Glucocorticoid-Responsive Hepatic Cytochromes P-450 In The Rat: Multiplicity And Differential Regulation, Keith Alan Hostetler Jan 1988

Glucocorticoid-Responsive Hepatic Cytochromes P-450 In The Rat: Multiplicity And Differential Regulation, Keith Alan Hostetler

Theses and Dissertations

The multiplicity of glucocorticoid-responsive hepatic cytochromes P-450 in the rat was investigated by developing a series of monoclonal antibody probes directed against purified steroid-inducible isozymes from the rat (P-450p) and man (HLp). Two antibodies, termed 1G8 and 13-7-10, showed unique specificity for purified cytochromes P-450 upon immunoblot analyses. These antibodies were further characterized in terms of their reactivity toward proteins in liver microsomes from untreated and xenobiotic-treated rats. Three P-450p-related proteins were identified using 1G8 and 13-7-10 to monitor the expression of P-450p family subtypes. In untreated rats, members of this family exhibited sex-specific expression. Treatment with various chemicals resulted …

The contribution of the Phanerozoic overburden (density assumed to be 2 . 48 g cm- 3 ) to the gravity signal, was removed, leaving residual gravity anomalies due to …

Aspects Of Bald Eagle Winter Behavior In Rush Valley Utah: A Telemetry Study, Neil B. Sabine Dec 1987

Aspects Of Bald Eagle Winter Behavior In Rush Valley Utah: A Telemetry Study, Neil B. Sabine

Theses and Dissertations

The diurnal behavior and nocturnal roosting patterns of 28 bald eagles outfitted with tail-mounted radios were investigated in Rush Valley, Utah between January and March 1982-1984. Casting analysis and feeding observations indicated the principal food source was jackrabbit carrion. Jackrabbit availability declined from 1982 to 1984 and eagles responded by; 1) roosting closer to feeding sites, 2) shifting from canyon to valley roosts, 3) arriving later at and departing earlier from roosts, 4) decreasing diurnal activity, and 5) decreasing residence time. Foraging efficiency appeared to be maximized by experienced eagles using familiar feeding areas and by naive birds monitoring their …

Restrained Eating : The Effects Of Privacy And Perception Of Having Overeaten On Subsequent Food Consumption, Geraldine T. Merola Dec 1987

Restrained Eating : The Effects Of Privacy And Perception Of Having Overeaten On Subsequent Food Consumption, Geraldine T. Merola

Theses and Dissertations

Herman & Mack (1975) theorized that "restrained eaters," conflicted between social pressure to be thin and biological pressure to be fat, tend to alternately eat very little or a great deal, as they respond to one or the other constraint. According to restraint theory, restrained eaters' chronic dieting induces physiological and psychological states that make them highly susceptible to external disruption of eating controls. Research has shown that when led to believe they have already overeaten (i.e., when they are "preloaded"), restrained eaters will loosen restraints and "counterregulate" (i.e., binge-eat). In contrast, "unrestrained eaters" (i.e., normal eaters) will compensate by …

The Effects Of Caffeine On The Recall Of Prose Passages, Scott V. Sternhagen Dec 1987

The Effects Of Caffeine On The Recall Of Prose Passages, Scott V. Sternhagen

Theses and Dissertations

It has been demonstrated that an individual's level of arousal has a significant effect on their ability to perform a specific tasks. This arousal may be due to stable trait characteristics such as those measured by the impulsivity subscale of the Eysenck Introversion Extroversion Scale or transient state effects like those caused by consumption of stimulants such as caffeine. Manipulation of trait and state arousal have been shown to cause significant effects on an individual's ability to perform various cognitive tasks such as to remember word lists or prose passages.

In this experiment, 79 male subjects listened to three expository …

A History Of The Northern Dakota Railway Company, Douglas Ramsey

Theses and Dissertations

The Northern Dakota Railway Company 's (NDRC) story began in 1891. In that year a young professor from the University of North Dakota, E . J. Babcock, started searching the Pembina Hills of northeastern North Dakota for minerals. Along the Tongue River he discovered cement clays that he believed had enough of the natural ingredients to make Portland cement. Babcock enlisted the aid of the president of the University of North Dakota, Webster Merrifield, to help him develop a cement industry. The two, along with John Macnie and J. Montgomery Sears, put up capital to buy the land and build …

P.L. 93-638: Self-Determination Or Termination?, Thurman J. Robinson Aug 1987

P.L. 93-638: Self-Determination Or Termination?, Thurman J. Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

For the approximate two hundred years of their relationship, the federal government has dictated the life situation of Indians. The federal government has vacillated in both the method and goal in its role as dominate partner. Indian tribes have sometimes been regarded as governments through treaties; viewed as immigrants in plans of assimilation; and have been viewed as a "primitive peoples" to be preserved from modern day corruption. Most recently, they have been offered self-determination, - i.e., the eventual power to assimilate and to preserve their heritage as they as Indians desire. The government, however, has not relinquished this control …

The Predation Ecology Of The Northern Harrier (Circus Cyaneus Hudsonius) On Mallard Island, North Dakota, Jessica Elin Sutherland Aug 1987

The Predation Ecology Of The Northern Harrier (Circus Cyaneus Hudsonius) On Mallard Island, North Dakota, Jessica Elin Sutherland

Theses and Dissertations

I studied predation ecology of Northern Harriers (Circus cyaneus hudsonius) on Mallard Island in McLean County, North Dakota, during May-August, 1984-1985. Harrier population parameters, productivity, food habits, and feeding rates were examined. I located 15 nests in 1984 and 14 in 1985. Nesting chronology, clutch sizes, hatching and fledging success, and productivity were similar to values previously reported. Flooding, predation, starvation, and parental abandonment were responsible for egg loss or pre-fledging mortality. Chick survival to fledging was independent of brood size which suggested that quality of parental care, not a limited prey resource, was an important influence on survival. The …

Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd Aug 1987

Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd

Theses and Dissertations

The present study evaluated the efficacy of a four-week seminar which emphasized the principles of Agentive Theory. This theory, which is compatible with theories of a phenomenological/ existential perspective, was first developed by C. T. Warner, an American philosopher. Agentive Theorists/Therapists emphasize that our negative emotions, ie., depression, anger, etc. , are assertions or judgments we make and not merely feelings we are responsible for controlling or expressing. Forty-eight outpatients who sought help with personal/emotional problems from a department of behavioral medicine were assigned to either a treatment or waiting-list control Group. Following a four-week treatment phase, the treatment group …

Norwegian-American Lutheran Churchwomen In North Dakota: The Ladies Aid Societies, Erik Luther Williamson Jun 1987

Norwegian-American Lutheran Churchwomen In North Dakota: The Ladies Aid Societies, Erik Luther Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

Little has been written about the women's society of the Norwegian-American Lutheran Church in North Dakota. From 1880 to 1930 it was prominent in the pioneer congregation. Known as the kvindeforening and as the Lutheran Ladies Aid, this society supported its · congregation, contributed to missions, and held many activities throughout the year. The women left few records of their work; they disclaimed any personal importance. The problem has been to determine the actual influence of the Ladies Aid within its own congregation and within its community. Primary sources have been the American Lutheran Church Records, the Women's Missionary Federation …
