Megafaunal Extinction In The Neotropics: A Landscape Approach, Angela Rozas Davila
Megafaunal Extinction In The Neotropics: A Landscape Approach, Angela Rozas Davila
Theses and Dissertations
A 20 million years reign of large terrestrial mammals, known as megafauna (animals over 45 kg), came to an end during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. Particularly apparent in the Americas, the sudden extinction of Pleistocene megafauna has no equivalent in the fossil record as it only targeted large terrestrial animals. Early hypotheses explaining this extinction focused on climatic forcing and anthropogenic interactions, which included extensive hunting and/or landscape transformation. More recently, a third plausible explanation of megafaunal extinction has been the combined effects of climate-change and human influences; commonly referred to as the ‘synergistic effect of climate-humans’ hypothesis. The study of …
A Computational Investigation Of The Biomechanics For Platelets Aggregation, Ghadah Mohammed Alhawael
A Computational Investigation Of The Biomechanics For Platelets Aggregation, Ghadah Mohammed Alhawael
Theses and Dissertations
The proximal cause of most heart attacks and many strokes is the rapid formation of a blood clot (thrombus) in response to the rupture or erosion of an arterial atherosclerotic plaque. The formation of a thrombus in arteries is a very complex process whose workings are subjects of intense research. In this dissertation, we investigate the biomechanics of platelet aggregation in large arteries using a two-phase continuum computational model. The model tracks the number densities of various platelet populations, the concentration of one platelet-activating chemical, as well as the number densities of inter-platelet bonds. Through the formation of elastic bonds, …

Anticoagulant Profile Of Subcutaneous Enoxaparin In Healthy Dogs, Julianna Frum
Anticoagulant Profile Of Subcutaneous Enoxaparin In Healthy Dogs, Julianna Frum
Theses and Dissertations
Enoxaparin, a low-molecular-weight heparin, is commonly used as an anticoagulant in dogs, and is currently dosed at 0.8mg/kg every 6 hours. With an increase in individual enoxaparin doses, less frequent dosing may be possible, thereby reducing owner inconvenience and expense. The three phases of this study investigated the appropriate dose (Phase one- 0.8mg/kg, SQ once; Phase two- 2mg/kg, SQ once; Phase three- 1.3 mg/kg, SQ q8h for 7 total doses) and dosing interval needed for maximum effectiveness of enoxaparin. A Sonoclot® analyzer and factor Xa activity were used to assess level of anticoagulation in six healthy dogs. Anticoagulation was inconsistent …

Act Reading Performance And Science Performance: The Influence Of Science Teachers’ Self- Efficacy And Emphasis Of Terminology Strategies During Instruction, Sophia Bailey-Suggs
Theses and Dissertations
Reading ability impacts “high stakes” standardized tests that science students need to graduate, to enter college or to enter the work force. As a result, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) require science teachers to implement vocabulary techniques amongst other reading strategies for improved content comprehension and test performance. Simple linear regression was applied to determine the effect of average ACT reading scores on average ACT science scores. Path analysis was utilized to explain the impact of science teacher self-efficacy (X1SEFF) and teaching of important terms/facts (N1TERMS) on average ACT reading scores (AVGACTREAD) and average ACT science scores (AVGACTSCI). Those …
Investigating The Localization Of Foxo Transcription Factors In Glioblastoma, Leetoria Hinojosa
Investigating The Localization Of Foxo Transcription Factors In Glioblastoma, Leetoria Hinojosa
Theses and Dissertations
The Phosphatidylinositol 3 Kinase (PI3K) pathway is an essential intracellular signaling pathway that regulates cellular growth, survival, and fate. Canonically, the activation of this pathway removes forkhead box subfamily O transcription factors (FOXO -1, -3, and -4) from the nucleus. However, in cancer cells such as glioblastoma multiforme, FOXO factors are at least in part nuclear despite the activation of the PI3K pathway. Previous research indicated that FOXO3 localization was not affected when the pathway was inhibited in breast cancer cells, which challenged the conventional paradigms for FOXO factor regulation. Therefore, we were interested in investigating the nuclear localization of …

