Sleep, Eat, Repeat: An Examination Of The Influence Of Sleep And Biological Sex On Eating-Related Inhibitory Control In Overweight Emerging Adults, Shelby Mika Seipert-Raine

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Lower inhibitory control has been shown to associate with greater risk for obesity in adolescence. On average, females have moderately higher rates of behavioral inhibitory control than males. These difference in inhibitory control across sex may influence overeating and development of obesity. This study examined whether sleep duration and sleep quality are associated with food-related inhibitory control and whether this association is moderated by biological sex. Methods: A total of 59 emerging adults ages 18 to 25 (37 males, 22 females) who had a BMI within the overweight or obese categories (BMI ≥25) completed self-report measures of eating and …

A Bilevel Approach To Resource Allocation For Utility-Based Request-Response Systems, Tanner Jack Sundwall May 2024

A Bilevel Approach To Resource Allocation For Utility-Based Request-Response Systems, Tanner Jack Sundwall

Theses and Dissertations

We present a novel bilevel programming formulation that aims to solve a resource allocation problem for request-response systems. Our formulation is motivated by potential inefficiencies in the allocation of computational resources to incoming user requests in such systems. In our experience, systems often operate with a surplus of resources despite potentially incurring unjustifiable cost. Our work attempts to optimize the tradeoff between the financial cost of resources and the opportunity cost of unfulfilled user demand. Our bilevel formulation consists of an \textit{upper} problem which has a constraint value appearing in the \textit{lower} problem. We derive efficient methods for finding global …

Synthesis Of High-Quality Cost Effective Zno Nanorods For Photovoltaic Applications, Ghusoon Jalil Ibrahim Al Bazzar

Theses and Dissertations

Due to its outstanding structural, optical, and electrical properties, zinc oxide (ZnO) has received considerable attention from researchers. Even though there is a high demand for functional devices involving ZnO films and nanostructures, synthesizing devices comprising ZnO nanostructures requires expensive and time-consuming techniques that have limited their viability for comprehensive applications. Thus, there is a high demand for high-quality, cost-effective ZnO nanostructures. We have optimized the simple, low-cost, and time-efficient electrochemical deposition (ECD) technique to successfully synthesize high-quality vertically aligned ZnO nanorods to bridge this gap between fundamental and applied research. Characterization of their structural properties through x-ray diffraction and …

Neurobiological Underpinnings Of Autistic Traits, Sensory Processing, And Mental Health In Young Adult Males And Females, Miranda Jane Mcquarrie May 2024

Neurobiological Underpinnings Of Autistic Traits, Sensory Processing, And Mental Health In Young Adult Males And Females, Miranda Jane Mcquarrie

Theses and Dissertations

Females may present with autism more frequently than is diagnosed, due, in part, to autistic trait and sensory processing differences. Unfortunately, recruiting enough autistic female participants is difficult, because of such underdiagnoses. By approaching autism as a continuous variable, neurotypical (NT) individuals can be studied to better understand autistic individuals. Thus, to examine potential neurobiological underpinnings of sex-based behavioral profiles, we recruited 52 NT individuals (22 male; 30 female). Participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine how functional network connectivity (via group independent components analysis) underpinned overall male/female differences in previously measured behavioral autistic trait and sensory …

Dissecting Trypanosome Metabolism By Discovering Glycolytic Inhibitors, Drug Targets, And Glycosomal Ph Regulation, Daniel Hale Call

Theses and Dissertations

Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of African trypanosomiasis, and its relatives Trypanosoma cruzi and several Leishmania species belong to a class of protozoa called kinetoplastids that cause a significant health burden in tropical and semitropical countries across the world. While an improved therapy was recently approved for African trypanosomiasis, the therapies available to treat infections caused by T. cruzi and Leishmania spp. remain relatively poor. Improving our understanding of T. brucei metabolism can inform on metabolism of its relatives. The purpose of the research presented in this dissertation was to develop novel tools and methods to study metabolism in T. …

Fecal Genomics Provides Insights On Connectivity Of Endangered Wildlife In A Human Dominated Landscape, Abhinav Tyagi May 2024

Fecal Genomics Provides Insights On Connectivity Of Endangered Wildlife In A Human Dominated Landscape, Abhinav Tyagi

Theses and Dissertations

Many mammalian species, facing severe historic range reductions, now inhabit fragmented habitats. Habitat fragmentation involves the reduction of habitat into smaller patches, increasing distances between them, and eventually leading to small isolated populations. Species' responses to habitat alteration may vary based on factors such as body size, dispersal ability, and abundance. Understanding these differences is crucial for effective multispecies conservation planning. Genomic data, within a landscape genetic framework, are increasingly applied to evaluate the effects of habitat fragmentation and understand influential landscape features for connectivity. The quantity of data enhances the power and precision of assessing landscape impacts on gene …

Students who started in the lowest level of developmental mathematics had a twenty percent chance of completing their college-level mathematics credits (Bailey et al., 2010). Two innovative approaches were implemented to assist students with completing their college-level mathematics course. First, creating mathematics pathways courses aligned with student’s degree plans. Second, implementing developmental mathematics corequisite courses supporting the mathematics pathways courses. Thus, reducing the time it took an underprepared mathematics student to complete their college-level mathematics requirement. …

Hospital Provider Knowledge Of Behavioral Function And Management Of Severe Behavior For Patients With Autism, Giovanna Salvatore Devito May 2024

Hospital Provider Knowledge Of Behavioral Function And Management Of Severe Behavior For Patients With Autism, Giovanna Salvatore Devito

Theses and Dissertations

Hospital patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may engage in various topographies of severe behavior, with higher rates of restraint implemented than for their neurotypical counterparts. In Study 1, the research team developed the Knowledge of Behavioral Function (KoBF) survey measure, using an iterative user-centered development process and administered the measure to multidisciplinary physicians and trainees. Results indicated low knowledge of behavioral function, with a mean percent correct of 66.60% on close-ended survey items and 14% …

Investigating The Antibacterial And Immunomodulatory Effects Of Resolvin D2 On Monocytes And Macrophages, Cristina Maria Padovani May 2024

Investigating The Antibacterial And Immunomodulatory Effects Of Resolvin D2 On Monocytes And Macrophages, Cristina Maria Padovani

Theses and Dissertations

In the late phase of sepsis, immunosuppression occurs, where the host is unable to clear the pre-existing infection and is susceptible to secondary infections. It is believed that the ideal treatments for sepsis should attenuate immunosuppression so that the host can get back to homeostasis. Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators (SPMs) are endogenously- produced fatty acids that resolve infectious inflammation without being immunosuppressive. We hypothesize that an SPM – Resolvin D2 (RvD2) – can augment exhausted macrophage function during the immunosuppressive phase of sepsis. We developed a two-hit model to establish macrophage exhaustion in vitro, and found that RvD2 increased NF-κB activity, …
