The Box Elder Stake Academy was a part of the Church System of Academies under the direction of Karl G. Maeser. The historical setting of Box Elder County is rather unique. It was here that Lorenzo Snow directed one of the most successful forms of the United Order. The nearby city of Corinne was established as one of the few gentile cities in Utah, and from there a new crusade to end Mormon rule in Utah was begun.

The Box Elder Stake Academy was one of the first academies created under the direction of the First Presidency of the Church. …

In early Church history, several men were designated by the title of Assistant President, or Associate President, but only Oliver Cowdery, and later Hyrum Smith, held the actual office which is the subject of the present study. That office is properly titled Associate President.

The office of Associate President fulfilled the requirements of the law of witnesses, and was a priesthood office. The Associate President assisted in bearing the keys of the last dispensation, and was acknowledged as the second ranking member of the First Presidency. This thesis has a two-fold purpose: (1) to provide an historical outline of the incidence of patriotic thematic material in Western art by presenting examples of works from dominant Western cultures beginning with Greece and Rome and including Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United States. Examples given are in sequence from the eleventh century to the present excluding the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth centuries. Since World War II, the American balance-of-payments situation has presented a multifaceted problem. This study is an attempt to show some of the interrelated and overlapping political, economic, military and diplomatic aspects of this problem. Of the key factors involved, international trade and foreign aid programs have been of primary significance. Proposed solutions, however, have reflected highly diverse opinion on both the national and international levels.

This thesis gives an account of the establishment and development of the LDS Church in Switzerland without attempting to record a comprehensive chronological history. Instead, emphasis has been placed on beginnings and major historical developments.

In 1850, T. B. H. Stenhouse began teaching the "restored gospel" in French-Switzerland, at Geneva. Proselyting began in German-Switzerland in 1854. Despite mob violence and opposition from the clergy, press and civil authorities, some 9,846 joined the Church and 4,700 of these emigrated to "Zion." The discouragement of emigration, along with new emphasis on missionary work and improved proselyting methods, brought an unprecedented growth in …

Unlike other Latin American nations, the Mexican armed forces have not resorted to a coup d'etat in the last fifty years, and at the same time have maintained a strong influence in the affairs of the nation.

In this thesis, the writer has tried to explain reasons why the Mexican military has not found it necessary to try to overthrow the government.

The procedure used was to collect and analyze data on the Mexican armed forces, military, and non-military functions and roles to determine reasons for this situation in Mexico. The writer experienced great difficulty in collecting data, nevertheless, in …

The intent of this paper is to uncover the political activity of William Langer from the Morton County State’s Attorney days of 1914 to his election as governor of North Dakota in 1932.

The first bold signs of Langer’s entertaining political ambitions came during his break with the original Nonpartisan League leaders during the time he served as North Dakota's Attorney General, 1916-1920. The Independent Voters Association helped him to realize a measure of political strength when they used him as a candidate for governor in 1920. Founded by Walter S. Lemmon on June 26, 1931, international radio station WRUL originally had the call letters W1XAL. On December 2, 1934, the stat ion began broadcasting World Radio University programs produced by the World Wide Broadcasting Foundation, a non-profit, educational foundation funded by Mr. Lemmon and the Rockefeller Foundation.

On September 7, 1939, the calI letters were changed to WRUL. Two days later the transmitters and antennas were moved f rom Boston to Scituate, Massachusetts. Control of the station was taken by the United States government on November 4, 1942. During World War II, WRUL was operated by …

This study attempts to determine the extent that Dakota territorial and North Dakota State governors have exercised the gubernatorial veto. The approach is historical. The development of the gubernatorial veto is outlined, the state constitutional provisions concerning it are presented, and individual performances by governors are indicated. A more detailed account of the veto exercised by the current Governor, William L. Guy, is given.

Dakota Territory was created with the governor having an absolute veto over acts of the legislature. Later Congress granted the legislature the power to override a veto. Ten territorial governors used the veto and a number …

The purpose of this research was to give an account of the 1940 senatorial election in North Dakota, which launched William Langer's career as a United States Senator. The study focused on the candidates and issues that were prevalent during the pre-primary conventions, the primary election campaign, the realignment of candidates after the primary, and the general election campaign.

Basic to the development of featherbedding are the fear of displacement and resistance to the use of the machine. Featherbedding grew out of an environment of violence in which destruction of machinery was frequent and represents a more civilized (sic) manner by which workers can protect their employment opportunities. Most guerilla-type fighting has been, is presently, and will most likely continue occurring in remote areas of the world. The terrain encountered may be tropical grasslands and canopy areas, or rugged mountains, inland waterways, swamps, mud flats and rice paddies. Other adverse terrain conditions are frequently encountered and must be crossed to accomplish the mission of the unit.