Effects Of Incubation Temperature On Nanomechanical Properties Of Β-Lactoglobulin Amyloid Fibers, Santosh Khatri
Theses and Dissertations
Amyloid fibrils constitute a class of highly ordered nanomaterials formed by aggregates of the protein. Although The irreversible fibril formation of various proteins is related to the disorders like Alzheimer’s diseases, Creutzfeldt-Jacob and many more, amyloid fibrils have also been noticed in many physiologically beneficial roles such as in adhesive and hormone storage. Here, we compare the stiffness and structural properties of the amyloid fibers examined by the statistical approaches of single molecule atomic force microscopy images of heat-denatured β-lactoglobulin fibrils at different incubation time period (24, 48, and 72 hours). We demonstrate the gradual decrease in stiffness of the …

The Past, Present, And Future Of Ecological Climate Warming Experiments, Cori Johanna Speights
The Past, Present, And Future Of Ecological Climate Warming Experiments, Cori Johanna Speights
Theses and Dissertations
Predicting the net effect of climate change on communities requires understanding how increasing temperatures alter interactions between predators, herbivores, and plants. Over the last several decades, warming experiments have provided important information about how species and their interactions will respond to increasing temperatures. These studies typically examine climate warming by experimentally increasing temperature at a constant level (24 hours) or asynchronously during the daytime, relative to unwarmed control treatments. However, advances in climate models now project that increases in mean global temperatures have been disproportionately driven by increasing nighttime (minimum) temperatures rather than daytime (maximum) temperatures. The timing of warming …
Quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Techniques To Investigate Bacterial Metabolites And Protein Competition Kinetics On Various Nanoparticle Surfaces, Rebecca Hill
Theses and Dissertations
Solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a valuable analytical technique that is nondestructive, highly reproducible, and relatively quick to identify and quantify many chemical compounds. Quantitative NMR is a technique commonly used in many medical applications such as drug analysis, metabolomics, and protein-nanoparticle (P-NP) interactions. The most common technique used is the proton (1H) NMR experiment. The 1H NMR analysis provides a quick snapshot of the interested compounds in solution. However, as the compounds become more complex the spectrum becomes overpopulated. This dissertation focuses on various quantitative NMR techniques applied to metabolic and protein competition studies. Specifically, we investigated …

Short-Term Movements And Seasonal Habitat Suitability Of Shovelnose Sturgeon In The Lower Mississippi River, Dylan Hann
Theses and Dissertations
Shovelnose Sturgeon patterns of movement are unknown for the lower Mississippi River. Active acoustic telemetry was used to determine how Shovelnose Sturgeon moved throughout a section of river and what influenced those movements. Distance to habitat type, depth, surface current velocity, river stage, change in river stage, river bottom slope, and temperature were investigated. Shovelnose Sturgeon were found not to have random or goal-oriented movements using a straightness index. Movement rate was influenced by river stage and surface current velocity. Habitat suitability changed with river stage and distance to habitat type supported a suite of delineated river features that Shovelnose …
On Existence And Global Attractivity Of Periodic Solutions Of Higher Order Nonlinear Difference Equations, Justin B. Smith
On Existence And Global Attractivity Of Periodic Solutions Of Higher Order Nonlinear Difference Equations, Justin B. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Difference equations arise in many fields of mathematics, both as discrete analogs of continuous behavior (analysis, numerical approximations) and as independent models for discrete behavior (population dynamics, economics, biology, ecology, etc.). In recent years, many models - especially in mathematical biology - are based on higher order nonlinear difference equations. As a result, there has been much focus on the existence of periodic solutions of certain classes of these equations and the asymptotic behavior of these periodic solutions. In this dissertation, we study the existence and global attractivity of both periodic and quasiperiodic solutions of two different higher order nonlinear …
Optimization Of Marsh Terracing As A Wetland Restoration Technique: Mitigation Of Cohesive Sediment Erosion By Waves Associated With Frontal Passage, Joseph French
Theses and Dissertations
Rates of marsh wetland loss in the northern Gulf of Mexico are the highest observed in North America. Marsh terraces have been implemented over the last 30 years to address this loss. Marsh Terraces reduce fetch and resulting wave energy which, reduces rates erosion of sediments in coastal wetlands. This thesis evaluated marsh terraces by extensive data collection that will assess the spatiotemporal relationships between wind patterns, wave parameters, and sediment strength in water bodies modified with marsh terraces. Data collected during two four-month deployments captured the passage of 40 cold front storms and the passage of Hurricane Barry. Results …
Pain Tolerance As A Mediator Of Aggressive Behavior, Nathan Barclay
Pain Tolerance As A Mediator Of Aggressive Behavior, Nathan Barclay
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that the experiences of pain and aggression are linked. Past research supports the notion that individuals with an aggressive history tend to have higher pain thresholds than their less aggressive counterparts. The aim of this study was to test the notion that past aggressive behavior is positively associated with higher pain tolerances, and that higher pain tolerance would be associated with the use of a clearly aggressive response on a laboratory task. Using data from a larger study on the neuroscience of human aggression (N = 80), a serial mediation model was tested using both objective and …

