Forest Structure And Edge Effects On Bee Functional Diversity In Private, Working Pine Forests, Madalyn Stoecker

Theses and Dissertations

Private, working forests provide unique opportunities for biodiversity research and management. Even-aged management often creates a heterogeneous mosaic of forest stands in southeastern loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) landscapes, with stands containing structural and compositional characteristics that support different bee functional groups. Interspersion of different structural conditions, combined with roads separating adjacent stands, leads to prevalence of edges across much of the landscape, which may have varying effects on bee species. I evaluated how landscape heterogeneity and presence of edge influences functional diversity in wild bee (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila) communities during the summers of 2022 and 2023. Open conditions within early …

Mitigating Delay And Coupling Effects In A High-Speed Pmsm Drive Using An Optimal Multivariable Control Approach, Kazi Nishat Tasnim

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, an optimal multivariable current control method is presented for the highspeed permanent magnet synchronous motor (HS-PMSM). The HS-PMSMs have growing applications in the industry. One of their major challenges is the low switching to fundamental frequency ratio (SFR). At high speed and low SFR, the control time delays including the digital, the PWM, and sensor delays become more pronounced and lead to oscillations and even instabilities. A well-known method for delay compensation is to advance the phase angle of control input for a known amount. In practice, the exact delay is unknown, and mismatch in the compensating …

The Effect Of Salient Features And Recent Strategy Use On Strategy Selection In Problem Solving, Xinyu Xie

Theses and Dissertations

Salient features of a task play an important role in how people create task representations which then influence strategy selection for accomplishing the task. We examined two theories, Represent-Construct-Choose-Learn and Rational Metareasoning, both of which incorporate task features into their models of strategy selection but differ in feature set modification. We used the Building Sticks Task (BST) in which it has been shown that people are sensitive to a salient feature in the BST to test the predictions of both theories. The results showed that neither theory aligned closely with empirical data. Additionally, we investigated participants’ strategy preferences in BST …

Insights From The Past: Does Access To Unsuccessful Problem Attempts Facilitate Restructuring In Insight Problems?, Emily Ann Williamson Creel

Theses and Dissertations

Insight problems are often comprised of a period of impasse during which no new attempts are generated followed by an abrupt realization of the solution arising from the restructuring of an initial flawed problem representation. However, the precise mechanisms precipitating these processes are still being investigated. One hypothesis is that analyzing the unchanging elements of previous attempts may facilitate restructuring. We investigated this hypothesis using three classic insight problems. Participants were provided either three common examples of unsuccessful problem attempts, their own problem attempts, or no previous attempts. The prior attempts conditions eliminate the need to rely on memory to …
