Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry

"The Witness" can be viewed as Clinton F. Larson's poetic manifesto that points the direction for much of his subsequent work. Although his poetic "mormonism" has been questioned by several of his critics, this thesis shows that Larson definitely expresses his Mormon faith in "The Witness" as a metaphorical quest for mythic consciousness. While searching in the poem for sacred space and time, Larson seeks to become closer to the divine and powerful center of being, creating at once a metaphor for his quest to understand and assimilate Christ's atonement and a poetic voice from which he can speak for …

An Agriculture-Based Finance Model For Indian Community Colleges, James E. Shanley

This paper presents a finance model for Indian community colleges which proposes that these colleges begin and operate agricultural operations which will generate revenue for the colleges. The paper proposes that the college working with the respective tribe use tribal agricultural resources to produce income which can then be used to meet tribal objectives in higher education. The model was reviewed by a panel with expertise in reservation and tribal community college development.

A Preliminary Investigation Of Physical-Chemical Treatment Of Slagging Gasifier Aqueous Effluent, Kirk B. Hird

The feasibility of treating slagging gasifier wastewater by physical-chemical means was studied. Pretreatment and treatment flow schemes were developed by using batch and continuous tests. Results were based mainly on wastewater residual total organic carbon (TOC). A treatment facility was designed and economically evaluated.

It was found that slagging gasifier wastewater is treatable by physical-chemical means using activated carbon and chemical oxidation as the two principal treatment steps. A pretreatment scheme consisting of lime addition, ammonia stripping, and recarbonation-coagu- lation was found to sufficiently purify the raw gasifier liquor so that activated carbon adsorption and chemical oxidation could be applied …

This paper is a study of Union military philosophy during the American Civil War. Its specific purpose is to identify and establish clearly what is classified here as the Union command problem. Simply stated, the command problem was due to the fact that there were two schools of generalship, both inadequate; this meant that top leadership was usually mediocre since, for different reasons, Union commanders had an incomplete idea of war.

The procedure used to study this command problem is, first, to examine its origins in eighteenth century European military theory and then to study its appearance on the battlefield …

Throughout the history of the Mormon movement, certain members or groups of members, have exercised free agency in the form of dissent against the direction which the prophet of that church chose to lead his movement. The form of this dissent varied but the theme was usually quite consistant: a demand for moderation. For many of these dissenters the extremes of Mormon doctrine seemed to take them out of touch with prevailing American values.

William Jennings Bryan exercised great political power for thirty years in America. Through his efforts the Democratic Party power base was broadened to include Jews, Negroes businessmen, and farmers. Bryan's call for political and social reform found many supporters in the State of Utah.

The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine the factors contributing to the rise and subsequent decline of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Upper Canada. Although the time period of this study spans from 1830 until 1850, the principal years of activity were from 1832 until 1840. An effort is made to discuss any major location wherein the Church made substantial progress.

Kelsey, Texas, was a flourishing Latter-day Saint colony for more than a quarter of a century, beginning at a time when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was encouraging its converts to stay in the mission field. Kelsey was an attempt by the Church to provide Latter-day Saints from the southern states a safe haven from persecution which existed in the South, while leaving them in a geographic area in which they could be comfortable.