Theses and Dissertations
The use of computed tomography in patients with gastrointestinal disease is increasing. However, the triple-phase computed tomographic angiographic appearance of the canine small intestine and the effects that phase of contrast enhancement and plane of reconstruction have on the appearance of the small intestine have not been fully evaluated. The purposes of this study were to investigate these effects on the appearance of the small intestinal wall. The minimal and maximal small intestinal diameter, wall thickness, number of wall layers identified, and degree of mucosal enhancement were recorded. The plane of reconstruction did not have any significant effects on wall …
Physiological Consequences Of Adverse Early-Life Experiences: A Skeletal Investigation Of Frailty And Resilience Within An Institutionalized Sample Using A Modified Version Of The Skeletal Frailty Index (Sfi), Ashley Dafoe
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates frailty, defined as the accumulation of deficits in physiological functioning, by applying the Skeletal Frailty Index (SFI) to a skeletal sample (N=67) recovered from the Mississippi State Asylum (MSA), and in a comparative sample, the Terry Collection. The SFI was statistically modified to increase its utility here. Variables that influence frailty, including age, sex, stress in early-life, and resilience, were assessed relative to four SFIs: Overall, Nutritional, Activity, and Infection. This study finds that the predicted relationships between the SFIs and the aforementioned variables are largely absent in the MSA sample. When compared to individuals in the …
Pneumococcal Resistance To Granule-Mediated Killing By Human Neutrophils, James Howard Jackson
Pneumococcal Resistance To Granule-Mediated Killing By Human Neutrophils, James Howard Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a significant human pathogen and the leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia and acute otitis media. One of the primary defense mechanisms of the human immune system against pneumococcal infection involves granule-mediated killing of bacterial cells by neutrophils. While this mechanism has previously been shown to kill about half of pneumococci in vitro, we hypothesized that some pneumococcal strains have evolved to be more resistant to this granule-mediated killing. Clinical isolates demonstrated a varying range of sensitivity to neutrophil granules. Additionally, we established that the absence of the capsule may affect sensitivity as unencapsulated isolates showed a higher …
Preliminary Investigations Into Pharmacodynamic Monitoring Of Cyclosporine In Cats, Harry Cridge
Preliminary Investigations Into Pharmacodynamic Monitoring Of Cyclosporine In Cats, Harry Cridge
Theses and Dissertations
Existing pharmacokinetic monitoring tools for cyclosporine fail to correlate with clinical response. In dogs, pharmacodynamic monitoring of nuclear factor of activated T cell (NFAT) regulated cytokines is thought to provide a better overall evaluation of the immune response to cyclosporine than blood levels; however, such monitoring tools are not available in cats. In this study, we designed and optimized a protocol for maximal T lymphocyte stimulation in cats. This is the first step in the development of a pharmacodynamic monitoring tool for cyclosporine in cats based on expression of NFAT-regulated cytokines. We also confirmed that cyclosporine has anti-lymphocytic properties in …
C–N Bond Formation Using Copper Complexes, James Cope
C–N Bond Formation Using Copper Complexes, James Cope
Theses and Dissertations
Development of C–N bond formation chemistry is a continuing field of study. Recently copper based Chan-Evans-Lam cross-coupling was discovered, and although our understanding of the mechanism has grown, there are still many unanswered questions to be explored. Herein, we set out to develop a series of copper complexes that can stabilize different oxidation states in an attempt to probe how this impacts the mechanism. Initially complexes of copper(II) with 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) and related ligands were generated for use with CEL coupling. The complexes were probed electrochemically and photophysically and found that the 4,5-diazafluorenone complex 4 had a Cu2+/Cu+ potential …

