Electrolyte Interactions With Ligand Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles, Sumudu Athukorale
Electrolyte Interactions With Ligand Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles, Sumudu Athukorale
Theses and Dissertations
Electrolyte interactions with ligand functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have broad implication to a wide range of applications in nanoparticle research field. Among a wide range of electrolytes, halides, nitrates, borohydrides, and sulfides are used to study the AuNP interfacial interactions. Although there are many studies on AuNP interactions with anionic species (halides, nitrates, borohydrides, and sulphides), there is limited information on AuNP interactions with metallic cations. Therefore, studying the nanoparticle interfacial interactions with both anionic and metallic cation species is highly important. The research reported here is focused on deepening the understanding of electrolyte interactions with ligand functionalized AuNPs in …
Enhancing Continuous Improvement Projects With The Blythe S-Curve And Multivariate Control Charts, William Kelly
Enhancing Continuous Improvement Projects With The Blythe S-Curve And Multivariate Control Charts, William Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
Successfully implementing continuous improvement and quality methodologies have been challenging over the past century. Challenges occur in managing change in the organization, which can be effectively addressed through relationship building in concert with strong leadership. Even with solid leadership, change management, and relationship building, initiatives have challenges quantifying and identifying when to intervene in order to keep them on track for success. Creating a quantitative model using a 3-parameter logit s-curve, Blythe S-curve, to illustrate the growth and decay of the handoff of projects to the process owner will allow leadership the knowledge and direction to keep the initiative moving …

Evaluation Of Coatings Used For Prolonging The Durability Of Cross-Laminated Timber Against Weathering And Wood Decay Fungi, Gabrielly S Bobadilha
Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this study was to assess the durability of commercially available coatings on cross- laminated timber (CLT) during natural and artificial weathering and against wood decay fungus. The CLT samples coated with twelve coatings were tested based on their moisture exclusion, water repellency, volumetric swelling and anti-swelling efficiency. Among all the tested coatings, only five (A, C, F, I and J) were able to promote water repellency and limiting dimensional changes. The top five coatings were then tested on CLT blocks exposed to natural (Starkville-MS and Madison-WI) and artificial weathering conditions and brown-rot fungi (G. trabeum). Variables such …

Biophysical Characterization Of Traditional And Nontraditional Equilibria In Metal-Biomolecular Interactions, Kayla Diane Mcconnell
Biophysical Characterization Of Traditional And Nontraditional Equilibria In Metal-Biomolecular Interactions, Kayla Diane Mcconnell
Theses and Dissertations
Numerous biological phenomena occur as a result of macromolecular interactions. Metal-ion-biomolecule binding account for a large portion of these reactions, and unsurprisingly, a vast amount of new research in this area is constantly emerging. Gaining insight into the characteristics that define these interactions; including equilibrium fluctuations, metal center formation, global stability perturbation, cooperativity, allostery, and site-specific binding are all significant. As with all chemical reactions, biological interactions are regulated by thermodynamics; and the development of novel tools and methods by which to study these interactions becomes highly relevant. In this dissertation, three systems involving macromolecular binding are studied using well …

Thermotolerance Classification Of Brassica Carinata Genotypes Using Germination Assay And Vegetative Growth Parameters, Leelawattie Persaud
Theses and Dissertations
Temperature is a major abiotic stress limiting plant growth. Thermotolerance evaluation during germination and early growth may help identify adaptable genotypes of new crops. Two studies were conducted to evaluate temperature effects on 12 Brassica carinata genotypes during germination and early growth. During germination, genotype AX17004 was both the most cold- and heat-tolerant. During early-season growth (35 d after seeding), there were temperature and genotype effects on shoot, root, and physiological components. Cumulative low- and high-temperature response indices, and cumulative root and shoot response indices were related, indicating the importance of these traits. Genotype AX17006 was identified as heat tolerant, …
To Plant Or Not To Plant? A Decision Support Tool To Minimize Risk Associated With Water Level Uncertainty In Reservoir Habitat Management., David M. Norris
To Plant Or Not To Plant? A Decision Support Tool To Minimize Risk Associated With Water Level Uncertainty In Reservoir Habitat Management., David M. Norris
Theses and Dissertations
Reservoir mudflats limit development of healthy fish assemblages due to the lack of structural habitat provided by plants. Seeding mudflats with agricultural plants may mimic floodplain wetlands once inundated and provide fish habitat. However, planting success is uncertain because of unpredictable water level fluctuations that affect plant growth. Decision support tools can quantify uncertainty that influences decision outcomes, thus reducing risk in the decision-making process. I used Bayesian Decision Networks and sensitivity analyses to quantify uncertainty surrounding mudflat plantings as supplemental fish habitat in four northwest Mississippi reservoirs. When averaged across all uncertainty, planting was the optimal decision only in …

