An Assessment Of Pain Responses During Stages Of Pregnancy, Ann H. Dunbar
An Assessment Of Pain Responses During Stages Of Pregnancy, Ann H. Dunbar
Theses and Dissertations
As physical therapists are becoming more involved with the pregnant population both in traditional patient care as well as in childbirth education, a better understanding of the influence of pregnancy on the pain system is needed. The purpose of this study was to determine if an endogenous analgesia system is present in pregnant humans as has been shown to be present in animals (Ginzler, 1980). Women's affective and intensity responses were measured during late pregnancy, labor and post-partum. Using a repeated measures design, fifteen women responded to thermal stimuli (43-52 degrees C) by marking a visual analogue scale. No significant …

A Study Of The Binding Of Copper(Ii)-Amine Complexes To Polyacrylic Acid., Marilyn Elizabeth Martin
A Study Of The Binding Of Copper(Ii)-Amine Complexes To Polyacrylic Acid., Marilyn Elizabeth Martin
Theses and Dissertations
A study of the binding of copper(II)-amine complexes to polyacrylic acid was undertaken. Experimental binding curves were generated for polyacrylic acid having molecular weights of 11,050 and 1600 at an ionic strength of.5M and also at an ionic strength of.1M for the 11,050 molecular weight sample. An analysis of the experimental data indicates that the coordinating species is copper(II)-triamine. The formation curves were fit to analytical binding models and it was found that the higher molecular weight polyions exhibit cooperative behavior. The copper(II)-triamine PAA M$\sb{\rm n}$ 11,050 system at an ionic strength of.5M has seven coordinated ligands with an intrinsic …

Breeding Biology, Intrasexual Competition, And Philopatry In Wilson's Phalarope (Phalaropus Tricolor) (Canada)., Mark Allen Colwell
Theses and Dissertations
Intrasexual competition among males is a dominant feature of the mating system of most animals. Far fewer species exhibit female-female competition for mates. However, species showing reversal of the typical sex roles afford special opportunities to evaluate evolutionary generalities concerning sexual selection and mating systems.I studied Wilson's phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor), a sex-role reversed, nonterritorial shorebird, from 1982-1986 at Last Mountain Lake Wildlife Management Unit in southcentral Saskatchewan, Canada. Phalaropes were individually marked and data on breeding biology were recorded during daily observation periods. I focal sampled individual male phalaropes to assess weekly changes in the intensity of female-female competition for …

Depositional Environments And Diagenesis, Winnipegosis Formation (Middle Devonian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Nancy A. Perrin
Theses and Dissertations
In the Williston Basin, the Winnipegosis Formation is the major carbonate unit of the initial transgressive-regressive pulse of the Kaskaskia sequence. Twenty-two lithofacies were identified by well-log, core, and thin-section studies of Winnipegosis rocks; these belong to seven environments of deposition which include deep basin, deep shelf, shallow shelf, reef, lagoon, tidal flat, and evaporite basin. The deposition of the Winnipegosis and Prairie Formations were inter-related and occurred during six episodes. Following a brief hiatus separating the underlying Ashern Formation from the Winnipegosis, a clear, quiet, shallow-marine environment became established in the North Dakota portion of the Elk Point Basin. …
Evaluation Of The Interaction Between Seepage From A Municipal Waste Stabilization Lagoon, Mcville, North Dakota, And A Shallow Unconfined Aquifer, Paul R. Bulger
Theses and Dissertations
The McVille, North Dakota, Municipal Waste Stabilization Lagoon is situated above the McVille Aquifer, an unconfined glaciofluvial aquifer capable of significant water yields. The site contains a 3-D network of 29 monitoring wells. Standing waste-water is maintained in the clay-lined, primary-operating cell. Operating practices at the site entail periodic discharges of waste-water from the lined cell to an unlined cell, a procedure which results in rapid infiltration.
The shape and extent of the groundwater contaminant plume caused by the waste-stabilization process is best delineated by the distribution of chloride. Background wells contain less than 10 mg/L chloride. The area up …

Stress In Teaching: An Exploration Of Possible Sources, William D. Beasley
Theses and Dissertations
For many educators the teaching profession has become a job filled with growing amounts of tension and stress which, when unattended, can lead to occupational burn-out. Through the multiple regression analysis of the responses of 95 west central Georgia classroom teachers to the Clark Teacher Occupational Stress Factor Questionnaire, this study sought to determine the current levels of teacher stress within the group and to determine whether there were correlations between the characteristics of the group and the perceived levels of stress.
The findings indicated that classroom teachers find professional inadequacies and job overload to be the major stress producers …
Estimational Abilities And Mathematics Achievement Of Seventh Graders, Mary Elizabeth Mendenhall
Estimational Abilities And Mathematics Achievement Of Seventh Graders, Mary Elizabeth Mendenhall
Theses and Dissertations
Computational estimation and mental computation are two of the most neglected areas of today's mathematical curriculum. Much has been written about these two concepts, but little instruction has been carried out in the classroom (Johnson, 1979; Reys, 1986). Freeman (cited in Reys & Bestgen, 1981) states that less than 3% of textbooks had estimation lessons. Reys (1987) found that only 4% of lessons in all fourth-grade textbooks of the early 1980's deal with estimation. Also, Buchanan (1978, p. 2) observes that: "Instruction in. estimation is not something that has been tried and failed; it has not been tried on any …

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation: Influence On The Creativity Of Children's Poetry Writing, Violet Rich Hayes
Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation: Influence On The Creativity Of Children's Poetry Writing, Violet Rich Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
This study tested the hypothesis that creativity in children's writing will be significantly higher (p< .05) when, prior to writing a poem, children are presented a socially-induced intrinsic motivational orientation than when presented an extrinsic motivational orientation. Eighty sixth grade students were assigned to either a control group, intrinsic motivation group, or extrinsic motivation group. After writing the initial poem, students in the intrinsic orientation condition rank-ordered a 7-item intrinsic reasons for writing questionnaire before writing a second poem. The students in the extrinsic orientation rank-ordered extrinsic reasons for writing. A questionnaire was not given to those in the control condition. There were no significant differences in the creativity of the second poems after the experimental manipulations. The level of significance for individual paired-comparisons and also between group paired-comparisons of the pre- and posttest poems was p>.05. The implications of intrinsic and extrinsic orientations upon children's creativity are discussed.
The Relationship Between Teacher Attitudes Toward Standardized Testing And Student Test Scores, Laura J. Anderson
The Relationship Between Teacher Attitudes Toward Standardized Testing And Student Test Scores, Laura J. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Standardized testing in the public schools has an increasing impact on students, teachers, and administrators, yielding evaluative data which promise to become even more crucial to decision-making processes for all concerned. Also increasing are the negative attitudes of educators toward the testing program, in contrast to the growing emphasis placed on its importance by the public. Previous research indicates that teacher attitudes affect student outcomes; therefore, this study was developed to address the possibility of a correlation between teacher attitudes toward standardized testing and student test scores.
Ninety first-grade teachers in a selected county in Georgia served as subjects for …