Effect Of Housing Environment And Laying Hen Strain On Performance, Egg Quality And Bone Properties As Well As Cloacal And Eggshell Microbiology, Milan Kumar Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Laying hen welfare is gaining importance in the United States and several states have passed legislation for a welfareriendly housing environment, which has forced the egg industry to explore alternative housing environments. For this reason, our first objective was to determine the effect of housing environment and laying hen strain on production performance and egg quality. Results showed that production performance of the hens raised in the alternative housing system was similar to the conventional system. The second objective was to compare the eggshell and cloacal microbiology. Our results indicated that the microbial load observed was higher in the alternative …
Effects Of Estradiol Benzoate On Reproductive Characteristics In Beef Cattle, Lacey Dysart
Effects Of Estradiol Benzoate On Reproductive Characteristics In Beef Cattle, Lacey Dysart
Theses and Dissertations
Assisted reproductive technologies such as estrus synchronization and embryo transfer can aid producers in meeting their goals of improving genetics, calve one calf per cow per year, and wean heavy calves. Most estrus synchronization protocols follow a GnRH-PGF-GnRH sequence. Ovulation prompted by exogenous gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) may cause the release of sub-mature oocytes and lead to decreased pregnancy rates. Inclusion of estradiol benzoate (EB) improved pregnancy rates in some studies. The objective of this study was to determine if EB affects blood perfusion of follicles, corpus luteum (CL), or uterus, concentrations of estradiol and progesterone, or incidence of standing …
Effects Of The Trematode Bolbophorus Damnificus On Channel And Hybrid Catfish, Mackenzie Gunn
Effects Of The Trematode Bolbophorus Damnificus On Channel And Hybrid Catfish, Mackenzie Gunn
Theses and Dissertations
The trematode Bolbophorus damnificus (Digenea: Bolbophoridae) has deleterious effects on production efficiency of farm-raised catfish. The effects of B. damnificus on channel and hybrid catfish, as well as the prevalence and longevity of the trematode stages impacting production, are not well understood. This study aimed to understand the prevalence of infected snails, determine the longevity and site specificity of B. damnificus cercaria in catfish, and compare mortality and physiological response between channel and hybrid catfish during infection. The infectivity and survival of B. damnificus cercariae declined significantly at 12h intervals from 12-36h, and subsequent trials were standardized using cercariae <12h old. Metacercariae persisted in both fish types for 13 months and were found commonly in the posterior midsection. Hybrid catfish exhibited lower mortality than channel catfish. Exposed catfish exhibited anemia corresponding to parasite encapsulation, however no difference was found between fish types in physiological response during infection and subsequent recovery.
Electrochemical Studies Of External Forcing Of Periodic Oscillating Systems And Fabrication Of Coupled Microelectrode Array Sensors, David Clark
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation describes the electrochemical behavior of nickel and iron that was studied in different acid solutions via linear sweep voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, and potentiostatic measurements over a range of temperatures at specific potential ranges. The presented work displays novel experiments where a nickel electrode was heated locally with an inductive heating system, and a platinum (Pt) electrode was used to change the proton concentration at iron and nickel electrode surfaces to control the periodic oscillations (frequency and amplitude) produced and to gain a greater understanding of the systems (kinetics), oscillatory processes, and corrosion processes. Temperature pulse voltammetry, linear sweep …
