Undetermined Outcomes: Student Teachers And The Heuristics Of Adjusting Lesson Plans To Various Ecological Influences., Sharon M. Mccarriar
Theses and Dissertations
This study attempted to gain a greater understanding of how four secondary physical education student teachers made interactive decisions without the background of teaching experiences which is essential in building a repertoire of heuristic strategies. Four descriptive accounts provided examples of the ecological influences for each student teacher's decisions concerning his or her preactive lesson planning, interactive teaching, and postactive evaluations. Qualitative methodology, in a comparative case study approach, utilized non-participant observation and stimulated recall procedures in collecting the data. Results showed the four most frequent ecological influences on the student teachers' planning decisions were: student behavior cues, the number of …

Immunomodulatory Effects Of Transforming Growth Factor-Β On T Lymphocytes, Thomas Harris Inge
Immunomodulatory Effects Of Transforming Growth Factor-Β On T Lymphocytes, Thomas Harris Inge
Theses and Dissertations
Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFβ) is a peptide cytokine implicated in control of growth, adhesion, and differentiation of cells in numerous tissues. TGFβ has potent inhibitory effects on many lymphocyte responses; we also found that TGFβ could inhibit in vitro generation of tumor-specific CTL. Suppression was largely reversed with exogenous IL-2. Proliferation of memory-stage CTL clones was also inhibited by TGFβ, while the upregulation of cytotoxicity was not inhibited by TGFβ. These studies suggested that TGFβ limited anti-tumor CTL responses via both an indirect effect on IL-2 production, and by a direct effect on proliferation of memory CTL.

The Choreography And Production Of "Jacob Five: A Journey Into The Olive Vineyard", Laurie Behunin
The Choreography And Production Of "Jacob Five: A Journey Into The Olive Vineyard", Laurie Behunin
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of choreographing "Jacob Five: A Journey into the Olive Vineyard" was to artistically express a religious allegory in order to praise God as well as to bring the audience, dancers, and choreographer to a new understanding of the passage from which it was derived. The 39-minute dance was presented April 10, 1993 as a dance fireside. Following the performance, an informal discussion was held to give the audience an opportunity to respond to the dance. These comments were considered and recorded as part of the evaluation of this thesis. Both the thesis and video of "Jacob Five: A …

Academic Achievement Of Administratively Placed Students, Donna D. Goodson
Theses and Dissertations
In an attempt to curb the dropout rate, Troup County School System has developed several programs that focus on students identified as at-risk. A characteristic associated closely with many at-risk youth is having been retained in grade. A policy in the middle schools in Troup County is designed to identify students who have been retained in grade two years and assign them to a higher grade in an attempt to place them with others closer to their own age. This study is an attempt to follow-up on the progress of seventeen students who participated in the program in 1989.

The Effect Of The Prime Experience On The Mathematics Confidence And Achievement In Measurement Concepts And Skills Of Sixth Grade Females, Mary Jo Trask
Theses and Dissertations
Three rising sixth graders were randomly selected from the group of girls participating in PRIME camp at Columbus College the week of July 20-24, 1992, for the study of mathematics confidence and achievement in measurement concepts and skills. The three girls were asked to respond to a Fennema-Sherman scale and to participate in three measurement activities during the week of July 20-24, 1992, at PRIME camp at Columbus College. The attitudinal scale was scored and a journal of responses was kept on the activities in which each girl participated. The measurement activities were repeated in November and the attitudinal scale …
A Handbook For Investigative Science Projects Including An Introduction To Statistical Analysis, George E. Averill
A Handbook For Investigative Science Projects Including An Introduction To Statistical Analysis, George E. Averill
Theses and Dissertations
A Handbook for Investigative Science Projects: Including an Introduction to Statistical Analysis provides a step-by-step procedure from how to select a project to displaying the finished product. The handbook fills the gap in the literature between guidance for elementary students and graduate level research. Both middle and secondary teachers may wish to use the handbook as a resource guide when planning remedial instruction. Advanced students at the secondary level should be able to read and understand the handbook on their own. It includes specific instructions for keeping a professional logbook, budgeting time, researching the literature, evaluating the results, and writing …
Section 76 As Literature In The Doctrine And Covenants, William H. Brugger
Section 76 As Literature In The Doctrine And Covenants, William H. Brugger
Theses and Dissertations
This project attempts to demonstrate the value of literary approaches to the Doctrine and Covenants, using a predominantly formalistic approach. To establish a foundation, the first chapter discusses the rich literary content of the Doctrine and Covenants, providing examples of the various literary genres represented in it, such as narrative, saga, parable, and poetry. The second chapter presents portions of Section 76 that contain features characteristic of Hebrew poetry, such as figures of speech and parallelism. The third chapter analyzes ways in which Section 76's poetic dimensions are illuminated by "The Vision," a 312-line poem attributed to Joseph Smith. The …
An Investigation Of Bank Lending Practices To Test Portfolio Theory And Theories Of Credit Rationing And Customer Relationships, Christine Chmura
An Investigation Of Bank Lending Practices To Test Portfolio Theory And Theories Of Credit Rationing And Customer Relationships, Christine Chmura
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to consider the theoretical basis of commercial loan pricing. Is commercial loan pricing most representative of pricing to reflect risk in the Markowitz sense or do banks ration their loanable funds based on credit risk or expected long-term customer value? Alternatively, does each theory contribute to the explanation of loan pricing?
Some of the pricing theories noted in this study have been tested at the aggregate banking level, however, few studies have been performed at the loan level. Moreover, the author is not aware of any study that tests which theory noted here best …
Nonenzymatic Glycation Of Cytoskeletal Proteins In Diabetes Mellitus., Michael Ray Brown
Nonenzymatic Glycation Of Cytoskeletal Proteins In Diabetes Mellitus., Michael Ray Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Prolonged hyperglycemia, as seen in diabetes, results in nonenzymatic glycation of proteins and DNA. Previous investigation by others has shown that many intracellular proteins are glycated, both, in vivo and in vitro. Nonetheless, only a few proteins have been analyzed for the effect of glycation on their function.Glucose and galactose were found to modify a large number of the lysyl residues in selected cytoskeletal proteins. These results led to the study of myosin and S-1 (subfragment-1 of myosin), first with FITC (fluorescein isothiocyanate; isomer #1) and later with comparatively less reactive sugars (sorbitol, glucose, fructose, and ribose).FITC caused a decrease …

Depositional And Diagenetic Controls On Porosity Evolution In The "C" Zone, Red River Formation (Upper Ordovician), Divide County, North Dakota, John S. Fox
Theses and Dissertations
Carbonates and evaporites in the "C" zone c: the Red River Formation (Upper Ordovician) in the subsurface of Divide County, North Dakota, were studied in order to determine the geologic framework of porosity evolution in this important hydrocarbon-producing formation. Examination of 28 cores, petrographic analysis, geochemical analysis, and mapping based on 120 geophysical log suites allowed the characterization of "C" zone lithologies and diagenetic features and suggests that the entire "C" zone was deposited subtidally in an increasingly restricted basin, rather than in a subtidal to supratidal regressive sequence as interpreted by others in different parts of the basin.