The Big Sandy Problem: Projectile Morphometrics And Cultural Transmission At The End Of The Younger Dryas In The Mid-South, William Joseph
The Big Sandy Problem: Projectile Morphometrics And Cultural Transmission At The End Of The Younger Dryas In The Mid-South, William Joseph
Theses and Dissertations
Hafted bifaces known as ‘Big Sandys’ are side-notched lithic tools that are present in Early and Late Archaic contexts, limiting their utility as temporally diagnostic artifacts. I used Cultural Transmission theory to derive an initial expectation that there should be discernable variation due to the incongruous presence of Big Sandys throughout the Archaic and the millennia of time separating the production of these artifacts. I used Geometric Morphometrics to detect potential differences between the haft elements of Early and Late Archaic side-notched points. Statistical analysis of the morphometric data revealed there are differences in the morphology of the haft element …
Inheritance, Sam Kealhofer
Inheritance, Sam Kealhofer
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I observe the methods modern American poets employ to achieve literary activism in their work. Poets Amiee Nezhukumatathil, Marcus Wicker, and Tracy K. Smith all examine and critique different aspects of American life and culture. Ultimately, I argue that each poet, in their own way, develops a voice that deftly straddles between the personal and public. By doing so, the poets invigorate their work with an authenticity that is crucial in developing an ethos vivacious enough to create a call to action for readers. I will also discuss how I create a similar balance of the personal …

Analyses of human oral microbiomes reveal substantial amounts of information about health, diet, and diseases of individuals and their communities within the archaeological record. In order to examine bacterial genomes from the past, specific archaeological samples that contain remnants of the microbial communities in question must be utilized. Recent developments in high-throughput, next-generation DNA sequencing have enabled the characterization of entire oral microbiomes and genomes from the remains of the bacteria trapped in calcified dental plaque. This project analyzed samples of ancient human dental calculus from North and Central America, which were examined for the changes within the oral microbiome …
Fine-Scale Movements And Habitat Selection Of Eastern Wild Turkeys In Mississippi, John Almond
Fine-Scale Movements And Habitat Selection Of Eastern Wild Turkeys In Mississippi, John Almond
Theses and Dissertations
An important theme of wildlife ecology is understanding how animals move through their landscapes and inferring the strategies of resource acquisition. Eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallapavo silvestris) are a model species for evaluating the responses of movements and habitat selection to spatiotemporal variability of resources. I hypothesized that scales of area-restricted search (ARS) would change with variation in the landscape. I identified the ARS locations of high first passage time values using segmentation algorithms and hidden Markov models, and evaluated spatial variations in habitat selection for foraging-like activities of wild turkeys using Dirichlet multinomial models. The ARS scale for daily …

DNA origami templates have been studied due the versatility of shapes that can be designed and their compatibility with various materials. This has potential for future electronic applications. This work presents studies performed on the electrical properties of DNA origami templated gold nanowires. Using a DNA origami tile, gold nanowires are site specifically attached in a “C” shape, and with the use of electron beam induced deposition of metal, electrically characterized. These wires are electrically conductive with resistivities as low as 4.24 x 10-5 Ω-m. During moderate temperature processing nanowires formed on DNA origami templates are shown to be affected …
Cardiovascular Recovery From Emotional Stress: An Operationalization Of Equanamity Following Mindfulness-Based Emotional Stress, Emma Mcbride
Theses and Dissertations
Theoretical models of mindfulness suggest that meditation may improve health, in part, by regulating stress physiology, including faster recovery of heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (SBP/DBP) after emotional stress. Furthermore, improved cardiovascular recovery (CR) may be a marker of equanimity, defined as increased acceptance of and reduced reactivity to stress. No studies have tested this hypothesis, partly because methodology for assessing CR remains controversial. Using a novel operationalization of equanimity and several methods of measuring CR, this project investigated whether (1) equanimity is associated with improved CR, (2) Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is associated with improved CR, and (3) …

Theses and Dissertations
Mycobacterium abscessus is non-tuberculosis, rapid-growing mycobacterium (RGM), initially described in 1953. It is considered to be an important human pathogen that is found in hospital settings. This organism is responsible for soft tissue infections, disseminated infections in immunocompromised patients, after lung transplants, as well as common in bronchopulmonary infections in patients with cystic fibrosis. It accounts for up to 80% of lung diseases caused by RGM. Mycobacterium abscessus possesses resistance to a wide variety of antibiotics, thus, no standardized treatment for this pathogen has been established. While currently available antimicrobials are useful against most infections caused by this pathogen, lung …
Numerical Simulation Of The Nagumo Equation By Finite Difference Method, Gabriel Garcia
Numerical Simulation Of The Nagumo Equation By Finite Difference Method, Gabriel Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
The Nagumo equation is an important nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation used to model the transmission of nerve impulses. In this thesis, traveling wave solutions to the Nagumo equation are studied. A pseudo-Crank-Nicolson finite difference scheme is developed to find numerical solutions. The exact solution of Kawahara and Tanaka is used to demonstrate the efficiency of the scheme. It is confirmed that the numerical errors, evaluated in the discrete maximum norm, converge in $O(\Delta x^2 + \Delta t)$, where $\Delta x$ and $\Delta t$ are spatial and temporal step sizes, respectively. More simulations with different initial conditions are conducted. In particular, it …

What Motives Drive Pornography Consumption, Charlotte R. Esplin
What Motives Drive Pornography Consumption, Charlotte R. Esplin
Theses and Dissertations
Pornography use has become widespread and mainstream in American society, with estimates that 60% of men and 35% of women have viewed pornography at some time in the last year. Pornography use has been associated with both positive and negative outcomes depending on the user, and some of these conflicting results may stem from problematic measurement. Using a newly validated measure that assesses frequency, duration, arousal, and deliberate or accidental exposure to seven common types of pornography, we sought to understand if the motivations to view pornography differed depending on biological sex of the user and the type of use …
