicinity Of Vermilion Bay And Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Christine K. Roob

Theses and Dissertations

The Wabigoon-English River subprovince boundary has been proposed by various workers to be either a fault, an unconformity, an intrusive contact or a gradational boundary. North of the Wabigoon Fault, in the Vermilion Bay-Dryden area, migmatization and partial melting of meta sediments have produced a variety of metatexitic and diatexitic migmatites. Because migmatites are not encountered in the Wabigoon subprovince proper and the area north of the Wabigoon fault is so different from the rest of the subprovince, it is thought that the area may constitute the southernmost part of the English River sub province.

The Wabigoon Subprovince is a …

Electrochemical Kinetic And Mechanistic Study Of Reductive Cleavage Of Phenyl-Substituted Aryl Ethers., Todd A. Thornton Jan 1987

Electrochemical Kinetic And Mechanistic Study Of Reductive Cleavage Of Phenyl-Substituted Aryl Ethers., Todd A. Thornton

Theses and Dissertations

The electrochemical cleavages of diaryl ethers were studied. The radical anions or dianions of diphenyl ether, 1-phenoxynaphthalene, and 9-phenoxyanthracene were generated electrochemically. The cleavage reaction rates were measured and mechanisms of each cleavage reaction were postulated.Direct reduction of diphenyl ether was observed to be by one-electron at $-2.98$ V vs. SCE. A homogeneous redox catalysis process with acenaphthene as electron mediator was used to determine the rate of cleavage. Cyclic voltammetry was used to acquire peak current data. The radical anion of diphenyl ether was found to cleave by a unimolecular pathway at a rate of 4 $\times$ 10$\sp5$s$\sp{-1}$. A …
