Characterization Of A Promoter Rearrangement And A Second Promoter In The Human C-Myb Proto-Oncogene, Sarah Margaret Jacobs Jan 1993

Characterization Of A Promoter Rearrangement And A Second Promoter In The Human C-Myb Proto-Oncogene, Sarah Margaret Jacobs

Theses and Dissertations

The human cellular proto-oncogene c-myb has been implicated as important in the regulation of hematopoietic cell growth and differentiation. Aberrant expression of this gene and chromosomal aberrations near the c-myb locus have been associated with a number of carcinogenic processes. An alternatively spliced CDNA clone of c-myb, pMbm-2, contains unique 5’ sequences which replace exon 1. The existence of this 5’ divergent CDNA clone led us into a study of the promoter activity of the c-myb gene.

Intron 1 of c-myb is highly conserved between human and mouse throughout the intron, while only those sequences directly adjacent to exons …

Design And Evaluation Of An Augmentative Communication Aid For Multiply Impaired Individuals, Mark S. Annett Jan 1993

Design And Evaluation Of An Augmentative Communication Aid For Multiply Impaired Individuals, Mark S. Annett

Theses and Dissertations

Individuals with sensory and multiple physical impairments, which may include the loss of the ability to speak, have very specialized communication needs. Based on the belief that the current technology does not fully meet these needs, a prototype communication aid was developed for an individual who is cortically blind, dysphonic, and motor impaired. Furthermore, the communication device has broader applications beyond the present individual.

The prototype system has a direct selection of "Yes" and "No" responses, scanning access to daily phrases, rate enhancement of all scans, prompted encoding for selection of letters, two letter codes for complete sentences, access to …

Mechanisms Of Complement Resistance By Pathogenic Naegleria Fowleri Amoebae, Denise Marie Toney Jan 1993

Mechanisms Of Complement Resistance By Pathogenic Naegleria Fowleri Amoebae, Denise Marie Toney

Theses and Dissertations

The genus Naegleria is composed of a distinct group of free-living amoeboflagellates that include both pathogenic and nonpathogenic species. N. fowleri, the only pathogenic species of Naegleria to be isolated from humans, is the etiological agent of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare but rapidly fatal disease of the central nervous system in humans and in laboratory animals. The mechanisms of pathogenicity and the determinants of virulence of N. fowleri are unknown. Both pathogenic and nonpathogenic Naegleria activate the alternative complement pathway, however pathogenic N. fowleri are complement-resistant and nonpathogenic N. gruberi are complement-sensitive. The ability to resist complement-mediated lysis …

Characteristic mean scores of importance demonstrate that respondents perceived all 22 characteristics as either "very important" or "highly important." When all 22 characteristic …

Relationships Among The Distribution Of Terminal Fields Of Sensory Afferent Projections To The Deep Layers Of The Superior Colliculus Within The Cat, Wayne Thomas Shaia Jan 1993

Relationships Among The Distribution Of Terminal Fields Of Sensory Afferent Projections To The Deep Layers Of The Superior Colliculus Within The Cat, Wayne Thomas Shaia

Theses and Dissertations

While it is well known that the different sensory modalities are primarily represented at separate locations within the central nervous system, there are numerous sites in which information from the different sensory modalities converge. Perhaps the best known structure where inputs from different sensory modalities converge is the superior colliculus. Here, not only are visual, auditory and somatosensory inputs present, but they also form organized representations of auditory and visual space as well a map of the body surface in addition, neurons that receive inputs from more than one sensory modality (i.e. multisensory) are found here in abundance. Although a …

Sjögren-Larsson Syndrome: Genetic Studies And Biochemical Characterization Of Human Fatty Aldehyde Dehydrogenase, Todd L. Kelson Jan 1993

Sjögren-Larsson Syndrome: Genetic Studies And Biochemical Characterization Of Human Fatty Aldehyde Dehydrogenase, Todd L. Kelson

Theses and Dissertations

Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is an autosomal recessive disorder due to deficiency of the fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase (FALDH) component of fatty alcohol:NAD+ oxidoreductase (FAO). We investigated the enzymatic defect in SLS in order to elucidate the role of FALDH in fatty aldehyde and fatty alcohol metabolism.

Genetic studies were performed to investigate carrier detection for SLS. Cultured skin fibroblasts from normal controls, SLS obligate heterozygotes, and SLS homozygotes were assayed for FAO and FALDH activities using 18-carbon substrates. In SLS homozygotes, mean FAO and FALDH activities were 8% of normal, and there was no overlap between the homozygote and heterozygote …

Competency For Execution: Factors Affecting The Judgement Of Forensic Psychologists, Sharon Brown Dec 1992

Competency For Execution: Factors Affecting The Judgement Of Forensic Psychologists, Sharon Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The determination of a death-row inmate's competency to be executed is a compelling ethical issue for mental health professionals. It has been suggested that forensic psychologists who offer such services to the courts may tend to approach the problem of determining competency by diverse and unstandardized methods (Grisson, 1986). Heilbrun (1986) has questioned the effect of the psychologist's potential death penalty bias on the outcome of the evaluation process.

Death penalty attitudes have a demonstrated effect on the decision-making processes of capital jurors who are death-qualified, (willing to impose the death penalty under some circumstances) or excludable (unwilling to consider …

The Sacred Hoop: The Hero And Community In Selected Works Of Mari Sandoz, Diane Drake Dec 1992

The Sacred Hoop: The Hero And Community In Selected Works Of Mari Sandoz, Diane Drake

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the theme of the hero and community in the works of Mari Sandoz. The hypothesis is that Sandoz believed in the concept of a world community so that her works are centered around the hero as community builder. Using the Lakota concept of the sacred hoop as the controlling metaphor for the study, I have asserted that Sandoz has illustrated in her novels, biographies, and histories that true heroes try to build and maintain the sacred hoop of community, but their efforts are continually thwarted by the weaknesses in themselves and society.

The study is organized around …

The main purpose of this research is to develop a model that can be used to solve combined spectral and spatial pattern recognition problems. The basis of my model is a multiobjective discrete programming model developed by Benabdullah and Wright (B and W). The model will be modified and then tested by solving a real world problem with SPOT multispectral imagery. Several improvements were added to the B and W model, namely standard border length accounting and control over which pixels are selected by the model. The model was also improved to process more than one channel of imagery at …

Correlation Based Target Location And Identification, Richard A. Wenzel Dec 1992

Correlation Based Target Location And Identification, Richard A. Wenzel

Theses and Dissertations

Correlation was investigated as a technique for locating and identifying visible light terrain board images of tanks, airplanes, and trucks. A correlator was built which utilizes the Fast Fourier Transform. The 180 images in the image set were correlated in both the raw form and after pre-processing via energy normalization and local energy normalization. The correlation of the raw images led to development of quantitative and heuristic rules for possible inclusion in a rule based expert system. The correlation of the local energy normalized images resulted in a 100 percent target location rate and can be used as a baseline …
